Pentium Posted July 15 Posted July 15 Blemish Air Institute, Lecture Hall - 3:57 PM “And before you all go, make sure you complete your boundary-layer studies project by next week. I will not tell you again, and there will be no more extensions.” Students began to shuffle out, class had ended a few minutes early, Luca O'Brien was feeling the age in his bones as his age continued to grow on him. His 80th birthday had been a month ago, and was still teaching in the school he had founded so long ago. Popping open his window, he lit a cigarette and leaned out. The cool air washed over his face and brought a sense of calm to Luca, so much had changed in Blemish throughout his lifetime. There was a knock on the door as well, perhaps one of his students. When Luca turned around to face the lingering person, he was met with two figures far too old to be his students. Minister of Defense Lachlan Sinclair and Chief Airman Ewan Dunbar had both entered unannounced. The old man sighed, nothing about this could be good. “Good afternoon, Professor, sorry to drop in unannounced like this. But myself and Mr. Dunbar would like to ask you a few questions if you have the time.” Luca nodded and pulled over his chair, sitting himself down. The other two pulled over chairs from the lecture hall, after setting their briefcases down. Luca kept smoking his cigarette, a small infraction on his end. “What kind of questions do you have for me? I had wagered I was too old to be of use to you government types.” Luca looked at the two and waited. Ewan spoke first. “We needed some expertise from you, and we were hoping that you could grant us some insight into a few projects.” Sinclair chimed in as well. “I will entrust you with some information for context, we are looking for a new type of asset for the Air Force. I'm sure you saw the budgetary increases Defence got as well. Most of it is going to update the Air Force.” Luca's expression didn't change at all from the news. “So, why do you tell me this? Get to the meat please, I may be done with this lecture, but I do not want to look around this bush.” Sinclair and Ewan looked at each other, and then back at Luca. Ewan popped open his briefcase as Sinclair kept speaking. “We want your insight on a debate we are stuck in. Something to replace the PAC-61 in its role as our fighter, to continue to modernize the airframe Ewan and I can't come to a decision on what choice is best. I wish for something new to push us into the next age of aircraft.” Ewan took out a few documents and handed them off to Luca, there were technical documents and plans for the PAC-61. Further documents contained sketches, information and technology to be installed. Equations, information about additional weight, bomb loads, thrust to weight etc. “I've prepared some rough information for you to look over to help you make your choice, I used to study here as a youth and thought of you when we came to this impasse.” Luca rubbed his eyes and shuffled the pages again. “There's a lot here gentlemen, you ask so much from an old man. What do I get from it?” Luca's question caused the officials to pause for a time, it wasn't something they had been expecting from him. But, they would need to do something for Luca's compensation. He was old though, wealthy enough for his own time left and wouldn't be persuaded by nationalism or patriotism. “How about we name it after you? Whether we make an upgrade or a new aircraft, we will have it bear your name and legacy.” Ewan looked at Sinclair with some surprise, it was an unexpected offer. But he nodded his head, as his mind began turning the gears that his older counterpart had already put together. He began his consideration, leaning into his chair and taking a large drag off his cigarette. It wasn't what he expected either in truth, it was one of the few things that he was interested in during his old age. His legacy is something beyond his name and reputation that may carry itself a few decades on its merit. Or a footnote in a historical record somewhere that would be dug up every so often. If the fighter he could help to decide on, to help with its development and influence. Perhaps his name, what he represented and used to be could live on throughout centuries instead of decades. Seeing his old work burn away once hurt him badly, but it was also the best years of his life. He believed he still had one last push within him. “I would have another request for my help. In addition to the name, I wish to be part of the development of your new aircraft. I have spent so many years in this institute, that I gave many years to fighting you and creating our designs. I believe that I have experience in areas that you may not, and I wish to offer my assistance in your endeavour.” Luca smiled as he finished his thoughts, having made his 2nd demand of the two representatives of the Pentian government. Sinclair nodded, as they both packed up their briefcases and prepared to leave. “I agree to your terms, I'm sure Ewan will be happy to work with his old mentor. I'll get you picked up in the next few days for our next steps. It was a pleasure to meet you, Mr. O'Brien.” Sinclair and Ewan exited the lecture hall, after putting their chairs back and packing themselves up. Luca tossed his cigarette away. He would need to prepare a letter of absence from the school. “Well, that went well. Didn't you think, Ewan?” Sinclair looked over to the Air Chief as they left the building. They got a few looks from students watching the two high-ranking officials walking casually through the wall of their school. “I can't say I'm surprised he wanted to go with the new design, he was always a proponent of innovation and futurism. I'm just surprised he wanted to join the project.” Sinclair shrugged and nodded his head mildly. “I didn't expect that either, good call on visiting him. This should be interesting.” 5
