Speech of Hate

Aurivizh

“It is short and to the point, I would give Kyrios Gwernig that.”

The voice of the Tagmatine spymaster was whisper-quiet and raspy but not so quiet that Eugenios Goulielmos couldn't identify the element of sarcasm within it. The spymaster, Andronikos Keftedes, was pallid and skeletal in appearance with close-cropped black hair and a neatly trimmed dark beard. Goulielmos was never sure whether Keftedes' look was an affectation or not. Along with the rasping voice, it was made to fit in with what someone might expect a chief spy to look like. Insofar as Eugenios was aware, Keftedes wasn't a chain smoker or had ever had a medical diagnosis that would have resulted in such a voice. Although physically very different, both men wore what was almost the uniform of the Tagmatine government – a dark, conservative business suit. Keftedes used the Tagmatine equivalent to "mister" to refer to the Head Minister of @Aurivizh.

The spymaster was also Kommodos' main enforcer and he had been rewarded for his loyalty to the old tyrant in the aftermath of the 2005 Civil War by being made the head of a combined intelligence agency. In other nations or in other times, this would likely have made Keftedes the power behind the throne. However, the man was a religious zealot who saw his role as strengthening the power of God's chosen ruler on Eurth. This meant that he was fanatically loyal to Kommodos and he had apparently never dreamed of doing anything other than excelling at his allotted role.

Sat across the austere glass desk from Goulielmos, Keftedes held a printed copy of the speech given by the Head Minister of Aurivizh, although it was more of a prop than anything else. Both men had read it several times before the meeting with Eugenios Goulielmos, the Megas Logothetes ton Barbaron, the Grand Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tagmatium. The spymaster placed the paper on the table and slid it across towards the foreign minister, who didn't bother picking it up. He had read it before and even had an annotated version on the computer screen in front of him.

“Yes, it is,” replied the Megas Logothetes. He used his thumb to push his glasses back up to the bridge of his nose. “Surprisingly so, really. I am not necessarily sure why it is so... brazen. Kyrios Gwernig is surely aware that Arhomaneia takes a keen interest in the events in eastern Argis, especially after the end of the last war between those two.”

The spymaster gave a shrug and Goulielmos imagined the creak of dry bones as he did so. The pair of them were sat in the office of the Megas Logothetes in the main office of the ministry of foreign affairs, the Grafeion Pittigaudeion. Unlike the usually ostentatious and anachronistic style usually favoured by Tagmatines, the office was furnished in a subdued, sleek décor that would not have looked out of place as the office of a tech CEO or a similar sort of executive with a modernist aesthetic bent. It was nothing like the suite set aside for the minister in the Basilikon Synkrotima Palation, the Imperial Palace Complex. The floor to ceiling windows provided a great view over the political capital of Tagmatium, which was in the grips of a midwinter freeze. Snow covered the roofs of all the buildings in sight, with roads a stark web of dark veins, where they could be seen.

The big windows did mean that the office was slightly chilly, although the typically Aroman underfloor heating took the edge of it. Sometimes, Goulielmos regretted the environmental policies of his monarch – he would loved to have had the heating full blast on days like this.

“I imagine that Kyrios Gwernig will know that it would put both of his nation's neighbours onto the defensive,” said Keftedes. “Especially considering the recent conflict with the Ebrarioi.”

Goulielmos nodded. “The response by them was pretty even-handed. And swift.”

Both men were silent for a moment. As major policy went in the Greater Holy Empire, Kommodos had already met with both of them and laid out his wishes. It was up to them to put these into action. Very little happened in the government of Arhomaneia that the Aroman monarch had not personally decided, although sometimes, the favoured officials were given leeway in choosing how it was actually enacted.

Although there were officially only three people in the room – Goulielmos, Keftedes and the chief civil servant of the former, there were actually numerous aides, servants and the occasional priest dotted around the room. One of them took that moment to step forward and refill the cups of tea that were sat upon the desk before fading back into the edges of the room.

“It was tailored to assure try to defuse the situation started by Kyrios Gwernig and to attempt to nip it in the bud.” Keftedes picked up his cup of tea, held it for a moment, decided it was too hot and put it down again. “Considering the history between the two nations, I'm surprised it even had to come to this, as the reason to recognise the ethnic Aurivizoi.”

