Report: Synapse System has reduced Sunset City traffic jams by 15%, expansion imminent

Ever since Synapse's introduction in mid 2017, the artificial intelligence has not only been analysing surveillance footage and optimising crime prevention strategies, but has also kept track of all approximately 30 million motor vehicles in the Greater Sunset City Metropolitan Area. Over the course of the last one and a half years, traffic congestion went down by 15%. Soon, it will make commuting all over the nation a breeze.

Synapse's thousands of eyes constantly analyse live traffic data, both from GPS tags and video feeds to generate alternative routes to reduce travel times. Furthermore, it can alarm authorities in emergency situations like accidents or crimes.

Just looking at the raw amount of it generated by citizens of the Sunset Sea Islands over the course of one day, one might think that humans exhale data instead of carbon dioxide. Ever sice the beginning of the digital age, data generation has experienced exponential growth. This new resource is put to good use by the engineers behind the Synapse System. Aside from reducing crime to a mere memory throughout the Radiant Republic, the evaluation of our data makes many other aspects of our daily lives more expedient.

One of the most significant effects of the Synapse System is the reduction of traffic jams by monitoring all motor vehicles in Sunset City, and soon in the entirety of the nation. Synapse has mastered the art of controlling the flow of cars, motorcycles and trucks by autonomously changing traffic lights, by planning efficient detours and by sending suggestions for faster routes directly to the individual cars.

Now, after sufficient proof exists, that the Synapse System improved traffic circulation in Sunset City, it's authority will be expanded to the rest of the Radiant Republic. The growth of Synapse simultaneously means that the improvements in security and quality of life will finally also be coming to the rural regions of the nation. However, since digital infrastructure in the countryside is lacking in comparison to the urban centres, major investments are neccessary in these fields.

In cooperation with the government of the Radiant Republic of the Sunset Sea Islands, Elegy Megacorporation has rolled out a program to further Synapse's horizon throughout the whole nation by installing thousands of state-of-the-art surveillance cameras. Since the efficiency of computer vision would decrease dramatically in correlation with the distance with the central Synapse Supercomputer in the capital, regional AI "cores" will be installed in more remote areas of the nation. The exact location of these supercomputers is and will be highly restricted, as public knowledge about these vital nodes would pose a tremendeous security issue.

Elegy Megacorporation provides both the hard- and the software for the Synapse System. The expansion will be accompanied by the creation of thousands of new jobs throughout the Radiant Republic, applying is always possible.

Warehouse drone damages Capsaicin tank, 30 hospitalised

Aside from producing and distributing the nation's most popular smartphone, the ElePhone, Elegy Megacorporation also runs one of the largest online shopping services of the world. Over one hundred thousand robots and drones are increasing the efficiency of this logistical masterpiece on a daily basis. Well, that is unless they're not spraying human employees with pepper spray.

An army of thousands of robot-vaccum-like robots transport soon-to-be-shipped goods from shelves to logistical terminals within Elegy's warehouses. Even though other robots load them up, human labour is still essential for the company.

Earlier today, an industrial tobot accidentally tore open a can of wildlife repellant in a warehouse of Elegy Megacorp's online shopping service EleExpress on the outskirts of Sunset City. The aerosol immediately rushed out of the canister and harmed over two dozen human employees, who, in contrast to cold-harted and iron-skinned machines, do mind if you douse them in pepper spray.

The workers have quickly been brought to nearby hospitals and compensated for their pain by Elegy, who values its employees and cares about their security. According to the doctors, all thirty individuals are out of critical condition and will be released over the course of tomorrow. Some less affected workers were treated at the scene. Once the aerosol was filtered out of the warehouse air, work resumed as usual. The lost time, however, might lead to some transportation delays, Elegy speakers said.

To prevent such incidents causing delays in the future, Elegy Megacorporation is thinking about how to reduce human involvement in their fulfillment centres even more. In theory, a minimal supervisory team of human overseers should suffice to keep a fully automated warehouse running.

The surrounding residential area was not put in any form of danger, although the sound of fire engines and ambulances might have disturbed their sleep. The recipient of the wildlife repellant has been compensated for the loss of his order and the producer advised to reinforce the structural integrity of his products.

Well, they've given up on cooling you, and focussed on becoming cooler themselves. Persistence Of Vision Displays have come a long way, and they're epic.