Pentium Posted July 17 Author Posted July 17 (edited) Blemish Air Institute, Conference Hall – 4:00 PM Luca O'Brien stepped into the hall, the room was filled with a variety of people. Young and old gathered. some of the highest-ranking individuals within the Republic's military, civil sectors and governmental bodies. A few heads turned to the old professor, but none said much about it. Regardless of his age and status, he was still a well-respected member of an establishment they were currently seated in. And his presence shouldn't have been surprising, especially since this meeting was in the institute. Ewan and Sinclair were both waiting inside the room, speaking to their subordinates or counterparts from other departments or branches. The army had sent its representative, Lt Gen Eamon Moretti, to represent the interests of its troops and experience. The navy had sent their top man, Hamish McAllister to the meeting as well. The prospect of naval aviation had been a far dream of his since the day he had been promoted to the position, despite the lack of capabilities the navy currently possessed. Several other military officers were in the room, as well as several civilian sector individuals. Pentium Aerospace Corporation (PAC) and Blemish Civil Air Manufacturing (BCAM) were the main two, but several smaller companies had been in attendance. All told, there were roughly 20 people in the room. Upon noticing him, Sinclair brought the room to order, and each party found its seat. Clearing his throat, the Minister of Defense began with his opening speech. “Ladies and gentlemen, first of all thank you for attending this meeting. It will likely be the first of many that we have on the topic we have today. To keep it quick, because I know most of us are tired of sitting in rooms and online speaking to each other about mundane topics. After extensive discussions with my colleague in the Air Force and with Mr O'Brien late in the afternoon.” A few heads turned over to Luca, the strangeness of his circumstance and his apparent agreement with the plan to assist the Republic in its endeavours, “We have concluded that creating a new aircraft is a superior option to continuing to modernize the PAC-61. I know that some of our friends will be disappointed with this conclusion, however, there is only so much that we can stuff into a nearly fifty-year-old frame.” Representatives from the aircraft manufacturing companies took notes and shuffled their papers around, their interests having peaked from the announcement. Ewan nodded and began to speak as Sinclair checked his notes. “I will note, the currently active PAC-61 fighters will still be in service and gradually retired. Their overall numbers will be either sold off, scrapped for parts, or given to secondary roles that may be unnecessary for a new aircraft. We expect that the new craft will be a bit smaller in its scope, but will still fill a multirole fighter aircraft. Now, before we get into the nitty-gritty of designs that we currently have, does anyone have any questions?” Lieutenant General Eamon spoke up and looked over to Luca, “Why is he here? Is he not a direct and living link to our last and worst conflict? Have we put ourselves in such a position that we must rely on our old enemies to design our new aircraft?” Luca looked back at Eamon, anger built up inside him from his words. “Do you believe that, Lieutenant General? That I have infiltrated your secret dealings as a Southern Union spy, sixty years after we had capitulated? Listen to your own words and decide if you truly believe that.” Before Eamon was able to respond, Sinclair cleared his throat loudly and began speaking again. “Questions of substance and quality, Eamon. We have a long and difficult job ahead of us. We do not need to be at each other's throats within the first hour. Now, moving along to the next point. I understand our friends in aircraft design and creation have several ideas and existing design work that we may find interesting. Of course, we are not going to all be having a look at them now. I would strongly suggest that you all begin to send these over to our office. In the meantime, however, there will be a call put out to other nations to propose purchasing aircraft instead of creating a local design. As we often have in the Republic of Pentium, we will be comparing your designs to currently operating aircraft. I will not guarantee that we will choose a local design over a foreign design, so make a convincing argument that we should invest time and money into your ideas.” Sinclair took a breath, the long and practiced speech was over already. Hamish spoke up, also interested in getting a word in. “Are there any plans for a naval variant? I understand that we do not particularly have a way to use them as yet. However, you know my desires and asks, and I would appreciate some accommodations for the plans and designs that we have here.” Ewan nodded and spoke, “There are no plans yet for a naval variant, however, your request will be kept in mind as we go forward.” A few more moments passed, and the awkward silence that came from a room full of the most important people in the other Republic began to settle in. Before Sinclair broke it once again. “Then that is all we have for you. We expect secrecy from all of you, of course, until this information is released to the public. Which is when we give you the go-ahead to discuss this new project, I will inform you of what details I need from you afterward. Dismissed.” At that, each representative and official shuffled out of the room. Going about their various jobs and new responsibilities after getting the direction of the Ministry of Defense. Luca had already understood his task, and he expected to hear from Sinclair or Ewan soon. End Edited July 25 by Pentium (see edit history) 6
Pentium Posted July 25 Author Posted July 25 Blemish Air Institute, Parking Lot – 11:00 AM “Ready to go? We have a long day ahead of us.” Sinclair looked over to Ewan Dunbar and Luca O'Brien. His voice was surprisingly insulated within the vehicle. Luca suspected it to be some sort of protection that the car had installed into it. They both nodded to him, it would be a long trip up to Jade Cove, but it was important downtime for them to discuss the project. “Good, Driver! Get us moving.” Sinclair bumped the window, and shut the privacy mirror as the car began to move. The small crowd that had gathered outside and in the windows observed the government car closely, a few taking photos or sending messages to their friends. Surely something about Luca having been taken by government men. Perhaps something would show up on Wittier. “Alright, there are drinks and some light snacks in the middle part of the car if you'd like. But, I'll begin the brief here…” Sinclair pulled open his laptop, resting it on one of the seat rests. “We have a few designs we are following up on at the moment, PAC and BCAM of course… one from Jade Cove Civil Aircraft and something rather interesting from Whedon Aeronautics as well.” Sinclair handed his laptop off to Ewan and Luca, both of whom were sitting relatively close to each other. “The design from PAC almost feels like a regression from first glance, no radar, avionics beyond necessity, and a big gun. Who submitted this?” Luca leaned over, and chuckled a bit, “Seems like Peadar Speire, he's been advocating for low tech solutions for as long as I can remember. Not much good he's produced, thankfully he wasn't in charge when the PAC-61 was produced. We might've