Mikochi City Expansion

Recommended Posts

<s> Economic expansion guinea pig #1 </s>

The statistics

I would like to request a city expansion for my Capital, Umikyo.

Currently, Mikochi's population is 22,312,394, spread across Mikochi's 4 island groups: Seinan, Hangoku, Aozorashima and Takarajima. The GDPPC of the nation is around $24,649.

Situated on the south-eastern coast of Mikochi's most 'central' island, is the capital and largest city, Umikyo. The population of Umikyo is around 4.8 million, almost a quarter of the nation. Since jobs in the capital are typically contribute more to GDP, I imagine the GDPPC of Umikyo to be around $34,000. Based on my research of East-Asian capitals, such as Taipei, the GDPPC of the capital city is usually around 33%-45% higher than the national average.

At the end of the expansion, I would like the population of Umikyo to rise to ~7.7 million, and the GDPPC of the city to grow to ~$44,000, over a twelve year period between 2012 and 2024. These figures are sort of comparible to Taipei.

Taking this into account on a national level, this growth would result in a new national population of 25,287,241 and a new GDPPC of $28,779. This takes Mikochi's overall GDP to $727,741,508,739

The plan - Infrastructure and new developments

I will be expanding upon 10 key projects that occured during the 12 year period.

P.S. Please ignore the accidental placing of

  1. Mishima-Umikyo International Airport Expansion - In addition to the addition of a second runway, the airport will recieve connection through to Umikyo Central Station via a new metro line. Additionally, new services will be build, and the current terminal will be expanded.
  2. Shiokaze Shipyard refurbishment - More on this HERE.
  3. Ishiku Station refurbishment + Downtown funding - Ishiku Station will be modernised and expanded. Additionally, Ishiku will recieve funding for a major works around the ward, including a 3D billboard, in hopes to bring more tourists to the area.
  4. Teshiko port redevelopment - The former industrial area will be converted into a brand new residential area, featuring multiple highrise apartment buildings, with ground level commercial uses. The area will both aim to meet Mikochi's growing population, and also aim to attract more foreign workers to the city.
  5. Ginsei Expo Park & Umikyo Pavilion - This will require some approval from mods/admins I suppose. I don't think it's currently a thing, but IRL, but I want to have a wurld expo hosted in Umikyo sometime within the time period, preferably around 2020. The leadup to the expo will be one of the reasons why the city gets so much expansion on infrastructure and tourism too. The expo will be somewhat based on this. In theory, this could be a cool think where other people can make comments on their country's participation in the expo, but also I think it would be cool to have somewhat frequent "wurld fairs" in Eurth! If this doesn't pan out though, I can think of something else. The site will mostly be in Ginsei, however there will be a smaller area in the centre of the city.
  6. Creation of the Navy Line and expansion of the Red line - The Navy Line will run from Mishima-Umikyo Airport and terminating in Seiburi, the most northern part of the city. The line will double as a line to connect Seibury and Shinshiro to the metropolitan area more efficiently, as well as providing another way for people to reach the airport. The Red line currently goes from Shiokaze and teminates in Kokonoe. The expansion, mainly above ground, will expand the metro network into Ginko and Chuo, terminating in Kaiyomachi.
  7. Eurth Studios Mikochi - A brand new themepark on the island of Mishima, with attractions based on popular Eurth media, and Mikochinese media. Additionally, a small movie studio site will be created in the same campus, allowing for greater ease of access for Eurth Studios to create/publish movies in Mikochi and surrounding area.
  8. Umikyo-Megumi hospital - Umikyo's oldest hospital will be torn down, and a larger, more modern and capable hospital will be build in it's place. Additionally, the University of Umikyo will have an onsite building for medicinal research and training.
  9. Umikyo Skyline redevelopment - Two new skyscrapers will be constructed in the heart of the city's core, the unnamed building 1 and the unnamed building 2 (They will have names when I come to the RP of it) For the second building, I was hoping of calling it something corny like the Umikyo wurld Trade Centre or Mikochi wurld Trade Centre
  10. Fujimoto Shinshiro Plant - A new, modern industrial facility created by the Fujimoto group. The site will be the largest of Fujimoto's car plants, and will be home to the production of the Fujimoto Kaiju, as well as several of Fujimoto's civilian vehicles.

The plan - politics & policies

There's a few political reasons why the city grows during this time period.

