[OOC] Adapton Expansion and Potential Colonialism.

Recommended Posts

I wanted to start a thread around this, just to get some input around the idea.ย

I wanted to run a RP around some Adapton expansionism, and what I would term "mild colonialism". Essentially I wanted to grab some land in the new continents, in an attempt by the Adapton government to try and gain control of some of the trade within the region. Or at least, make itself a local trade player.ย

My idea is to begin with a grab of some land far in the west. My first expansion will be to the small peninsula which I have attached below. The idea will be create a sort of Adapton version of Hong Kong. And then potential expansion else where. I suspect internationally, an older larger power grabbing land wouldn't be taken very lightly, which is somewhat a reaction I want to provoke. I'm looking to create a little bit of tension, sort of Old World vs New World kind of vibe. Withย a limited cold war element to it.ย

This could be expanded as other ideologies can be brought in, but the general theme will be that old Old Europan 'ideals' vs new Europan 'ideals'.ย

Adaptus values itself very highly, and for come context, is very much Greco-Roman in attitude, and culture. A culture and social idealism it values very highly, and any chance to spread that cultural ideal would be seen as a value to the state. So the chance to expand Adapton culture into the new continent would be highly desirably. Think of it like how early ancient Greek states colonised most of the Mediterranean. But obviously in a modern setting.ย

Is this something people would get on board with or is this something people would rather avoid?

@Adaptus Sounds fine to me so far, but what's really important is Papa @Orioni 's opinion. Seems like that strait will be full of city-states. Definitely interesting. Maybe the TechIntern could influence some Adaptons in that state... Anyhow, what would the reason be for you to colonise that faraway peninsula? A shipwreck? Claiming some rare resources? I think if you find a good reason for your presence in that area this could be an interesting development.

I was going to go with using it as a central hub in the area for resource grabbing. I just hadn't quite decided on what, most likely Oil in one of the near by sea's. Creating a semi-autonomous trade city state in the process. Involving your TechIntern could be an added element which might work well also.ย

Additional expansions would follow a similar reasoning. Resource grabbing in key areas.ย

In my honest opinion, it would make absolutely no sense for you to end up there. The first general area you had, more to the east, is something that seems far more realistic for you to settle at. It makes more sense for the blockade and such to expand slightly to the west than to move through my strait (not exactly mine but you get the point, I'm situated there), take over a partย and suddenly be settled hundreds of kilometers (EDIT: If not more is a bit exagerated, my guesstimation would be that it's about 500 kilometers further from your first area) away. Of course, this also depends on how you intend to play it but as an example, in almost all aspects it would make more sense for any place there to ask aid/assistance from local nations than from you as you're (almost) literally on the other side of the world.

Additionally, I'd rather see the region have more activity in other things such as culture, sports, economics and such than going towards a cold war, especially as there are enough interesting things that haven't been done yet. There's also the matter of the map around there still being relatively empty, so it might be best to wait until there are somewhat more players in play, give the general region there some time to mature. That being said, I'm of course just one voice and if it comes down to it, I'll roll with the punches.

Thanks Var.

I predominantly picked that location over the one further east due to it's seclusion, and I didn't want to be feel like I was sticking my toe into an area someone already had plans for in the future. The area I expand into isn't set in stone so I don't mind changing based on other peoples opinions.ย

I didn't want to create an out and out cold war. More a background sense of tension. The intension behind to add an extra dynamic going forward into other role-plays. It just adds another element to the proceedings. If people are against the idea. I can always approach my expansion from a more muted perspective. Based primarily around trade based expansion.ย

I think with @Sunset Sea Islands's proposed map changes, I'd rein this in quite heavily, and maybe take a small part of land, or a small island later down the line to fit with the Hong Kong idea I had, but that would be it. So long as no one objects. Obviously this would be much further down the line now, as the proposed map changes will take some time to RP out in Europa before moving into the new world.ย

Something more akin to the concessions of 19th/early 20th Century China?

Since future neighbours get a say in accepting an expansion like this (or not), the voices of @Variotaย and @Girkmandย count in this debate. Myself, I think this area is rather far from the Adapton homeland. If you had colonised that bit, it would have happened 100 years ago at least. So that would call for a historic RP.

On the other side, @Adaptus , I think you already mentioned being content with expanding locally with the debate on locking down the open areas in Europa.

I'm more than happy to put this away with the current plans for the Occident.ย

Could revisit this in a limited capacity as a future RP storyline. But for now, I'll put any expansion outside of the Occident on indefinite hold for the foreseeable future.ย