won the air war if you had somethin' like that.” “Agreed, he did get his wish when it came to the PAC-62LB though. But we've had to modify it to be a proper ground support plane. And why we couldn't get it flying during the Civil War, we weren't sure what was or wasn't friendly. That's going to be on the chopping block as well, we need more than just a bomber. We've been taking to the Seylosians about it, they've given us a good deal on their Harrier IIIBs.” “I was wondering about that, are you confident with handing our bombing capability off to a foreign nation?” Sinclair looked up at Ewan, the question was legitimate, it would be one of the first times that the WDC had ever replaced a domestic solution with a foreign made one. “It's a bit of a risk, I know. But ourselves and Seylos line up with several items politically, the navy has also been talking to them about augmenting our fleet with some of their craft. Besides, the Harriers are VTOL capable, the High Admiral was interested enough to split off some of his cash to the acquisition. He put his money where his mouth was for naval aviation.” “So I heard, frankly I'm surprised you got the WN and WAF to agree to anything, much less split off funding. Either way, if you are confident with them, I will be as well. I'm sure we will have to keep the '62 around anyway. The Whedon Aeronautics design should be on the next page there.” The two scrolled down onto the next page, it was a fairly sleek design. It was comparable to the PAC-61 in capability, speed, and armament. All while being smaller and having the same sort of simulated ability. Though, it also had its drawbacks. Low service ceiling, poor range and outdated components. “It's not bad, but there are some issues here. Some of it just isn't all there for me.” Ewan nodded as he looked over the data that was there, these were all estimations and simulations “Yeah, agreed it's a good design with the context of who made it. But it would need some modifications to be what we want. What else is there…” Ewan scrolled again, BCAM's design came up. It was a largely modified version of the PAC-61, enlarged with new technologies and modern equipment, but was made into a two engine and far heavier airframe. It incorporated many aspects they wanted, but was far larger, heavier and would be more expensive. “I do like it, but the size may be an issue. We'd have to see what we can fit into it while moderating the size, and we'd ideally want a single engine. It helps with manoeuvrability and Thrust to Weight, two engines aren't bad. But shouldn't be our focus for a light fighter to replace the '61.” Ewan simply nodded and moved along, agreeing with Luca. Finally, Jade Cove Civil Aircraft's design came up. It was very mediocre in most fields they could determine in this limited look over, they would likely go forward with most designs and allow these companies to move forward with some recommendations. The main difference was the AESA radar over the typical Pulse-Doppler. “The radar is very, very interesting. I've had a few fact finders get some information about these, I was going to bring it up later. But we should consider replacing the Dopplers with AESA. They have several distinct advantages we can make good use of. Even if the technology is more expensive, it's worth the cost.” Everyone nodded in the car, the agreement was good. They were still productive at least. “Which reminds me, we have put in an order for 30 Pojacki Davo helicopters. Very versatile craft we can use in ground support operations, they are set to start delivery in December. Another good discount, and came with support packages and training programmes for our pilots. We have begun to pull willing civilian helicopter pilots into special groups, as well as whatever reservists that can fly helicopters, to be our first batches. It'll help to reduce the training time massively, learning to fly a helicopter is hugely different from an aircraft.” The conversation continued for several hours, mostly on small talk and specifics. Up until they reached Jade Cove, the day was more or less already over for most workers, and the 3 were tired from discussions and technical talks. They would speak with people from JCCA tomorrow, and discuss what they were looking to improve with their design, this was going to be their next few days. End 3
Pentium Posted July 30 Author Posted July 30 JCCA Testing Grounds – 12:00 PM, 30/JUL/24 “I was surprised to see you so soon after we sent our design in for review, we aren't the largest company that entered into the competition. I'd presume you are here to discuss the airframe?” Artun Meyer, the CEO, walked with the trio. He had driven down to the headquarters after getting a frantic call from one of the front desk employees. They hadn't expected the sudden appearance of the cadre of governmental figures. “That we are, thank you for seeing us on such short notice, Mr. Meyer. We are more interested in seeing your radar than anything, there are many benefits to the multi-band structure I've been told. And we are very, very interested in it, even if we do not select your design, we'd love to see it implemented on it.” Sinclair looked at his two fellows, Ewan was taking down notes as they walked. Luca was quiet, as he usually was if he had nothing to add to the conversation. “The radar… I see, yes, well. It was based on a different design that we studied for a bit and created our version, it's highly adaptable and operates similarly to its counterparts around the Glube. Are you… at all interested in the frame itself? It's a good aircraft, and we are very confident in its capabilities.” Meyer smiled, trying to push his design a bit farther ahead. Sinclair was uninterested in the aircraft, none of the specifications were up to snuff, and in most aspects, it was worse than the PAC-61. It was only a few pieces of technology and marginal improvements that had been of interest to the government. “Of course, we are simply listing the features we are most interested in. We also do not expect most of these first designs to be the last after all, so judging an aircraft on what It can currently do seems rather incorrect, and we want to keep our options open before we make our decision. It would be unwise to play a side or prefer something from a previous supplier. We need something new, and something fresh, to properly meet our security needs. I'm sure you understand.” “If I could make some suggestions, then I'm sure you'd have a better idea of what the government is looking for. I'll leave you all the same sort of notes as we begin to refine our wants, needs and what we want to stay in. We had such a wide purview initially due to the stagnancy