Dniester is a Republic. The parliament of Dniester has an upper house, the Senate, and a lower house, the Sejm. Both houses are accommodated in the Sejm complex in Minsk. The parliament itself is without an official name; the Constitution refers only to the Sejm and the Senate. Members of both houses are elected by direct election, usually every four years. The Sejm has 460 members, while the Senate has 100 senators. To become law, a bill must first be approved by both houses, but the Sejm and President can override a Senate refusal to pass a bill. On certain occasions, the Marshal of the Sejm summons the National Assembly, a joint session of the members of both houses. Its function is mostly ceremonial in nature, and it only convenes occasionally, such as to witness the inauguration of the President. Under exceptional circumstances, the constitution endows the National Assembly with significant responsibilities, such as the power to bring the President before the State Tribunal (impeachment). The current leading party is the Socialist Unity Party (SUP) with 234 out of 460 seats in Sejm and 61 out of 100 seats in Senate. The two debating halls have designated seats for the deputies, senators and the Marshals, equipped with voting devices, used by the deputies and senators to vote. Military - How is your nation's safety ensured? The Unified Armed Forces of Dniester are the national armed forces of the Republic of Dniester. The Unified Armed Forces of Dniester are the Dniesterian Land Forces, Dniesterian Navy, Dniesterian Air Forces, Dniesterian Air Assault Forces and the Internal Security Forces which are under the command of the Minister of Defense. The Dniester National Defence Commission is the central military commission for everything related to internal policing. It currently controls the National Police, Ministry of Internal Surveillance and Security, Militsiya, and the Internal Security Forces branch of the Unified Armed Forces of Dniester. Economy - How do your citizens earn their income? The Republic of Dniester institutes market socialism in order to sustain the economy. Five-year plans were used at first in order to jumpstart the economy but market socialism is the economic system being used now. Demographics - More details about your citizens Like many developed nations, Dniester is aging. In 1950, the median age was 25.8: half of the Dniestrian population was younger, half older. Today it is 38.2. If current trends continue, it may be 51 by 2050. As the population is aging, it also started to decline in the 1980's mainly due to low birth rates and continued emigration which impacted the economy, however this has started to change.
