Mauridiviah
I found this form on the "Cultural Information" topic and thought it would be cool to fill it out for my factbook. How do your citizens see their country? -Mauridivians see their country as the greatest in the world, despite its many problems, they're very optimistic that Mauridiviah can be the very best. Of course, most people just spend their day at the beach and don't really work towards that goal, but reality and perception can be very different things. How do your citizens see other countries? -Not very important. Very few people really care about them, however some eccentric countries like Lily Flower (Fleur de Lys) have probably made a name for themselves. I'm sure if Mauridiviah ever gets on the map my neighbors will be regarded in high esteem, as Colombia used to be regarded in Venezuela for many years before the recent border crisis. How are the other country's names written on your country? (put only some, of course) -I actually made a list of national exonyms for every nation that was in the region at the time, it can be seen above. How do your citizens see life? How's their behaviour and point of view towards the government? -Mauridivians see life as one's opportunity to have fun. Of course, this does have boundaries but for the most part people don't want to deal with drama or politics or debate or philosophy. This has the effect of making the nation's government a very esoteric group of "boring" politicians who "lie constantly". Mauridivians vote for them regardless. Mauridivians think that the government should serve them and other people (4th place in regional foreign aid!). Otherwise, they see it as either the most important thing or the least important thing, with most people being political apathets at any given moment. Despite the fact that they are apathets however, they can recognize that there are problems in the country. They just don't think government is the proper solution for it. They don't have an alternative, but government is not the solution for it, apparenlty. How are the arts in your country? Literature, music, plastic arts, etc. -Mauridivian literature is just regular Hispanic literature, however there is a new branch of writers that is beginning to spawn who might change that. (After all, all the classics aren't even in the same language anymore.) Most people like reggaeton with a few being classical music fans. A wide variety of 80s music is however the most popular. People like to try their hand at pottery making but often suck at it. There are some painters in the country but none of them are really big. The art of graffiti however, especially for political reasons, is pretty popular. How is the humor of your nation? -Anything goes and no area is off-limits. People will name their kids "Stalin" or "Hitler" just to get a few laughs. How do your citizens relax? What are their favourite past-times? -Going to the beach, binging TV, trying to use the internet, slight vandalism, complaining, sleeping, talking, hiking, dancing, singing, and ;). Sports, especially soccer (futbol), baseball, and basketball are actually quite near and dear to most Mauridivian's hearts. There's also been a rumor about a soccer-basketball mixed game being developed, but no word on it yet. How are the basic sentences on your country? Do you say "hello" and "goodbye" in a different way? -The entire language is basically just simplified Spanish with some unique characteristics mixed in. Mauridivians say "hello" and "goodbye" using two different proper words, like civilized people. cough Hawaii cough Hello = Hola Goodbye = Chao, Adios, Adio How much religious are your people? -There's several small religious communities in several areas of the country, there's some people that are animists, but overall Mauridivians are irreligious. How do the cities look like? How's the architeture, how are the streets, advertisings, is your city green and filled of life or filled with concrete and iron? -Mauridivian cities can really vary from place to place. From the classic german architecture used in Deuchlania to the Spanish colonial architecture of most coastal cities, and there's of course some tribal villages in the middle of nowhere. Even the most urban cities have plenty of trees (Either intentionally planted or just naturally occuring), and sometimes the state of disrepair can remind you of the original Jumanji movie. How's the daily routine of a person of your nation? -Wake up at 9 AM, complain about it, get dressed, go to work, get off of work sometime between 4 PM - 12 AM, waste the rest of the day, go to bed at 1 AM 'cause they decided to visit the discoteca for a few hours, sleep, repeat. How do your peoples look like? -Most people are mixed race hispanic, with a decent amount of whites, blacks, and natives thrown in. And add (or remove) whatever you want. -Mauridivians love to complain, but few actually want to act to fix anything. Not out of malice, rather out of laziness. -As a result of this laziness, the government is actually pretty efficient (as people don't want to deal with bureaucracy) and most cities don't like they're from the movie Jumanji. -Native rights are respected, however most real natives have actually disappeared and as such most of the "native" villages are made up of people trying to live a more "traditional" lifestyle. They're kind of like the American Amish. Those are just a few cultural facts about Mauridiviah. Edited March 18, 2018 by Mauridiviah (see edit history) 3 Link to comment

