Akiiryu
1900s history  OOC:  IF you want a basic guide think of a cross between Germany and Japan. Akiiryu is a bold, expansionistic country that has been recently unified under strong, dictatorial federal government that wants its place in the sun. It is heavily industrialised and has strong military (in all senses of the word - ie the military is a strong social and political player as well as being well armed and trained). Akiiryu is willing to learn from its neighbours and is greedily absorbing other countries technological innovations while creating many of its own.  Fair skined, the people are prodominantly blond or red haired (although brown is not uncommon), they are also are heavily tattooed on their faces and bodies (think NZL Maori). The tattoos indicate clan and family affilations as well as marks of honour. Both men and women wear their hair long.  Culturally Akiiryans can be powder kegs, their strong sense of honour (which is a bit skewed according to other people's value systems) mean they can be exceedingly polite to a person one second and then remove the person's head the next because they feel they have been insulted. All adult males carry daggers.  The military , unlike many others, has learnt a lot from recent conflicts using modern weapons and as quietly re-worked many of its tactics to take into account the power of machine-guns, repeating rifles and quick firing artillery (This is not godmoding, a number of military men did realise the ultimate realities of modern warfare before the start of WWI ((especially after the Boer War and the Russo-Japanese War)), but were over ruled by more conservative members of the establishment. In Akiiryu the reformers won out).  The Navy is Akiiryu's new born pride and joy. While comparatively small (compare to say BN) its growing. Moreover, the majority of its ships are cutting edge thanks to a huge investment in this military arm in the last few years. Akiiryu also employs merchant raiders (naval vessels disguised as civilian ships) and is working on a submarine programme.  Note: Navies at this time ran on coal and were relatively limited in their operational sweep by the need to refuel. Players should consider this when sending their navies out: if you don't have coaling stations along the way you're gunna run out of fuel quick! Merchant raiders generally worked on a mix of sail and coal. Sailing for the majority of the time and only switching to coal to attack or flee.    Questions?  NOTE I have edited my orginal post. Akiiryu
For those who are interested, the following is a list of contemporary R.A.N. ships that have been named in rps. It should not be treated as exhaustive as most classes can be considered to have many more vessels than those mentioned. I have also indicated where other ships in a class have been mentioned without being named. Basically I just want to give you guys something to play with, and to keep a running record.  The R.A.N. remains relatively small for a nation with the size and military budget of the SPA. However, with that said, Akiiryan military planners and designers go for quality over quantity (and have done since the 1900s) and as such the R.A.N. is equiped with some of the most technologically advanced and heavily armed/armoured ships in Europa. This means the R.A.N. military capabilities are far beyond most navies of similar and, in most cases, larger size. I would like to point out that, unlike many navies, the R.A.N. still armours its ships (I'm following the Soviets here).  The R.A.N. has three projection fleets (North, South and Central) and one home fleet. The home fleet is also supplemented by well equiped and trained coast guard.   Prince Class Super Aircraft Carrier P'Thayaric P'Theodanaric P'Thannocicu   Spear Class Escort Carrier  Spear Taiha Yari  More being built  Titan class battleship Oceanus Tethys Themis Prometheus Atlas  Note that the Themis, Prometheus and Atlas are bigger than their two sister ships, and as such might fairly be called an Improved Titan Class, although such a designation has not been given to them the R.A.N.  No others to be built at this time.   Hero Class Heavy Guided Missile Cruiser Maui Beowulf Ragnar Perseus Odysseus Eomer Given the size and expense of these vessels (which might well be called battleships in many other countries) there is probably only one to four more of them.  Skyweb Class Air Defense Cruiser None named  Shield Maiden Class Destroyer  Brynhilda Eowyn Atalanta Hippolyta   Sea Hound Class Anti-Submarine Destroyer Hound Inu Chien  Kraken Class SSBNs Jormungandr Tiamat Taniwha Scylla  Whale Class Cargo Submarine (same basic hull as a Kraken, but designed to be a cargo/transportation vessel. 15,000 ton cargo capacity)  None named.  Wraith Class Attack Submarine Shadow Specter Ghost Wraith  Mercy Class Hospital Ship Iceberg Mercy Friendship   Sea Sprinter Class Light Cruiser Marlin Sail Fish Sword Fish Flying Fish  More being built.  Sea Raptor Fast Attack Cruiser Hawk Eagle Tlanuwa  More being built.  Piranha Class corvette Speed: 40+ Knots Crew: 43 Armament: 1x76 mm Super Rapid Multirole gun 8xSSM 8xAAM 4x400mm torpedoes tubes (12 torpedoes) Counter measure launchers.  None named  Huscarl Class Patrol boat Speed: 60+knots on calm sea (rough 45+ knots) Crew: 16 Armament: 8x SSM 1x76 mm Super Rapid Multirole gun 4xAAM 12.7mm MG  None named Link to comment

Akiiryu
