Mining in the Kunijan

The Kunijan Mountains (Kunijos Kalnai or Kunijan-Gebirge in Ras and Dolch respectively) are a group of various large mountains and cliffs situated within Balticas interior. Collectively, they make up ¼ of all land within the nation, and form the boundary between the warm and dry Baltican East Coast and more wet Baltican West. The Mountains themselves, although fairly poor for farming, nonetheless have both a large livestock sector, and an even larger textile industry, that collectively employ a large part of the native population. Additionally, although sparsely populated when in comparison to both the Western and Eastern Coast, the Kunijan still houses a population of over a million people. Although these mountains are quite expansive, and contain multiple water sources, they were believed to hold little to no mineral or metal resources, except for the occasional Iron or sulphur deposit. However, surveys conducted from 2010-2015, revealed that there were in fact, many mineral and metal deposits within the Kunijan, but most were relatively underground, hidden much deeper than most surface level technology was able to initially detect. Further census conducted shortly before the outbreak of the Baltican Civil War, also revealed that most of these underground deposits could be financially viable for extraction. With the war now over, the government, alongside various other private entities, have decided that the newly discovered mineral wealth of the Kunijan is far too large to be left as is. As such, a bid was organised in late March, over full mining rights within the Kunijan, and eventually the fairly small and regional, Rock and Stone Mining Co, was able to win out, and gained mining rights to the whole of the Kunijan.

When it comes to mining, Baltica is far from being the leading nation in the Industry. There is both a lack of domestic mining machinery, and also a lack of trained personnel. Similarly with both the recent Liplan-Shceme, and the Baltican Rail Reconstruction, a majority of the foreign capital is being outsourced from other nations, with a majority of new mining equipment for Rock and Stone, coming from @Ateenia, who has one of the largest mining industries in Argis. Additionally, alongside that, various experienced Ateenian officials are being called upon to aid in the training and supervising of Baltican workers, in hope to expand the domestic industry of Baltica in future…

Mining Operations

Currently three major mines are planned to be opened within the Kunijan mountains, all of which will be “Underground Mines”, utilising Underground Mining techniques, for the extraction of copper, bauxite and nickel. Various smaller open pit mines are also being sponsored along the outskirt of the Kunijan Mountains (Referred to as the Kunijan Hills), but these are only for the extraction of rock salt, and quarry stones such as limestone and granite. If the underground mining operations prove to be successful, the government plans to sponsor the opening of further mines on the behalf of Rock and Stone. Lastly, in order to support the extraction of these materials, the Baltican government and Rock and Stone have both begun investments into improving the regional infrastructure within the Kunijan, as well as providing housing for the various influx of workers that are expected to coincide with the project…
