Kahaddum
Boris Yeltsin, who played a key role in the Soviet Union's demise and became Russia's first president, has died aged 76, the Kremlin says. BBC article Link to comment
Kotsalvat
Sorry, but I couldnt stand the guy. In ending the USSR, he caused the loss of one of the worlds greatest ever nations. The people lost their economic security and many were plunged into poverty. In his presidency he could have fixed it all, but he just turned to drink while corruption siphoned money away from social welfare and economic growth. He sold off most of the Russian governments greatest assets for absolutely nothing. He was useless. Link to comment

I think Gorbachev had a bigger share on the blame, but there's no denying that Ieltsin could have done way better for such a great nation. From what I see, not even the TV is sorry for the guy. Suverina
<snip> What sort of damn propaganda have you listened to? Without Yeltsin the Sovjetunion would have a cruel dictatorship run by the military instead. Link to comment
Kahaddum
There were good and bad parts to Yeltsin's career. He did make sure Gorbachev's work to democratize Russia continued, standing up to the KGB and the military. On the other hand, his mismanagement caused the collapse of the ruble and destroyed people's life savings. And he became an erratic, power-hungry autocrat. Link to comment

Nan Gorgwaith
Seriously, how many "members" of the Soviet Union really wanted to be part of it by choice? It is good that it is gone, as well as the old drunk who had good ideas, poorly executed. Link to comment
Vruechten
I'm surprised Yetlsin lived as long as he did, quite frankly. He was, after all, a heavy drinker throughout much of his life. As a leader, I thought he had some good ideas but he seemed to be a bit unstable. Link to comment