Mauridiviah
The Etymology of Mauridiviah. The name of Mauridiviah is a name that comes completely from the Horseman Age, at the end of which the original kingdom was founded. "Mauridiviah" can therefore be broken down into three distinct parts: "Mauri-", "divia", "h". "Mauri-" means "Maura + suffix", referencing the daughter of the first king of Mauridiviah. Its male counterpart of Mauro would be "Maure-" "divia" is a unique feature of Andesian. It means "land of", "clan of", "association of", etc. It is used to denote the ownership of something. As such, Mauridivia means "Land of Maura". However, there is another part to it. "h" at the end is a feature from the Horseman Age. Clans and tribes would often end their names with a silent "h" as a sign of status. For example: the Maracih and Sanguayanh tribes. The idea behind adding the "h" was simply to state that they were a tribe of their own, and no longer their old tribal association. Finally, Mauridiviah means "Land of Maura (This is the name of a tribe)" Using the International Phonetic Alphabet, my nation's name is pronounced as follows: [ maw ri 'ði βja ], otherwise written as [ m a u̯ ɾ i ð̞ i β̞ j a ] Hear it spoken here: Pronounce "Mauridiviah" with Google Translate's Help Edited July 3, 2018 by Mauridiviah Corrected letter size (see edit history) 4 Link to comment

Mauridiviah
Anatomy of the Republican Mauridivian Flag The flag of Mauridiviah is composed of three distinct parts: the horizontal tricolor, the star, and the Shield of the Republic. The tricolor is composed of three colors, from top to bottom: red, yellow, and blue. The red symbolizes the blood of the people who fought and died to create Mauridiviah and its antecedent states. The yellow represents the wealth of the nation, not just material, but intellectual, cultural, emotional, etc. The blue represents the ocean that has helped Mauridiviah throught its history, and from which the first colonists came from. It can also represent the sky and fair weather of the nation, thought this symbolism is more archaic as it's from the kingdom's flag with the noticeable light and more neutral blue, while this darker blue more resembles the ocean's color than it does the sky's. The order of the colors represents their importance to the nation, with the top being the most important and the bottom being the least. The star represents the unity of the people of Mauridiviah, with 5 tips representing the original four departments that declared indepedence from Iverica plus the new nation that is Mauridiviah. The color white symbolizes the purity of spirit of the nation and its central position represents the central position that the history of Mauridiviah takes to handling national matters of importance. The Shield of the Republic was added to the flag after the Declaration of Republicanism in 1988. The shield itself represents the willingness of every citizen to lay down their lives in preservation of the Republic, however according to the monarchist interpretation it represents the willingess of every citizen to lay down their lives in preservation of Democracy. The equilateral cross is a symbol of equality of every Mauridivian within the republic. The colors transfer over from the tricolor to the shield, except of course for the black which outlines the shield. Its dimensions are meant to be as convenient as possible to use abroad and domestically. This is the flag of the Most Serene Kingdom of Mauridiviah, and ever since 2018 has been the flag of Mauridiviah. It's symbolism is pretty similar to the "Republican" flag's. This one however only has two parts: the tricolor and the star. It can also represent the sky and fair weather of the nation. The order of the colors represents their importance to the nation, with the top being the most important and the bottom being the least. Mauridiviah
Culture Add-On: Stances On Abortion: Abortion is cheaply and widely avaliable. It is not normally frowned upon, however it is also seen as a last resort after much consideration. Having an abortion after 23 weeks is not legal. Aboritons are provided through state-owned companies. Racism: No one in Mauridiviah sees color, nor cares. This means, in less american terms, that the race of someone is not a relevant factor in daily life. Drugs: They're legalized, taxed, and regulated. Most people see doing them as you would people smoking (thereabouts), however doing drugs in public is not allowed, only in private. Sexuality. (Polygamy, etc) We actually don't discriminate against polygamy and are cool with it. The media is, as you'd expect, pretty sexualized but what can you do when the problem is human nature itself? Homosexuality: The gays are widely accepted. Other Religions: Most people are not religious, they focus