of our current force, we are already starting to narrow down our selection process based on what we are seeing from each of your designs, its all been very interesting to watch.” “I understand, we'd be most appreciative if you to define more closely what you are looking for then, our designs are all theoretical at the moment and utilizing simulations we can figure out the performance before we commit to building a proper mock-up. We can save resources this way, however we did need to create a few items physically for live testing. The radar is one of the pieces we have physically, and our engine and some other computer systems.” The party came to a locked door, and Artun swiped his key card to enter the R&D backroom. The room was relatively small but contained several pieces of technology, many of which seemed to be under study or development. A few researchers looked up towards Artun, and his guests. Nobody said a word as they returned to their work, Artun leaned back towards the trio and put a hand over his mouth. “Try to be quiet, the work here is proprietary and some of it is acoustically inclined. I'll show you the radar and the data we've gathered from it.” JCCA Testing Grounds – 3:00 PM, 30/JUL/24 The conclusion of the tour was a simple goodbye from each party, as Sinclair, Ewan, and Luca all shuffled back into their car and began the drive toward the airport. They had to go to Saltbrook channel for their next meeting, and the drive would take a significant amount of time. Sinclair had called in a chartered flight on a government instead of driving for several hours, it would save them several hours of sitting around. However, they had all agreed to use the flight as the time to unwind and relax for a bit, so they discussed what they had learned from JCCA. “Surprisingly informative, JCCA were far more prepared than I was expecting them to be. In past design competitions, they've been rather lacklustre in their offerings, however, their radar and avionics are highly impressive. Even if their frame was relatively uninteresting, I think we might be able to consider them far more highly than before. I suppose we will see what PAC can do then, they will have competition.” Luca drank from a water bottle from the refreshment compartment, looking over an information packet that had been provided to each of them. “Very impressive competition at that, technology-wise, anyway. PAC's design so far has only been impressive in its manoeuvrability and speed, both important aspects that we will need to consider, of course. But they have little in the way of avionics and support for the pilot, which is a serious oversight. We will be meeting with Peadar Speire today, so be prepared for that as well.” The car got quiet after they spoke about Peadar, nobody was excited about that conversation. Instead, they returned to small talk and reading over the packets. Eventually, their journey came to an end as they arrived at the airport. It was a small, domestic port, the only aircraft there was the chartered private jet. Boarding was simple and quick, and they were in the air soon after. The flight was estimated to take an hour. 3
Pentium Posted August 2 Author Posted August 2 Peadar Speire's Office, Pentium Aerospace Corporation – 2:37 PM As the trio of men arrived at PAC headquarters, the noise of the city slowly began to deaden. Saltbrook channel was the heart of Pentium's economy, enjoying large production facilities, shipping, foreign foods and experiences. It was a wonderful place for a businessman to be. The car came to a stop, and everyone loaded out. They were greeted by Peadar Speire himself, having made time for the meeting far ahead of its actual planned time. Peadar was a middle-aged man, short of hair and stature, having taken over the company nearly a decade ago from the previous CEO. In his tenure, there had been radical changes to the design philosophy within the company. With a larger focus on low-tech, cheaper designs that relied more on guns and bombs over missiles and radar. It was a unique perspective that was generally rejected among the annals of government and the military. They got down to business quickly, PAC didn't have a physical mock-up or technologies prepared for demonstration as yet. However, they used the same simulations to predict performance before creating the actual aircraft. After the pleasantries were exchanged between the two parties, Peadar left the room for a moment to gather the technical documents that the trio had come to collect. “Did he really graduate from B.A.I? Even in your early days as headmaster, you had your curriculum well settled, where the hell did he learn these ideas?” Ewan shook his head, the trio having a moment to discuss the ongoing meeting as Speire stepped out of his office for a few minutes. “Radar can't tell the difference between a truck full of supplies and a tank? We watched it happen a few days ago at JCCA, even our current systems can do that.” “Yes, he has his degree from us. But I could not tell you where he learned that idea, just wait until he tries to tell you about the clever pilot with a gun plane. Or that the PAC-61 was his design, just try not to lose your mind on it. PAC has fallen quite a bit in the technology sectors since he took over, and he believes that the low-cost solution is going to be the way forward, despite the rest of the glube embracing even more computerization and technological solutions. Just be prepared.” A few moments passed, as the middle-aged man entered the room again. A small smile was dressing his face as he returned to his chair again and began to take out a few technical documents, handing them off to the trio to review. He spoke before they even could open the packets. “I'm sure you'll notice the improvements we've made to the performance of the craft, it is far more capable of dogfighting many contemporary aircraft at the moment. It is what the PAC-61 should have been, a highly manoeuvrable and fast fighter aircraft that can shoot down almost whatever it comes across, sadly your offices have both denied my requests to change it over to something akin to that.” Sinclair spoke up before Ewan could, and before Luca could as well. Just to maintain good etiquette among the people here. “For good reason, you know, that for the longest time, we could not afford to do much at all with our previous budget. Now we have decided to move along from the ageing PAC-61 to a new aircraft, there is only so much we can do with this old frame.” Ewan looked over at the Minister, he took a breath and held his tongue, his friend knew him well enough to catch him before he talked out of turn. He spoke afterward in a much calmer tone. “Right, Sinclair