  1. The 2012 election - In Mikochi, elections happen every 6 years. Since the end of the civil war won by the socialists in 1980 and the constitution in 1984, the only party to win a majority has been the Socialist Democracy Party. Several administrative blunders made by the unpopular government of [nameofbadleader] in 2008
  2. 2012 defence bill - The 2012 defence bill would grant extra funds to the military, a lot of which is stationed in or near Umikyo. A lot of this money would go to expanding/creating new facilities.
  3. 2018 election - This is the year the SDP finally lost an election, however it was more due to low voter turnout than low support. The Centralists got in, aka market liberals. They basically sought to steer Mikochi away from Socialism and into a somewhat centralist position. They wanted more foreign companies, foreign workers, basically their priority was growing the economy. They saw Umikyo as the jewel of Mikochi, and believed that investing in the city would allow for a trickledown into other regions of Mikochi.
  4. Umikyo Special Economic Area - Set up in 2018 by the centrists, it created a new administrative entity covering the Umikyo metropolitan area, including the prefectures of Umikyo, Shiokaze, Kaiyomachi and Hanasui. The USEA had some different laws to the rest of the country, making it easier for foreign labour and students to come to the city, made it easier for investment/companies, etc.
  5. [Edit] Fujimoto Group - The Fujimoto group is an automaker in Mikochi, and likely one of the largest companies in the country. They primarily make and export cars, but have also gotten involved in some military projects, such as the Kaiju and Hachiman. They are actively seeking to grow their business, and see Umikyo as their 'base'.

Edit/Conclusion:

I accidentally pressed ctrl+enter but it's basically ready to post, I guess.

Happy to change some things around! But if it gets approved, I'm looking forward to expanding upon all this stuff. I'll do this through a mix of forum posts and then also expanding on things in the iiwiki as well.

This looks great and really well done. Regarding the 2020 Wurld Expo I believe something was discussed in 2018 about a wurld Expo but AFAIk nothing came of it. @Orioni might know more, though.
My only question is how you plan to house the +2.9 million people. There's lots of stuff relating to the economy but not much on residential plans besides maybe the Umikyo Special Economic Area. Perhaps you could do something regarding the focus you put on students w/ post-graduate schemes to allow students to purchase an apartment/flat at cheaper prices? I'd recommend maybe 2-3 different residential projects (depending on their scale) or amending existing projects to include the new population boom.

@Xio

The Teshiko Port redevelopment will create lots of new homes. Additionally, the new metro lines will lead to a lot of rezoning around the new stations, specifically more so in Ishiku, which will see a lot of high-rise apartment blocks.

With the Fujimoto Plant opening, they'd also invest in providing a lot of affordable housing specifically for the employees, and the 2012 Defence Plan includes a lot of new on-base housing for soldiers.

The rest of the housing will come from 'general expansion' on the outskirts. Currently the USEA is 4 kinda disconnected cities (Shiokaze, Umikyo, Kaiyomichi and Gyoen) and they're all starting to grow into each other.

Sadly, no, this doesn’t ring a bell. On my

phone right now so I can’t perform in-depth research.

@Mikochi have you searched the forums and iiwiki?

This forum is all that I can find that references anything like it, but doesn't seem anything came out of it.

If we were to do a wurld expo, I think every 4 years would be good. In this case, I'd like to go for 2021, and then maybe we can have someone do one in 2025 next year. We can then retroactively fill in hosts of the wurld expo going back every 4 years, and those people can decide if they want to retroactively write about it also.

Here is my plan for the Mikochi wurld Expo 2021:

  • I'll write on the sites for the Expo, this will primarily be at a large site in Ginsei, and a smaller area in central Umikyo.
  • I'll write on the planning, theme, logistics, setup, construction, and opening ceremony (The theme would be 'Saving the Environment'). By this stage, I'd hope to know OOC wise roughly how many people would participate.
  • I'll write about what Mikochi will be 'showing off' at the expo, as well as some domestic companies, such as Fujimoto with perhaps a concept hydrogen car.
  • I'd then leave the thread open for other countries to write about what they will be showing off at their pavilions. This could be stuff like art displays about climate change, eco-tech, green energy, perhaps a concept models of ecological buildings.
  • Perhaps then after a month, to allow for enough replies, I'll finish it off by writing about the event's conclusion, and ending ceremony.

It would be really nice to make this happen, it would only require 1–3 paragraphs of commitment from each participant, maybe more if people wanted to. But I think it would be nice to have a thread with so many people getting involved!

It seems like a good idea.

It may be a good idea to make this a separate topic for this, so we don't totally derail this :P

Closer to when I'm ready, I'll make a seperate thread for discussion of the event in OOC, before I make the IC post. But that probably wont be for a couple months, I'd like to sort out some of the other projects first.