more on living their lives rather than preparing to live an afterlife. Most other religions are tolerated unless they are intolerant, at which point they are ruthlessly attacked. An example of this is the Emperor's Light being the butt of many jokes. Animal testing: We have it. We don't like it, but it's the only way we'll get anywhere. Human Rights: Inalienable rights are enshrined in the constitution and society. Genetic Research: Allowed with some common sense regulation. Euthanasia: Allowed and government-funded, it's seen as a last resort and requires the approval of at least 2 doctors and 1 psychologist. Eugenics: Banned. Divorce: Allowed for both straight/gay and polyamorous marriages, to be settled fairly and equitably in and out of a legal court. As marriage is seen as more of a government than a religious thing, and since the only laws of the land are only those of Mauridiviah which apply to all, religios rulings and marriages under the eyes of the law and most of society are null and void and cannot have any kind of physical repercussions. Contraception: Allowed with free, state-funded distribution centers to allow for family planning. Edited May 7, 2018 by Mauridiviah Added a few more categories (see edit history) 4 Link to comment
Mauridiviah
The Entire History of Mauridiviah Arrival of Humans and the Hunter-Gatherers (60,000/40,000 to 5,000 Years Ago) It is still disputed in the archaeologist community when exactly humans first came to inhabit the Madrian Hinterlands, however most scholars would place the exact date somewhere between roughly 60,000 and 40,000 years ago. These early humans would've been typical Alharun hunter-gatherers, descendants of the hunter-gatherers who had long ago crossed from Europa into Argis. The lives of these hunter-gatherers would've been challenging, as the tropical climate would've proved very difficult to move through or live in, due to the thick jungle that covers most of the Hinterlands, as well as the wide variety of deadly plants, diseases, and animals. Many of them would've likely become coastal fishers with a small minority of them surviving in the in the hinterlands proper. These inland dwellers are the distant ancestors of some modern Mauridivian aboriginals. The population of humans during this period of early humans is estimated to have never exceeded 25,000 persons. Prehistory (3,000 BCE to 500 BCE) At around 3,000 BCE the Agricultural Revolution finally came to the isolated hinterlands, leading to the establishment of the first semi-sedentary cultures and proto-cities. We know very little of this time, however the city of Choroni is thought to have been founded during this time period. Pre-Europan Contact (500 BCE to 1680 CE)Several different, mostly tribal cultures developed in the hinterlands thanks to the introduction of widespread agriculture. Little is known of the tribes before Iverican contact, however native oral tales tell of an advanced fishing culture who's descendants are likely the Nari tribe. The Nari are the largest and most well-known tribe in the hinterlands, and circa 1650 CE it is thought that they could be found in coastlines from Manamana Bay to the Cashari Peninsula. They were excellent sailors, and there's evidence of contact between them and ancient Selayar. Their diets consisted mainly of fish and maize, with the boar being considered holy and therefore not eaten nor hunted. Thanks to early scholarly efforts and a large number of living descendants, the Nari language and culture has been well-preserved. As to tribes which are more inland, very little is known about them before contact and their cultures have mostly disappeared. However, we do know of an advanced culture that lived along the Ayacuco River in the south of the hinterlands. They farmed maize and other crops (notably sugar cane and cocoa) and built great dirt pyramids. Some of these still stand today as earth mounds. As so little is known about them, they're usually referred to as the "Ayacuco River Culture" The few uncontacted jungle tribes in Mauridiviah trace their origins to this period. Before contact with Europan diseases, the population is estimated to have been as high as 2 million people. Contact with Ivericans (1680-1690) Despite the fact that Aloorians (the ancestors of Variota, Saale, and Bergistan) had arrived to the eastern shores of Alharu in the 14th century, the western side of Alharu remained isolated from the Europan goods, people, and chiefly diseases. This is mainly due to the fact that trade routes rarely extended that far and the significant lack of technology and organization in the western part of Alharu, with only the civilizations of Cashar and Kaitaine being well established at the time. This would all be upset by the arrival of a plucky band of migrants from Europa. Far across the Adlantic, in the lands of the Iberic Empire, trouble was brewing. After a bloody invasion by the Mahdan Caliphate, a people that had been conscripted to death and radicalized by agitators rose up in open revolt against the Imperial Crown. After many massacres provoked by ethnic hatred and a long civil war, the last of