Looking at a single POV fan can already be mind-boggling. I cannot imagine how hard it is to program a strip of LEDs to blink in such a fashion that they project a miniature clock when spun really fast. Well, it turns out that the people who are smart enough to do stuff like that can do even more. Now, in late 2018, we're at the point where you can have grids the size of billboards projecting full-colour 3D video.

Standing in front of one of these makes your jaw drop. At first I thought that the grid of black tubes supporting the fans would break the immersion, but trust me, as soon as the lights start spinning, you're in a whole different world. Rotating images of cars, rings, basically whatever you can model in 3D on a computer, suddenly levitate in mid-air.

Nevertheless, a couple of aspects still need to be worked on, for example the, already quite impressive, viewing angle stability. But as interest in POV displays rises, so does funding. Therefore, improvements are only a question of time.

Holy smokes, we're really living in the future.

Although POV displays are not entirely affordable, not to mention ten by twenty meter arrays of them, some advertisers are already investing in the new technology. Some shops in the tech-y districts of Sunset City have already installed POV displays over their entrances, attracting the gazes of pedestrians. As the technology gets more and more popular, applications in both large scales, such as facade-spanning holographic displays, and in small scales, such as vending machines, suddenly are within the realm of possibility.

To everyone, who thought that we'd never have levitating, holographic displays like the one's we've seen in the movies, you're wrong. The future is now.

They might not be as impressive as the huge mechs you've seen on TV, but they're still quite impressive in their own way. Exoskeletons have begun to improve working conditions for Tesura employees.

As a journalist, I spend a lot of time sitting in front of my monitor and, I admit it, my posture isn't the best. There are better things to do for your back than slouching on your office chair. But even I can imagine how physically straining it must be to work full-time in a car manufactoring plant, especially if your screwing around on the underside of a car suspended above your head.

Since Tesura's employees are its most valuable resource, the company has invested in motorised exoskeleton vests, that provide additional support for the shoulders of the hard workers. Especially the longest-serving employees in Tesura's ranks receive priority when it comes to the supportive structures. Once you lift your arms over your head, you basically don't have to use your muscles anymore, the vest holds your arms up there all by itself.

Long-term studies have shown shoulder injuries to be the most common medical condition occuring in car manufactories, and also the ones that take the longest to heal. The slow but steady implementation of exoskeletons improves worker safety significantly.

It remains to be seen, how the future of exoskeletons will develop and whether or not it will spread to other brances of the industry as well. Further potential applications include SDF and police use.

Elegy has been in talks with Tesura about potentially acquiring the rights to the electric car company.

A mere few years ago, drones were nothing but a hobby. Oh, how times have changed. Now, the technology has sufficiently improved to make short and middle range deliveries by drone possible.

Although we're far from seeing swarms of EleExpress drones migrating over the skies of the Radiant Republic, the first step to a future of autonomous delivery has long been done. For the longest time, transport companies were on the lookout for new and revolutionary ways of minimising delivery times and expenses by any means possible. Drones seem to be the solution they were looking for.

As a proof of concept, EleCorp has sent a delivery drone across Liberty Island and delivered a 15kg package to Porto Libertad. According to the manufacturers, the drone is able to carry weights of up to 50kg, however, the range drops significantly as the carried weight increases.

Nevertheless, as the need for new means of transportation increases and companies become more and more dependent on autonomous drones, funding in this area is expected to increase over the next few years.

The government of the Radiant Republic of the Sunset Sea Islands is currently also debating the implementation of surveillance drones throughout cities hooked up to the Synapse System, to improve the coverage of its's live video feeds. Autonomously moving cameras could also be used to punctually provide additional viewing angles, should the need arise.

And here I thought all of those kids playing first person shooter games on their computers and consoles would never actually have any skills to use in real life. Well, I was wrong. The SSISDF began to use VR setups to prepare their operatives for dangerous situations.

When the SSISDF was reintroduced after decades of not having any form of army, reactions throughout the Sunset Sea Islands were mixed at best and outraged at worst. Now, however, the tides have turned. Ever since the '17 Sorrows woke our nation from its slumber, the number of applicants for service have increased, even though they are still relatively low.

Even though now, more than one year after the worst terrorist attack of the nation's history, things seem to have calmed down again, the SSISDF has been training hard to prepare for situations of similar magnitude.

By training for both long-range and close quarter combat, as well as infiltration missions in virtual reality, the SSISDF is doing its part in guaranteeing the safety and security of every single citizen of the Radiant Republic of the Sunset Sea Islands.

So, if you think that your kid might be spending too much time in the computer-generated reality behind some clunky goggles, think about the fact that it might one day be preventing a bad guy from hurting you in real life. The future of our nation might be in their hands.

