The US shouldn't be engaging in wars, which are really ploys for resource acquisition and self-reward.

Entertaining the idea that the draft makes things fair is ludicrous, since it implies acquiescence to the ideology that war is a necessity.

The American flag has been stained with the blood of good, honest, hardworking men and women, many of whom were still in their late teens. I support the 'anti-flag' concept because I've seen alot of people use it as a tool of suppressing dissent

You know, I figured that I would be honored hero when I come back from America. I saw alot of people at the airport in Georgia when I come back from Iraq, flags waving...but there was sadness in their eyes, almost a desperation.

I've been trying to find these 30-something-percent supporters of Bush that are still out there, but no luck yet. In the meantime, I'm going to keep asking people what they think of what's going on with present issues and post their comments here.

SAMS, I see that you are obviously upset with the American government. I am a patriot too. A loyalist, nationalist and patriot. Bush has upset me as well, just now allowing public schools to segregate by sex has really ticked me off. But despite all this, I still do not think there is a government better than ours. Perhaps there is, but there is no other one I would rather live under. Besides maybe Israel, I like Israel.

Every generation of this nation have had their problems (The Revolution, Civil War, Depression, WW2, Cold War....) and now it is our turn. We just have to get through it and keep our Empire in the race, or perish like all the other Empires did.

I like the quotes, MS. Keep them coming. It is nice to know the opinions of others.

I do not believe America to be an empire. If it is, it is a poor one. I think there is a difference between a superpower and an empire. Superpowers have vast influence on the world stage, whereas empire directly control colonial possessions or conquered provinces. I suppose one could argue that all of the US was conquered at some point and the native people massacred to the point of near extinction, but I still do not think that America is an empire.

And all empires crumble and fade in the end. From Rome to Britain, empires do not last forever. The United States, due to its overuse of force and meddling in the affairs of foreign powers, has caused a massive backlash against itself. Our latest president has probably helped to drive the stake into America's heart as far as international credability goes. Angry powers trampled by the US will seek out new rising powers (China, perhaps Iran too) to rally behind and suddenly America will find all her friends have abandoned her.

If America is to remain a respected power or country, it needs to stop bullying the world around and regain some much needed credibility. The US needs to show the world they're willing to compromise. Bush wants everything to go exactly his way and it cost the Republicans Congress. People DO NOT respond well to being pushed around. We need to be far more subtle and diplomatic. Most importantly, the United States needs to start setting an example instead of being hypocritical. This whole "do as I say, not as I do," thing has got to end. US wants to be against torture? Don't torture! US wants to be against totalitarianism? Don't align with totalitarian states and let democracy run its course EVEN IF it is not in the best interests of the US. US wants nations to listen to UN resolutions? Well, the US better start listening to the UN itself...

This generation's great challenge I think will be to not succumb to fear. Bush wants us to live in fear so the people can be easily talked into war. With that fear comes a whole other mess of things. People now hate Arabic people and Islam. Airport security has gone INSANE. The Patriot and Military Commissions Acts have both passed. Walls are going up along the border. Next thing you know, they'll have SWAT teams constantly guarding the Statue of Liberty.

"Do not worry, Lady Liberty, we'll keep you safe! You just put that torch of yours out so the terrorists can't see you, ok? It is for your own good. You don't want to die, do you?"

Anyway, I think the US is far from becoming some awful racist police state, HOWEVER, the people should be very watchful of government as America seems to be a little less free as time moves on. Radical change can sneak up on you, you know? If we're not careful, we could wake up in 30 years and wondered what happened to liberty. The risk is always there.

Haha, Ide.

Glad to see you're still around.

Yeah, I was talking to a girlfriend of mine (otherwise known as a 'friend with benefits') in Waco about a couple of weeks ago when I was on TDY at Fort Sam Houston.

You know, I just think that Bush needs to realize that when you do rude and impolite things all the time, people ain't gonna take you seriously as a politician and won't respect you, like that neck rub thing with that German lady.

Miiros, America is much as an Empire as the Romans were. Most of our nation, if not all of it, is a conquered territory if you think about it. Native people massacred to the point of extinction...isn't that what Empires do? The Mongols?

Plus, your definition of Empire is too narrow minded in my opinion.