the people loyal to the crown fled to the nearby Pirilao. These were families from all over the former Iberic Empire that opposed the deposition of the crown and the radical stances of the revolutionaries, as well families simply fleeing the violence. However, at Pirilao this group of refugees was betrayed and they were forced to undertake a difficult voyage that would take decades, now known as the "Gran Viatge" in Iverican and "Gran Viaje" in Andesian. This journey came to an end for many after the discovery of Iverica. However, it was not the end for everyone. Although all of the travelers (after fighting off the natives) did settle on the Iverican mainland, not all of them were satisfied with the lands that they had encountered. Several bold explorers continued to sail the coasts south hoping to find wealth and never-before seen cultures. Many merchants also sought to establish trade routes with the peoples of Alharu. Between 1680 and 1690, these traders and explorers sailed up and down the western coasts of Alharu making contact with many of the peoples there including the Nari. At first relations were pretty good between the Nari and these Iverican newcomers. They often exchanged gifts and traded, however then things took a turn for the worse. These Iverican explorers and merchants had brought diseases that the immune systems of the natives had never encountered. These diseases quickly spread like wildfire, but not everybody was hit the same. The civilizations of Kaitaine and Cashar were isolated, organized and knowledgable enough to isolate the sick from the healthy and limit the damage from these new diseases. However, many other native Alharun tribes, including the Nari, were not so lucky. It is said that they were octomated, as eight in every ten of them died. After this deadly contact, the population of the Madrian Hinterlands is estimated to have been no more than 400,000. Conquest and Colonization (1690-1752) The Nari were not the only ones who were suffering during this time, however. The newly arrived Ivericans quickly found themselves unable to farm enough food quickly or well enough to feed themselves and a famine ensued. This famine killed many and made the leadership of the newly founded Second Republic of Iverica that one calamity could wipe them off the face of the Eurth. Wanting to avoid this, they decided to sponsor an initiave to colonize a second new homeland for their people that would allow for their culture to survive if anything were to happen to Iverica. A great many possible locations were presented, but only one caught the eye of the Primo of Iverica: a mostly flat region of fertile lands, surrounded by natural barriers and tucked away at the end of a bay. It is said that when the Primo askedthe explorer who had visited those lands to described them, he described them as the "Most serene place in the whole of the world". With that, the place was chosen and many people signed up to be colonists to this brave new land, declaring this second new homeland an extension of the Gran Viatge. The first boat of plucky settlers set sail on May 5th, 1690 from Porto Altaria and landed on a beach not too far from modern-day Concepción on June 16th, 1690. The land these settlers found however was anything but serene. It was hot and full of mosquitos and agressive natives. Finding no land suitable for farming near the beach, the settlers went inward. They found a nice sport near a stream that reminded them of ancient descriptions of Sant Madrí. As such they named the city (and later the entire lands and colony) Madria. Concepción was founded soon thereafter, meant to serve as Madria's sea access. Colonization had begun. To be continued. Revolutionary War (1752-1756) To be decided. Most Serene Third Republic of Iverica (1756-1788) After the Revolutionary War ended, the former Captaincy General of Madria was in disarray. Cities and other local governments had substituted the colonial government during the war, but now that the Second Republic had been defeated, many moved to support a new central government. One located in the hinterlands, rather than far across the ocean. On October 2nd of 1756, as the final signing of a peace treaty approached, several Proceres began calling for the formation of a constituent assembly, chiefly Paolo Montenegroand Lazarillo de Madria. Starting on the 8th of October, several such assemblies began forming in the cities of San Juan, Madria, and Concepción. As to not cause confusion, Arturo Carabobo, then the leader of the Second Continental Army, declared that only the assembly gathering in Madria was legitimate and that the assembly would meet for the first time on November 12th. The assembly at Concepción willingly dissolved itself, but the assembly at San Juan (which at the time did have more representatives from all over the country than Madria) refused to dissolve. It met for the first time on October 20th. Augusto Bolívar arrived at the city and forced the the dissolution of the assembly on October 29th. With the so-called Pretender Assemblies out of the way, the assembly at Madria was able to meet, although due to bad weather the delegation from Caridad de los Moros arrived two days late, leading to the first meeting being held on November 15th. After meeting for 146 days, the assembly finally approved and signed a Constitution on April 10th. Elections were held from May 2nd to May 6th all over the nation, and the new government was inaugurated on May 20th. This was the beginning of the Most Serene Third Republic of Iverica. The government of the republic was adapted from that of the mother country, with some modifications made by the assembly. To be continued. Mauridiviah