Bionic boots conquer Solitude Island

Now this is is a physical activity that could actually make me leave the comfort of my home for an afternoon. A group of teenagers recently began uploading self-made videos to the internet showing them exploring the wastes of Solitude Islands with bionic boots, spring-loaded foolware that increases running speeds and jump heights significantly.

It looks like a scene straight outta a video game. A horde of young people wearing sci-fy-looking footware acrobatically jumping over boulders, crossing crevices and racing across vast, open areas. A couple of camera drones follow them as they make their way through the surroundings of Tenma. The videos, which they upload to VOD streaming services, reach an audience of millions.

We've asked "B10N1C_800TZ", the owner of the channel, for a comment about why this phenomenon is suddenly rising in popularity. "Well, for one, in the past, Solitude Island has only been that rock in the sea that's only inhabited by miners and a couple of rocket scientists. Now, however, as more and more people move here and Tenma continues to prosper in the wastes, it was only a question of time until people actually wanted to explore the place they're living in. I found these boots online and just decided to take them for a spin and upload the footage to the web. A couple of people saw the videos and soon a couple of viewers from Tenma bought their own boots and began accompaniying me on my runs. Now, people even come from the other ends of the country to run with us. The engagement is really something.
Oh, and also, it just looks really cool."

In a similar fashion, freerunning and parcour have been soaring in popularity in the urban sprawls of the Greater Sunset City Metropolitan Area. Both on- and offline warehouses report rising sales in running equipment, including bionic boots. A pair of bionic boots cost about 100-200 SSI Sols.

Over the last few months, several companies from all over the world have applied for a place within the Morheim Trade & Industry Zone. However, it has taken Elegy Megacorporation some time to decide on a viable concept for their presence in the soon-to-be-opened zone.

The Elegy Institute for Statistics and Opinion Research has been specially founded for Elegy's expansion into the Morhemian market. Whilst the megacorp prefers to maintain its most lucrative branches within the borders of the Radiant Republic of the Sunset Sea Islands, the Morhemian subsidiary might prove to be a valuable expansion of Elegy's sample size.

Soon, the EISOR will conduct opinion polls throughout southern Argis, something they need a lot of Morhemian locals for. Elegy calculates that this branch office will create jobs for up to 1000 Morhemians, as well as around 50 Sunset Sea Islandians, mostly in supervisory positions.

Furthermore, EISOR plans on conducting medical studies, for example testing new medicine on volunteers, which will be put under medical surveillance and financially compensated for their initiative.

Applications, both for citizens of the Queendom and the Radiant Republic, are now open.

Yesterday, the Morhemian Crown Cronicles reported on biotech company Zenith Data Systems announcing a cooperation with the military to test subdermal implants for navigation purposes. What might look creepy now might quickly turn into a really useful gadget.

The future is coming and it's telling you where to go using just five subdermal LEDs implanted in a thirty minute procedure.

Ever got tired of checking your phone every few minutes when in a new town? Does looking at a navigation system in your car make you anxious? Well, knowing where to go might become as easy as looking at your wristwatch.

These rudimentary subdermal implants, currently being tested by volunteers in the Morhemian armed forces, can either be linked to your smartphone or directly to the GPS network. Not only is this useful for soldiers, who need to concentrate on the way ahead and have no time for maps, the visual signals and vibrations indicating new directions might be a glimpse into the future of personal navigation.

Right now, we are in the early stages of this technology. Five big red lights below your skin might already be pretty nice to have, but this is just the beginning. It doesn't take much creativity to imagine larger arrays of small LEDs displaying information such as the time or weather on the back of your hand.

The implants were inserted with during a thirty minute operation by a single nurse. Naturally, the volunteers received local anesthetics to make them numb to the pain of somebody cutting up your hand and shoving a chip in. The removal of the implant after the test period takes the same amount of time and effort.

However, the question still remains whether or not it is work getting a rudimentary subdermal implant or simply waring a smart watch that does all the same things and more but better. Nevertheless, this development is still really interesting, not only to us, but also to other companies. With Elegy anouncing their participation in the Morhemian Trade and Industry Zone, some already speculate that the megacorp might soon reach out to Zenith Data Systems to inquire about a potential cooperation.

We will continue to report on these fascinating developments in the world of cybernetic implants and bodymodding.