is correct in his assessment that there have been significant deficiencies in our air projection power, which we are now rectifying slowly. Now, let's take a look at what we've got here.” All of them opened their packets, and after a few minutes of reading, they already understood what this was going to be. There was no unexpected information in it, a design for a fast and agile frame that lacked almost any kind of avionics package, hard points for bombs and fuel tanks only and no radar. It was not at all what they were looking for, this kind of aircraft was painfully out of date and would be far worse than the current PAC-61 in current service. Luca decided to speak up. “See, looking at the packet gives me a few concerns, Peadar. Mostly due to a few key features that are not present as I'd expect them, I'm just an advisor however, but I'm going to ask you a few questions about the design and its components. I find the lack of missile hard points, radar, and avionics to be highly concerning in this modern wurld. I understand that the benefit is the frame itself being very lightweight and manoeuvrable is a benefit, though, in this current environment, it would be woefully underprepared for a conflict with any of our potential adversaries. I would submit, as well, higher casualties among pilots who fly it, they will not even know they are being watched by an enemy before a missile hits and destroys the craft.” “I suspected you'd understand better, Mr. O'Brien. These are fancy and expensive gimmicks that have been unproven in any conflict recently, we are simply working with what we know will work and is combat-tested. I guarantee if we stripped a fair amount of that unreliable technology off the PAC-61, it would show significant improvements in its airframe. But, as you've asked us to do so, we are working on something new. And it is everything the PAC-61 should be.” “Enough. Please, gentlemen, we do not need to argue. If this is what they have prepared for us, then that is what they have. I presume that we have most of the technical information in these packets unless there are any important pieces that we are missing from the equation here, I believe that we have everything that we need?” Sinclair read the room, there was going to be very little to be gleaned from an adversarial conversation, especially with how argumentative Peadar was. He began to rise from his seat, the information packet in hand. The room was quiet as they shuffled out, and the trio did not linger inside the building for long. At least the worst part of this process was over for now, there was a rising feeling that Pentium Aerospace Corporation, despite having a long history with the government, would likely not be the creator of Pentium's new aircraft. 3
Pentium Posted August 7 Author Posted August 7 Saltbrook Channel, Riversguard International Airport – 10:37 AM Sinclair, Luca, and Ewan boarded their private jet again, the trio had another item to discuss. BCAM had sent forward their design plans via courier to the city ahead of time and had been delivered to their jet. They would have an hour or so before they would land in Whedon's Row to review their findings. The BCAM design was a traditional design, and was more of an updated design for the PAC-61 on a new airframe. While the parts remained relatively similar, updated to a more modern standard. “The frame is fairly impressive, which should be expected from BCAM I suppose. Though there are a few things that put me off it, it's too small for our purposes, I believe. It has a low operational range, few hard points. It's a good home defense concept, but for any air superiority mission it would be insufficient.” Ewan mused out loud as he reviewed the document, his interest had been palpable for a bit. “It could be worse, it could have been what we just saw. It doesn't do much new, which is what we were hoping for. In addition to what you mentioned, I think this has potential, however. They would be worth sending specifications to if this is what they are able to create without any direction.” “Gentlemen, before we continue on this line. I do have an update from the capital, we have received an offer for more helicopter frames, a transport variant this time rather than an attack helicopter. Something we also sorely lack in our arsenal, and for a good price too. From Velika, let me show you the specifications here.” Sinclair spun the laptop around and handed it off to Ewan, Luca wasn't interested in seeing the information too much. This wasn't his field of expertise, after all. While Ewan studied the sheet, and Sinclair relaxed for a few minutes. The last major meeting was tonight with Whedon's Row Aviation, they didn't expect anything exception from them though. “I like it, and I think it fits with what we are trying to build with our rotary aircraft. Navy capable, and allow for a new wing to support our infantry on the ground. It also opens the door for logistics, medevac and transportation for isolated teams, and rapid infil and exfiltration work. I say we move with this in addition to the Davo. Both would make for an excellent helicopter corp.” Ewan handed the laptop back to Sinclair. “I'm glad we agree on this again, and they aren't nearly as pricey as the Davo was. Though I believe that these are older, and obviously less well armed. Our recruitment drive for helicopter pilots has gone well to boot, several civilian pilots were happy with the sign on bonus, and our reservist section had several civilian pilots that were happy to move into active duty positions with potential promotions and pay increases. It's just training on the actual aircraft that will take time now.” A few moments of silence followed, as each party weighed and considered their thoughts. “Well, gentlemen. I'm rather old, and despite the lovely rest I had earlier today. I'd prefer if we leave the talks of business and money on the back burner while we have too. Shall we take this time to catch up?” Luca gave a sly smile, genuinely uninterested in the helicopter development. “Perhaps you both should, there will be more to discuss soon, of course. Sadly for me, though, I've got a situation that I have to keep tabs on. But, I'll leave it to myself, it doesn't particularly concern either of you. Though it may need your input eventually, Ewan. But we shall see.” End 2