Mauridivian Citizenship Laws Mauridiviah has a mix of jus sanguinis and jus soli in regards to citizenship. All persons born within Mauridivian territory are automatically citizens, and all persons born within Mauridivian embassies and consulates are also automatically citizens, as well as persons born within Mauridivian-registered vessels and aircraft or in Mauridivian waters and aerospace. This applies even to the children of foreign diplomats. If a child has at least one parent (biological or adoptive) that is a Mauridivian citizen, they are also automatically citizens. The spouse of a Mauridivian citizen can naturalize if their marriage lasted for at least 10 years. Persons with at least one grandparent who was a Mauridivian citizen can claim Mauridivian citizenship as long as they can prove it. Persons who have at least one great-granparent who was a Mauridivian citizen can claim citizenship as long as they can prove it and as long as they can pass a citizenship test. Persons who at least have either a great-great-grandparent or a great-great-great-grandparent who was a Mauridivian citizen (or a citizen of one of the previous states/tribes) qualify for citizenship as long as they can prove their ancestry and live in the nation for two years. These individuals are also required to pass a citizenship test. There are two great exceptions to these rules: the Madrian diaspora and the Indian diaspora. Madrians who left following the Reunification and their descendants will continue to qualify for automatic citizenship with no limit as to what generation the ancestor is from. Indian natives and their descendants displaced or deported by Mauridiviah's predecessor states all also qualify for automatic citizenship with no limit on the generation that the ancestor is from. Mauridiviah allows individuals to hold as many other citizenships as they like apart from Mauridivian citizenship. Mauridiviah will consider these individuals first and foremost as Mauridivians, however. A person may become a Mauridivian citizen if they immigrated legally after residing in the country for over 5 years, paid their taxes, and not been convicted of any crimes that required them to serve jail time. Persons who immigrated legally but have failed to meet these conditions will have to wait until these are met before being allowed to take the citizenship test. If a person fails the citizenship test, they will be allowed to retake it after a year if they're an adult and after six months if they are a minor. A person may also become a Mauridivian citizen if they have immigrated illegally into the country. As long as they have paid taxes, resided in the country for at least 15 years, and not gone to jail, they may take the citizenship test and become citizens. Persons who are stateless may be granted citizenship by the Senate of the Republic, the Department of State, and the President of the Republic. They may also be allowed to immigrate and naturalize upon application. Parents who aren't citizens of children that are will recieve special visas on a case by case basis. Anyone may renounce their Mauridivian citizenship at any time, but they may not regain their citizenship if they have not applied to do so within the next 10 years. Children and grandchildren of individuals who have renounced their citizenship and have no other ancestral/birth link to the nation are automatically considered citizens regardless, and the person's spouse may also claim citizenship after the 10 year period of marriage. Individuals with a generational connection farther than this will have to naturalize like anyone else unless one of their other ancestors claim citizenship. The Senate of the Republic has the power to remove citizenship from a person. In that case, unless the Senate explitcitly state it, the same laws will apply as to a person who renounced their citizenship, with the exception of the person or persons who lost their citizenship as a result of a decree of the Senate being unable to regain it unless they naturalize. The Mauridivian citizenship test confirms that the person requesting citizenship is at least somewhat proficient in Andesian, knows about the basic history of the country and about key historical figures, recognizes modern Mauridivian figures of importance, and understands the basics of Mauridivian law. Mauridiviah