The irony of the fact that Tagmatium didn't internally recognise any ethnic group was either left unsaid or was entirely unrecognised.

Prokathemenos Renaldo has made a bold play,” agreed Goulielmos, using the Laimiaic word for 'president'. “It should go some way to at least diffuse the situation internally, so long as their parliament passes it. And it would be stupid for them to not to, considering Auriviziki leader has said.”

Keftedes lifted his cup of tea to his mouth again and decided that it wasn't too hot this time. He took a brief sip and put it back in its saucer. “Perhaps not as stupid as carrying out the stated plans the Aurivizoi.”

“No.” It was Goulielmos' turn to shrug. The move made his glasses slip down his nose and and he pushed them back up again. “No, that'd be damn stupid. I imagine that the Auriviziki is aware that they've shot themselves in the foot with this, at least for the time being. I'd heard that Khalkeos was preparing a pitch for them, too. That has been put on hold, by order of Kommodos.”

'Khalkeos' meant the Logothesion tou Kommerkiarionikou, the Ministry for Trade. Takitos Khalkeos was the Minister for Trade and the Agios Basilikon Kounsistorion, the Holy Imperial Government, was interested in striking up trade deals with most of the nations of east Argis. It had already pitched agreements with @Nyantastan and @Ebrary. Aurivizh would have been next, as well as @Gotneska. Now a spanner had been thrown into those plans.

“The Seilosioi would likely love to stick their noses into this sort of thing, too,” said Goulielmos, thoughtfully, sitting back in his chair. “That sort of thing is right up their via.”

The Megas Logothetes looked over at his Protoasekretis, his chief civil servant. The man nodded and made a note on notepad that he then secreted away.

The foreign minister then sat back up again and looked over at Keftedes. “So, to get down to business – Kommodos wants the situation much more closely monitored than it currently is.”

“I have assured his majesty that I will have more 'trawlers' in the waters off the coastal waters of all three countries,” said the spymaster. The 'trawlers' were little more than spy ships with a veil of legitimacy lent by masquerading as long-range fishing vessels, usually flying the flag of the Tagmatine merchant marine. The Gharoi (@Haruspex) especially had learnt to be wary of any apparent fishing vessel. “His majesty has also agreed that any information that my agency gathers will be shared with your logothesion as well as the Epistrategaion. The Epistrategaion has, in turn, agreed that any information that their intelligence picks up will be shared with the both of us.”

The question was unspoken but obvious.

Goulielmos nodded. “Of course, Kefale. I will make sure that our resources are pooled for this. None of us want this to get any worse than it currently is.”

From: the Agios Basilikon Kounsistorion of the Megas Agios Basileia ton Arhomaion

Your Excellency,

Although Arhomaneia is not directly involved with events in eastern Argis, they are of key concern to the Agios Basilikon Kounsistorion. Peace in that part of the wurld is of utmost importance of my government, especially since my nation has had frequent contact with many of the nations there. A stable eastern Argis benefits not just those nations located there, but all the nations of Argis and the wider wurld. The tone struck by the Head Minister of Aurivizh, Tudig Gwernig, was especially concerning, as it was noticeably irredentist and appears to have the sole aim of destabilising not just your nation, but your relative neighbour, the Kingdom of Gotneska.

Therefore, on behalf of my nation, I would like to offer the Ebrariki government and people the assurance that Arhomaneia will strive to make sure that conflict does not break out between your nation and Aurivizh. The Megas Agios Basileia has no wish to see history repeat itself, especially since the last conflict between your nation and the State of Aurivizh was conspicuous in its brutality. At the moment, there does not seem to be any need to go further than to issue messages to the parties concerned but the Agios Basilikon Kounsistorion will keep a close eye on the situation as it progresses. I pray that this is as far as it goes and his excellency, Tudig Gwernig, was merely using this as an opportunity for a bombastic and crowd-pleasing speech and not the opening phase of something that eventually snowballs into true support for an uprising or a true conflict.

May God see to it that peace is restored.

Your excellency,

The Holy Imperial Government of the Greater Holy Empire of Tagmatium praises your Head Minister and your government on your strident words over the fate of your fellow Aurivizhts in other nations – it is always the case that a nation must protect its own, especially if they are under threat. However, it does seem that perhaps the language used in the address is quite strong – it seems to imply that other nations are oppressing those peoples, when evidence suggests that this is not the case, at least to the extent that his excellency, Head Minister Tudig Gwernig suggests. Indeed, his excellency appears to go on to suggest that there seems be a need for “a strike” to happen against those nations, which are the Kingdom of Gotneska and the Christian Commonwealth of Ebrary.