Pentium Posted August 14 Author Posted August 14 The gentle hum of the jet’s engines filled the cabin as the trio settled into their seats. Luca leaned back, closing his eyes. Sinclair, however, couldn't fully disengage from the matters at hand, his mind already drifting back to the decisions looming over them. Ewan, still engrossed in the specs from Velika, absently tapped his fingers on the armrest. Time wasted away as the three sat idle, using the air time to collect themselves.; The last few days had been nothing but discussions and technical reviews, it was exhausting for Luca. But the moment didn’t last long. Sinclair’s phone buzzed, pulling Luca back to reality. He glanced at the screen, a frown tugging at the corners of his mouth. “Bad news?” Ewan asked, noticing the shift in Sinclair’s demeanour. “Not quite,” Sinclair replied, his voice neutral, “But it seems our meeting with Whedon’s Row Aviation is going to be cut short today, I've just received an update from their coordinator. They are going to be dropping out of the race early, apparently, they just don't have the resources or capacity to keep up with the contest. Unfortunate, but it makes our job a bit easier. We will still make our way to Whedon's Row, of course. I have a few things I need to catch up on, and Ewan will have a few reports to send out.” “More than a few I imagine, two designers to refine down and people to inform. And putting out requests to purchase a bunch of helicopters and aircraft from people around the Glube. It's going to be a messy few days for us, I'm confident it will all be worth it in the end though. We need this more than people realize, it helps that we finally have money for it too.” Sinclair nodded, his mind already calculating the steps ahead. The news from Whedon’s Row Aviation was unexpected, but not entirely surprising. The competition for the new contracts had been fierce, and only the most well-prepared would survive. Still, it was a shame. Sinclair had hoped to see what Whedon’s Row might bring to the table, even if only to benchmark against the others. The jet began its descent, the landscape of Whedon’s Row coming into view through the windows. The city sprawled out beneath them, a mix of old buildings and modern skyscrapers, with the airport’s runway stretching out like a thin line in the distance. As they approached their destination, the weight of the tasks ahead settled heavily on all three of them. This was a pivotal moment, one that would shape their future and the future of everything they’d been working toward. But despite the challenges, there was a sense of resolve among them. They had the resources, the expertise, and most importantly, the determination to see it through. They just needed to execute their vision now, and hope their partners in the private realm would be able to create something they were excited about. End OOC note: Thank god, this part is done. 2
Pentium Posted August 28 Author Posted August 28 Jade Cove, JCCA Testing Ground – 12:30 AM – Phase 3 Start Declan Finbar had been assigned as the JCCA Liaison with the Defense Ministry, and project overseer, at the request of Artun Meyer. His job on paper was simple, focus the project on what the ministry had requested of them. He had been working long enough at the company to earn himself a positive reputation with many of his colleagues and superiors, and had overseen several smaller civilian projects. Despite his experience, the myriad of paperwork and NDAs that had been pushed forward by the Ministry had put him off his game, JCCA had never been contracted to work under government-enforced secrecy. While the contract was still open to other major competitors, Lachlan Sinclair had begun to signal interest in continuing the project with JCCA. It was a double-edged sword to Declan, both the confidence of the Ministry in the work put forward, but also newfound pressure to deliver. It was an unexpected feeling for him, but as he watched over the engineers in the black room perform tests and record data, he heard a knock on the door, and it snapped him out of his idle-minded observations. “Come in.” “I hope I'm not bothering you too much by intruding on you so soon, Declan, I just wanted to see how you were settling in.” The cool smile and confidence of Artun filled the room slowly, his presence had been growing more common at the testing grounds after the visit from the Ministry. While he hadn't yet taken over control from the branch manager, everyone had a sense of unease with the CEO walking around their facility daily. “Ah, hello, Mr. Meyer. It's good to see you again, I'm just getting familiar with my new office space, and meeting the team. It has all been exciting, and I have high hopes for the project overall.” “Good, good. You and I are thinking the same way then, I'm sure you understand how large of an opportunity we've been handed here. From what I understand, the Ministry has some interest in our work here, they've even sent us a packet of things they'd like to be in their new aircraft, and a list of technology they are interested in developing further. If we can land this contract, or even just produce and sell some of the tech to the government, then we won't have to worry about our revenue streams for at least a decade or two.” Artun was, to put it lightly. Beyond excited about the prospect, clearly, and the nice boost to his bottom line was there to boot. “I see, well I assure you that I am working towards the eventual success that we need. We all want to get it started up and get to work, everyone is excited to start working on it, even without the possibility of winning the government contract. We've got a good team assembled here.” Declan smiled, several bits of data and new information had already begun to trickle up towards his desk to review. He was not an engineer or scientist, so most of it had to be broken down for him to understand. But he was only there to record and manage. “I'm glad. I'll leave you to it, but I'll be checking in from time to time for progress reports. Have a good day, Declan.” End 3
