Pretanic Isles
History: A summary written in “A Impartial History of Pretannia” by Jenny Wormald; “The Commonwealth of the Pretanic Isles was once a penal colony under the Anglian Empire where those of Geltic heritage were unjustly sent to as a result of their rebelliousness against the tyrannical Imperial government during the early 18th century. The transportation was long and arduous, with many of the freedom-fighters perishing from disease on the way to ‘Pretannia’ to serve their sentences. And when they arrived at the lush Pretanic islands, they were forced to figure out their own survival, causing many to starve due to exposure and lack of nutrition. However, after many years of suffering, the free-fighters were able to build a proper string of self-sustainable settlements along the coast that prospered from inter-Alharian trade away from the Empire - Admittedly with small trade import taxes from Anglian’s unfortunate imperial interference. They were able to preserve their Geltic traditions and culture as a result of continual Anglian disinterest. However, the Anglian government soon got into a conflict of influence in the Alharu continent, forcing the Pretannic’s involvement as a result of them being a ‘colony’. This led to rebellion in the ranks of the Pretons, who rightfully began a war of independence against the Anglian government who was attempting to enforce their tyranny on other nations. They were successfully able to break off from the Imperial yoke as a result of help from other nations rivalling the Anglians, with August 23rd being chosen as their Independence Day.” Geography The geography of the Commonwealth is a mostly flat area with natural harbours surrounding its coast. However, it has iron and coal deposits, with oil deposits lying off its coast. It gets very little in the way from agricultural production, being mostly reliant on outside imports to meet its food needs. This has caused discontent with the outbreak of war across the Aurelian continent. Economy The economy is primarily based on trade, resulting in a low-tax environment being produced. Resources are provided to the industry of Pretannia which are then refined into products traded to other nations or sold internally within the isles. Government The Commonwealth’s government is based on the Humble Petition and Advice. There are three elements to this government with the executive, judicial, and legislative powers invested in those elements as a whole. These elements are the Lord Protector and His council; The Upper House of Pretannia; And the House of Commons of Pretannia. The Lord Protector and His council is the executive, ‘Kingly’ branch of government. It is invested with full executive powers and also checks on the House of Commons and the Upper House. The Lord Protector is an elected position that is held for fifty years, where the prior Protector would choose his successor and then the House of Commons would approve it. The Lord Protector is expected and required to enforce the laws of the Realm, as well as maintain the stability of the realm within his constitutional limits. However, in this, the Upper House can argue that acts of the Lord Protector have violated the stability of the realm or the constitutionality of the government. The House of Commons is the legislative branch of governance. It is invested with the power to make laws that are necessary and proper for the realm. It is able to amend the constitution, pass new laws & taxes, and where that money is sent to within the Commonwealth government - With approval from the Lord Protector. The House of Commons is a 650 member body, who are elected by local constituent assemblies. It is the most-checked body in the Pretannia government - Where the Lord Protector can veto its laws and the Upper House can rule its passages as unconstitutional. It, however, approves who may go on into the Upper House, though the Lord Protector chooses ‘appointees’ to that House. The House of Commons is expected and required to create a government that increases the chances of success of Pretannia’s nation. The Upper House of Pretannia is the judicial branch of governance. It is the highest court in the land and is expected to rule on matters of constitutionality and be the final court for all law-appeals in the Commonwealth. It rules on if the Lord Protector and the House of Commons have acted unconstitutionally and the court is demanded to be impartial in all matters. Its checks are that its members are appointed by the other two branches and that it contains no ability to make laws or enforce its decisions. Ethnicity: After a series of internal conflicts, Pretannia contested native lands and were able to remove them from their claimed territory. This has led to natives making up four percent of the population, with the rest being 82% Geltic and a mixture of Lysians and Anglians. They are primarily Catholic with the rest being a part of other Christian denominations or Atheist. Statistics: 2 - GPA 2- Population 0 - Landmass Future Plans: Pretannia has an interest in being involved in the Anglian conflict and potentially restoring Geltic cultural influence to its former country. 6 Link to comment
