Akiiryu
A moment of silence for the boys - NZL, AUS, TUR, BRI and FRA who fought and died at Gallipoli. I'm sorry to say this Kant but Howard deserves a bullet after his acts today. Link to comment
Niederoestereich
And why does he deserve the bullet. I can't see why  Gallipoli seems to overshadow other actions taken by the Aussies and New Zealanders in the Great War. Remember, it was the western front where most casualties were gained, heroics tested and the nations spirit and identity formed. Pozieres, Bullecourt, Ypres, Hamel, Amiens and Villiers-Bretonneaux.   For the Fallen:  With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free.  Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres. There is music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears.  They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe.  They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.  They mingle not with their laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables at home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond England's foam.  But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight, To the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the Night;  As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain, As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end, they remain. I think it was mainly British troops involved, however, the ANZAC's suffered significantly. As too did other empire troops. Link to comment
Amnalos
Howard deserves a solid clout athwart the earhole for a whole host of reasons, most of which have nothing to do with Gallipoli. Â As far as the ANZAC situation goes, the NZ snub is not much of an issue. What annoys me is what he wants to do to Gallipoli, turning it into a theme park as though Australia owns it. We already had the disgraceful rendition of Stayin' Alive which just trivialized the whole service and, believe me, there is nothing Howard would like more than to see ANZAC Day turn into a big rock concert. Anything that distracts people from the horror of the war makes it that much easier for Mr. Howard to bumble from one international conflict to another in the wake of his boss, George W. Bush. Europa
Forgive me my ignorance, but what does ANZAC stand for? I believe it's got something to do with remembring the fallen soldiers in WWI.. but that's it Link to comment
Europa
Never mind, found it Australia and New Zealand commemorate the ANZAC Day public holiday on the 25th of April every year to honour the bravery and sacrifice of the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), and of all those who served their country. ANZAC Day is also a public holiday in Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa and Tonga. Â Link to comment
Niederoestereich
Forgive lateness, i was away at the religious camp for 3 days  What annoys me is what he wants to do to Gallipoli, turning it into a theme park as though Australia owns it  Just remember its just as significant for turkey as it is for us, after all 86,000 died defending their homeland from invasion and their leader established modern Turkey. I would rather facilities their instead of people bumbing around the old battlefield destroying it.  Anything that distracts people from the horror of the war makes it that much easier for Mr. Howard to bumble from one international conflict to another in the wake of his boss, George W. Bush  Dude its ANZAC Day, or was. Leave this crap out of it. We do have to support our allies, otherwise why would they support us when we get invaded. Australia, alot of empty land space with tons of minerals and uranium. Even if ya don't agree with the government, although they are far better then a labour Beazly choice, support the troops away.  He deserves it for not going to the NZL service. Respect your mates in arms..  Yeah i guess thats not to good. Sorry mate Link to comment

Littering is okay, paving over the bones of the soldiers is okay, but somehow the battlefield will be 'destroyed' if people show up there without adequate facilities? Weak.  I'm not going to get into an argument on politics. I hate the Libs, it's true, but then again I dislike almost all politicians regardless of where they sit on the political spectrum. Parasites, the lot of them. Anyhow, the point of ANZAC day is to tell it like it is. We honour our soldiers and applaud their bravery- and the reason for this is not because war is a noble or dignified affair. It isn't. It's a dirty, miserable business where usually both sides are in the wrong. The soldiers are for the most part honest folk who don't want to be there and are trying to make the most of a very bad situation and celebrating their acts of valour is not the same as glorifying war itself. People would do well to remember that. Polluting ANZAC day to make a quick buck or for some political purpose offends me. Downplaying war because you want to have another one offends me even more.