Pentium Posted September 21 Author Posted September 21 Whedon's Row, Parliament Building, Ministry of Defense Offices – 9:45 AM Lachlan Sinclair sat alone in his office, developmental reports had been steadily coming into his purview as modifications were made to the designs submitted. Much of which was far more satisfactory to the requests of the ministry, however there was another issue arising from modernization, a need for new munitions and arms. Some of the previous armament could be ported over to the new aircraft, such as bombs and guns. However, the old PACAA missile was starting to get outdated and may cause the new aircraft to be far less effective than it should be. Thankfully for the MoD, the PACAA's replacement had been pondered for a while before the decision to create a new aircraft, and there were a few already in development replacements, and modernization packages floating around in the limbo of weapons development. These projects would be utilized to assist in completing the offshoot question of the aircraft development process. Sinclair drafted an email to a few weapons development corporations, whom would be given additional access to project details. It would add additional costs onto the final project, but would create a better aircraft in the end. When he sent the email out, there was a knock on the door. “Come in.” The door creaked as it opened, as it had for the last 3 years that he had been in position. However, there was a more pressing matter than the door, as Callahan stepped into the office. The timing was favorable for him at least, and it was about time for the weekly briefing on the progress of the project. “Good Morning, Mr. President. I hope the commute here wasn't too bad?” “It was well enough, Lachlan. The reconstruction of the capital has been going on for long enough that the roads aren't much of a concern any longer. I thought it prudent to speak to you early today, I will be busy with our flag ceremony for sometime soon. Despite all that, I'm still trying to make time for your project here.” Callahan sighed, he seemed tired. Perhaps the office was starting to take its toll again on him, the stresses of these jobs were overwhelming. No matter who you were. “Well, you'll be pleased to hear that we've had some positive developments. JCCA and BCAM have been producing excellent simulation data and timetables for our project, even WRA dropping out of the competition early, and PAC not really being considered. The project is shaping up very nicely, and we should be seeing some prototypes soon enough, I was just sending an email about new armaments as well.” “Good… good, it's nice to have some positive news for once. This job is… what I expected it to be, truthfully, but you'd never expect the demands these people can have. But, that's neither here nor there, keep up the good work Mr. Sinclair, I have my confidence that you'll produce something wonderful for the WAF. These are what I allocated the funds for, after all, it's good seeing such progress.” “Thank you, Mr. President. I will see you around then, have a good day.” “And you as well.” End 3
Pentium Posted October 9 Author Posted October 9 Whedon's Row, Parliament Building, Conference Hall -2 – 8:45 PM Sinclair, Luca, and Ewan reconvened their efforts in one of the many conference rooms within a secure section of the parliamentary building. It was not part of the secure areas underground, meant for keeping the government functional and running in the event of a national emergency. But it was not an area that was known by everyone in government, the secrecy was now a required part of the development and creation process that it was an official project. Things had moved forward on schedule, most of the technology that was being put into the new aircraft had already been developed and implemented in countless examples around the Glube. Despite that, any defence projects had to have a level of secrecy when the government wasn't under direct threat and due to the large technological jump being made within that nation's aviation wing, it had been deemed that a clearance would be needed. Sinclair and Ewan were already cleared due to their positions in the government, but getting Luca his clearance had been a frustrating process. Despite his contributions and effort with the government, after a bit of painstaking politicking and wrist-twisting, it had been done. They were reviewing the two designs that had been refined from their previous iterations. Significant improvements had been made in several areas of contention, and followed more contemporary aircraft design, rather than a reliance on previous designs. Which seemingly had become a theme in these last few months, there was an amount of uncertainty to the change. Pentium had been a nation of traditionalism, and it had been for several generations, but that rooted culture had its disadvantages and needed to be shaken up every so often. Perhaps this was one of the generations that would shake up the foundations of the Republic. “As I was saying, there are a few inspirations for it. But we are still making something unique here, and improvement on what there currently is no less. And as far as I'm aware, that's what we had set out to do. To make something new, something that would innovate our military strategy and capability. We are meeting a new age, and we need to be prepared for it before it comes kicking down our door. The Civil War showed us that we were, and still are woefully unprepared in several areas of our defensive requirements. We still have a battleship, for god-sake, these stopped being viable nearly eighty years ago now.” “I suppose, it's not like we were set up for success, though. We were stuck in a state of near limbo for decades as we rebuilt ourselves after the end of the war, no offence Luca. But the Southern Union thrashed us, we barely had the money to rebuild ourselves. No way we were going to keep the budget for the military together, that money was required for rebuilding infrastructure.” “None taken. But we have allowed stagnancy regardless, and even though we were not prepared for what would come after, we should not let that define our efforts in the future. As justified as it may or may not be.” The room returned to its quiet work, the occasional spat between the three being the only constant, other than the ticking of the clock by the door. This particular meeting had lasted longer than expected, but there was no allotted time for these meetings. Thankfully, they were nearly done with this part of their duties. At this point, it was more about setting up simulations, test flights and criteria for the aircraft. It would be against the currently existing PAC-61, and each other. Whichever could perform best, would be the one adopted, refined further and likely put into service to replace the PAC-61 over time. It was an exciting time. END 2