Medieval Notes. C.1000AD  The majority of Akiiryans at this time are horse nomads. Think heavily tattooed Riders of Rohan and you get the drift. The tattoos, especially the facial ones, indicate clan, ancestry, social rank, and record important deeds do by their bearer. Think along the lines of Maori Ta Moko (although they are artistically more Scythian in character). They are generally nomadic, although there are some small towns and villages, especially on the coasts and in the mountains. Ethnicity wise, think Turkic  Some of the clans near the sea are highly skilled sailors using boats similar to Viking long ships. Most coastal clans, and the majority of mountain/hill clans, fight on foot rather than on horses.  The Akiiryan fighting style could fairly be called hit and run. Ambush and lightening raids are preferred battle tactics, although if necessary Akiiryans will fight set piece battles. In such instances Parthian tactics are common for the horse clans.  Missile weapons are favoured (composite bows), although some of the hill tribes use light javelins with spear throwers. The sea clans use throwing axes (franciscas) as well as bows. Hand to hand weapons include long swords, axes and spears. The hill and mountian clans are also employ short board bladed thrusting spears . The sea clans favour axes and are known to use large two handed battle axes (think Viking axes here). All men and women wear daggers (as is to be expected) and points of honour are generally decided with these weapons.  Armour is generally light. Akiiryan warriors prefer speed and manoeuvrability over the extra protection heavy armour provides. Cured boar hide (which is both tough and light) is the general rule, although some richer warriors (and chieftans' body guards) wear chain or brigandine. Shields, when used, tend to be small and round. By 1300 chain, brigandine and scale is far more common, although many still wear boar hide. Speed is the key.  There is no prince at this time and the clans are often at war with each other. That said a foreign threat would likely unite them - at least for a short while. Link to comment

Akiiryu
Language  There are two main languages in Akiiryu - High Akiiryan and Low Akiiryan (which can further be broken down in to Northern, Central and Southern variations - distinguishable by accent and minor differences in vocab). High Akiiryan is the language of government, academia, religion, "high" literature/cultural and the court. All Akiiryans understand High Akiiryan, but few would use it in day to day life. Low Akiiryan is the language of very day use.  High Akiiryan  Standardisation Highly Formal: the language has a fixed form, grammer and spelling set by a public body.  Intonation Intonational: (such as English, tone conveys context eg making it a question)  Accent Formal: emphasised syllables in a word are fixed and affect meaning (eg greek)  Syntax Analytic: (uses word order to fix meaning and words are individual units eg English)  Grammar Prescriptive: very formal with a defined correct form, writing based  Complexity Complex: verbs change, complex tense formation (eg German)  Written Form Alphabet, much like the Roman Alphabet but including characters for compound sounds (Th, Sh and Ss, for example).  Low Akiiryan  Standardisation Semi Formal: the language has a fixed form, grammer and spelling set by a public body but there are regional spoken variations and dialects  Intonation Intonational: (such as English, tone conveys context eg making it a question)  Accent Informal: emphasised syllables are by convention but may change to suit rhythm or dialect(eg English)  Syntax Analytic: (uses word order to fix meaning and words are individual units eg English)  Grammar Descriptive: more informal and speech based  Complexity Complex: verbs change, complex tense formation (eg German)  Written Form Alphabet, much like the Roman Alphabet but including characters for compound sounds (Th, Sh and Ss, for example). Akiiryu
Religion  God View [olytheitic ? Multiple gods exists, each of roughly the same importance. One chief God (the Stag). The Beast (kinda like the devil) is considered a god, despite being the symbol of evil.  Spiritual Aim Ethical and moral standards are their own reward, regardless of the possibility of heavenly rewards or punishment.  Devotion Required Daily (for Clergy) Monthly (for lay people) The Akiiryan's believe in and respect the Gods, but the relationship between the Gods and their worshippers is not seen to require constant acknowledgement through worship. Cle   Organization Structure Rigid hierarchy answerable to a central authority [Arch-Priests of each god, headed by Arch-Preist of the Stag] the minimal decision making at lower levels.  Liturgical Formality ]Rituals are combined with an open teaching policy.   Missionary Fervor Willing to convert any person, although it is doubted non-Akiiryans are blest with the characteristics that the Gods expect in their worshippers. Akiiryu
Â Okay, so their are no numbers or anything (I don't seem to be able to do that without screwing things up...) and had to JPEG it. The Red dot is Nimarci. The purple in the sea in the south is a natural gas field (to replace the oil fields that Akiiryu had on the old map), the black dots being drilling platforms. The blue dot in the north is the "weather" station mentioned in my news casts. Â Note the yellow dots only indicate large cities and not, necessarily, military vbases or small towns villages.