Therefore, the Holy Imperial Government wishes for some clarification of these words used by the Head Minister, and the statement as a whole, especially since it seems to be clamouring for what seems to be ethnic violence. Our nations are both Christian nations, and the nations his excellency seemed to target are also Christian-majority, if not outright Christians. It should, therefore, follow that all of us favour peace over violent conflict. It is realised by Tagmatium that there is a history of warfare between the nation concerned, and it is felt that this should be enough to dissuade further armed action in the future.

Due to this, his Aroman Majesty, Kommodos III, by the Grace of Christ the God, Holy Emperor and Autocrat and Equal-to-the-Apostles, has stated that my government is once again willing to act as a go between to find a peaceful and diplomatic solution to any issues that may become pressing in the immediate future.

Faith in Christ is our shared ground,

Eugenios Goulielmos

From: the Agios Basilikon Kounsistorion of the Megas Agios Basileia ton Arhomaion

Your Excellency,

Peace in eastern Argis is something that is dear to the people and government of the Greater Holy Empire of Tagmatium. It does appear that the speech issued by his excellency, Head Minister Tudig Gwernig of the State of Aurivizh is alarmist in what it calls for. It does remain to be seen whether Aurivizh will continue to call for this, or whether this speech was an outlier. However, either way, I can assure your excellency that the Holy Imperial Government will strive for peace in eastern Argis and will attempt to find a diplomatic solution to the issues faced not just by your kingdom, but by Ebrary and Aurivizh as well. This may mean that my government would offer to act as a go-between for your nations, in a capacity to stem the possibility of any genuine conflict between your nations.

Either way, the people of Gotneska and her majesty Queen Sarah can be assured that other nations are watching the situation and will attempt to strive towards peace. Ethnic violence and armed conflict are not in the interests of any of the nations involved, even though it does appear that some of them are working towards just that. Instead, peace and understanding are to be prized over conflict, especially when fanning the flames of ethnic conflict can only result in internecine violence that could only spread further. Due to this, my nation can only state that will support any and all endeavours towards peace made in eastern Argis.

Through faith in God, peace will once again reign.

My Queen and her people would like to thank you for your open support to keep our region in peace. Open conflict is something no one ever what's. We hope that the Head Minister of Aurivizh, dosen't intend to start a ethic conflict. I and my Queen believe that Gwernig, could just be turning to rally support for his people. But let me be clear, my nation has never treated the Aurivizht as outcasts we share to many things in common, but then again they can still find a way to dislike us. For reasons my people don't understand.

God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. Matthew 5:9 NLT

From: David Redman, Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Delamaria

Your Excellency,

The Commonwealth of Delamaria and the government has taken keen interest in the current happenings in north east Argis, and considering the proximity to our borders we consider any possible escalation a threat to our regional security. I have consulted with the President and we have decided to offer our diplomatic support to your nation should the situation become more serious.

We believe that Ebrary and Delamaria can prove to be partners in this circumstance and we fervently hope that a peaceful solution can be brokered within the region. The core aim of the Delamarian foreign policy is to maintain regional and glubal peace, and in turbulent times such as these no matter how small a disagreement may seem to occur, one should remain wary of further escalation that could soon lead to an open conflict.

We hope to hear from you soon and look forward to a swift solution to your predicament.

Yours,

David Redman,

Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Delamaria.

From: Bruce Axelrod, Director of the Delamarian Security Service and Deputy Secretary of National Security

Your Excellency,

The current conflict occurring in north east Argis is of great concern to the Service, and after discussing with the Vice President I have been authorised to make contact with your government. Publicly the Delamarian government must support Ebrary, as its liberal democracy is popular among Delamarians and within parts of the federal government.

Any communication between Delamarian government institutions and Aurivizh is secret and it would be most preferable if that was kept on your end as well. The Delamarian Security Service will handle communications such as this and I have been ensured that it is encrypted against foreign intelligence gathering.

The DSS considers Aurivizh to be a potential partner in conducting its operations and ultimately achieving regional security.

Thanks,

Director Axelrod,

Delamaria Security Service