Pentium Posted November 4 Author Posted November 4 (edited) North of Saltbrook Channel, Anterior Airfield, 4:15 PM The day had finally arrived. After thousands of man-hours, simulations, testing and all other manner of effort into creating two prototype aircraft and delivering them in secret to one of the most isolated airbases in all of Pentium. Results after such an arduous task were beyond gratifying for the two men responsible for getting the ball rolling on the project. For Lachlan Sinclair, it was akin to a crowning achievement for his office and his reputation. In addition to keeping the Republic safe from theoretical external threats, he had won the ear of President Callahan through his skillful distribution of work, contracts, and acquisition in a reasonable timescale and cost. As for Ewan Dunbar, it was far less of an achievement than it was a statement. Interservice rivalries and the politics between them had pushed the airforce further and further down the ladder for funding and new projects, a trend that had forced his predecessor to make required cutbacks and compromises that endangered the very existence of his independent airwing. Through cooperation and strategic alliances with his colleagues in the Warden Navy, he had managed to begin digging himself out of the rut previously established, the creation of an all-new aircraft though? It was going to be lighting a fire under the seats of the other heads. Although he wasn't here because of a sudden sickness he had come down with, Luca O'Brien was proud of the work had his colleagues had managed to push through. Despite the difficulties in some areas of partnerships due to conflicting ideas, or lack of interest in some cases. The two firms competing for the new aircraft had put forward serious and excellent designs for the era. It was no F4 Thunder like the Gallambrians had, but it was still a serious advancement in domestic aviation within Pentium, not to mention the acquisition of new support aircraft and helicopters. This was the preamble for the actual test flights, respective corporate engineers were scouring the two aircraft to make sure everything was working as intended. Several air maintenance officers were with them, observing and taking notes. There was an expected excitement surrounding these prototypes and there was little point in trying to keep out people with keys and access cards from looking around after hours, Lachland had allowed a select group of on-base personnel to get limited hands-on experience with both aircraft. They were going to be heavily trialled and tested before a winner was decided and awarded the contract to produce the craft. After his walk by, Ewan returned to speak with Lachland about his findings. “She's impressive, there's no doubt about that. Another marvel of technology and Pentian ingenuity, unless you want to count what Peadar Speire has to say about the PAC-61 being God's greatest gift to aviation. I can't wait to see the look on his face when we reveal these to the public, these are both beauties. Unless something catastrophic happens during the tests, I think we've got two winners on our hands. Until we decide which one loses.” “Yes, Ewan. Both are exceptional weapons, it is a shame that we have to select just one. Though, I am pleased that our project has gone so well for the most part, on budget and on time. That should be our new motto for the Ministry, eh? I don't think the public would enjoy that much, though, just looking at the older projects that didn't go anywhere. Maybe keep it an internal motto.” Sinclair smiled, watching the gaggle of engineers look around the aircraft, taking notes and understanding the fundamentals of the new aircraft. “Keep it internal, nobody would believe that it's true anyway. A governmental body rarely does something efficiently, especially with the perception lingering after the last government reigned over nearly a decade semi-successfully. We might be different, but we aren't that different in many ways from the last government. At least, we have yet to show that to the general public in a significant way beyond the obvious differences in our policy.” “Avoiding speculation, Ewan. We are here for a very different reason and purpose, and we shouldn't be all that concerned about what the domestic side of our government is working on at the moment for our purposes here. Either way, we should be getting ready for tomorrow beyond anything. It's going to be a big day, I've heard a rumour that the President himself might be showing up to see the show. So prepare yourself for that, just in case he does have enough time in his busy schedule to show up.” END Edited November 10 by Pentium spelling (see edit history) 1
Pentium Posted November 10 Author Posted November 10 North of Saltbrook Channel, Anterior Airfield, 9:15 AM The three aircraft were in the sky, testing their avionics, maneuverability and finding the limits of what the airframes were capable of. A cadre of senior ranking airmen, governmental officials and engineers were watching with intrigue as the potential next generation of Pentian aircraft began to link up side by side to reset their test. The president had called ahead to declare his absence during the initial test, having his time eaten up by the creation of the RPASP, the assignment of a new minister and assignment of assets, budget allocation and the other requisite tasks to set up another layer of public sector bureaucracy. The council of judges had their criteria, using the PAC-61 as a benchmark for performance initially. Testing for improvements in performance, onboard systems, maneuverability and several other minor factors. This was only half the test, as after a baseline was established in competition towards the PAC-61, both aircraft would be tested against one another to determine which was superior in establishing air superiority. BCAM and JCCA designs did well against the PAC-61, which was the expected result going forward. The sheer amount of new technology and improvements implemented from outside designs and creations shining brightly against the aging and worn frames of the ancient PAC-61. While it would put up a decent showing, and the pilot showed an expertise in piloting the aircraft he would likely have been in for so long, the difference in design and technology gave the new aircraft an edge over the old. The real testing would begin as the two aircraft began to go against each other, the two aircraft swung around on each other in challenged air maneuvers meant to push the extremes of the aircraft's frames and systems. JCCA's model was performing at a higher level than BCAM's design, with a few hiccups as the pilots began getting more used to the differences between the PAC-61 and either design model. There had been simulations to help ease the testers into the new feeling of the craft, but there was no real substitute for getting your hands on the real deal. The two aircraft flew for roughly an hour, both taking part in combat drills and testing of both the pilots, airframe and onboard systems to see how they operated under stress. It wouldn't be a comprehensive test of course, there wasn't enough time in the wurld to test out all the issues that may arise from the new system. It would take several hours for the verdict to be completed, after such a long period of effort and work. The JCCA's design was given the greenlight to go ahead with final refinement and adoption as the new fighter jet of the WAF. END. Yippie. 2