Mauridivian Broadcasting Corporation's Greatest Movies and TV Shows Regreso al Futuro (Back to the future) The Back to the Future franchise is composed of three movies (Back to the Future Parts I-III) released throughout the late 1980s that proved to be the first hit movies that were totally funded by MBC grants. The movies follow the adventures of Martí de Volar and Doc Marron as they travel through time in their famous Tuk-Tuk. El Terminador (The Terminator) The Terminator franchise is composed of five movies which have been released of since the mid-1980s and were done in collaboration with several Argic film companies. The franchise itself actually takes place in Girkmand and predicts that Skynet will be the result of an international collaboration between the Sunset Sea Islands, Iverica, and Girkmand. Viaje a las Estrellas (Star Trek) The Star Trek franchise is composed of many TV shows and movies originially envisioned by Juan Raudenbaya. Although, because the MBC had only been recently founded and lacked much funding when Raudenbaya first pitched the idea, he only recieved enough money for the pilot of the original series. Luckily enough, the franchise would be picked up other outside networks which allowed it to continue. The MBC continues to give grants to the franchise to this day, as a section of the budget of the current installment of Star Trek: Discovery (Viaje a las Estrellas: Descubrimiento). The franchise takes place in its own universe that envisions a utopian space future for humanity. Los Muertos Vivientes (The Walking Dead) A modern day series now entering its tenth season, it follows several groups of survivors as they struggle against a worldwide zombie outbreak, traveling across Iverica. The series is currently among the largest recievers of MBC grants, although the show is now so costly that foreignfilm companies have had to pick up an increasing number of costs. The MBC is looking to phase out its involvement in the project following the most recent season's ratings within Mauridiviah. La Guerra de las Galaxias (Star Wars) This film franchise is currently composed of nine movies that have been partially funded by the MBC. It follows an original story set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far way. The franchise started too early for the MBC to have completely funded it, so like Star Trek its creator Jorge Luca was forced to ask foreign film companies for extra funding. The ninth movie is due to release in late 2019. 2088 This TV show that's currently entering its fourth season is set in an apocalyptic future that's a modern take on George Borwell's 1985. The plot follows a family living the Iberic Diaspora States (IDS), a totalitarian government formed of a union between all iberic and hispanic nations worldwide. The show has been greatly funded by the MBC with some funding coming from Iverican film companies. El Principe de Jordania (Prince of Jordan) This TV show is the MBC's newest hit series, set in the mythical land of Jordan amidst a bunch of religious wars. It follows Abu Baker Sadiq, the future King of Jordan, as he struggles to save his homeland from foreign invaders. The series premiered in 2016 and is currently wrapping up its third season. El Ministerio del Tiempo (The Ministry of Time) This TV show originally premiered in 2014, with the MBC being one of its main patrons. The show takes place in Mauridiviah most of the time, but they do travel abroad. The plot follows a team of time travellers who try to prevent nefarious forces (such as Gallambrian corporations) from changing the past to affect the future. Their method of time travel is unique as they use doors instead of a time machine or wormholes. The eries recently finished its fifth season. W.I.P. Mauridiviah
The Staircase of Rights Mauridivian law has a long-standing concept within it known as the "the staircase of rights". The basic idea is that rights and responsibilities should increase over time as a person ages rather than having a hard boundary where individuals suddenly find themselves having tons of rights and responsibilities. There's also ways for people who prove that they are mature enough to gain certain rights earlier than others. In this way, people are slowly eased into having more rights and responsibilities instead of obtaining them all at once. Here's the staircase as it currently exists: The Age of Consent and Romeo and Juliet Laws The age of consent and so-called "Romeo and Juliet" laws play a key role in the Staircase. The age of consent without restrictions is currently placed at 16. The age of marriage without restrictions is also placed at 16. Romeo and Juliet laws let individuals marry earlier and allow them to have legal sex earlier if they are of a similar age. Mauridiviah's Romeo and Juliet laws are as follows: Individuals who are 10 and under can legally have sex with each other so long as they consent and are within 3 and a half years of each other's ages. From 11 onwards, individuals can legally have sex with eachother as long as they are within 5 and a half years of each other's ages. The earliest two consenting individuals can marry (and with parental consent) is 14 years of age so long as the individual they are marrying is within two years of their age. Thus is the Staircase of Rights as it currently exists in Mauridiviah. 3 Link to comment