Smart school uniforms hit the classrooms

Mandatory school uniforms have guaranteed equality in the schoolyard, a feeling of unity and easy identification throughout the Sunset Sea Islands for decades. This year, however, has marked a new chapter in the long history of SSI school uniforms, as more and more schools have decided to introduce smart uniforms with sewn-in microchips.

The first and most obvious advantage is the elimination of any chance to skip school. By instantly knowing whether or not a student has appeared to school, parents and authorities can immediately be informed. Naturally, the first step is to inform the parents and ask, whether or not the student is home because of an illness, should that not have been reported beforehand. Should they not be, a police car can be dispatched to the runaway's exact location and escort them back to the classroom, thanks to tracking and facial recognition. Also, thanks to the chip the schools know exactly, whether a student is on time or has a tendency of running late.

Furthermore, thanks to this technology, parents can rest assured, knowing that their child is safe at school or on their way home. Should parents discover some unusual behaviour, they can now address the problem directly. Also, it eliminates the chance of students covering for one another, by claiming that their friends are at their homes, when, in fact, they are not. Furthermore, swapping uniforms is impossible as well, since the chips are linked to the biometric data of each individual student. Should the school's CCTV network pick up a student whose face doesn't match their uniform, an alarm is triggered.

However, these are not the only benefits of this system. These chips eliminate the need for student cards at libraries or menses, as the data about which books the student has borrowed or which meal they have ordered for the day can be stored on the chips. The technology can be applied in a similar way at cultural institutions, such as museums, art galleries, theatres, cinemas or swimming pools, for example for calculating discounts. In the future, sewn-in microchips could also be used outside schools, for example at workplaces, to ensure that the workforce is on time and fulfilling their duties.

The government of the Radiant Republic of the Sunset Sea Islands supports this motion, announcing additional funds for schools that decide to introduce smart school uniforms. By tracking the location of students, the risk of horrible crimes, such as kidnappings and molestation can be fought efficiently. As always, one must keep in mind that if one has nothing to hide, one has nothing to fear. Lastly, how could a responsible citizen of the Sunset Sea Islands be against a technology increasing the safety of their children?

Government legalises sale of lab-grown meat

There are two main reasons for people to go vegetarian or even vegan in today's day and age. Either they are opponents of animals suffering, or they want to protest against the large ecological impact of large-scale cattle farms, or both. Cell culture meat promise to end both of those problems at once. Now, it can legally be sold.

Lab-grown meat is a cleaner alternative to CO2-intensive classical forms of farming

Over the course of the last few years, scientists around the world worked hard on creating edible and tasty test tube meat for various reasons, the most important one being the ecological impact of cow farms, as about ten percent of global CO2 emissions originate from a cow's bum. Naturally, scientists from the Sunset Sea Islands were at the forefront of these efforts.

However, as the technology to grow meat in-vitro evolves, national legislation often lags behind. Today, however, the government of the Radiant Republic of the Sunset Sea Islands passed new legislation that allows shops to distribute petri dish meat to the public.

The legalisation of lab-grown meat could have wide-spread effects on the population, as vegetarians now have the possibility to eat meat that was produced without animal suffering and carnivores can satisfy their hunger for animal products without straining the environment.

In the future, so the scientists say, it might even be possible to switch to cell culture meat entirely. "Last year, we've seen the advent of the first vertical farms. The same could be done with petri dish meat. By continuing to work on this project, we have a chance of not only saving the environment, but also of ending world hunger." a representative explains. "First, however, we still have a bit of work to do on the taste."

The finest cell-culture steak the Radiant Republic currently has to offer can be purchased at Yuyake 101's panoramic restaurant for 40 Sols.

    • Dead Shffahkian Inmate Found in Solitary Confinement Cell Ignites Controversy Jaïr Taulle, 38, was found dead in a solitary confinement cell in the Éleigne Federal Penitentiary on January the 7th 2019. The death was initially reported as a suicide by the prison faculty. However, the sister of the deceased, Anne Lozé, didn't buy the initial report later filing a request for an investigative committee to look into the matter on January 9th. The Committee for the Investigation of Prisoner Maltreatment in Éleigne Federal Penitentiary returned January 14th with its findings that would go on to shock many Shffahkians. The committee found that Jaïr Taulle had died of dehydration as a result of extreme neglect from the prison staff.   Interviews with staff members reveal that he was left as the only inmate in solitary confinement by a checking error leading to him essentially being forgotten. A guard wishing to remain anonymous said ".... [the] part where solitary confinement is located is actually rarely visited by guards or staff when there's no inmate there." The committee concluded with the finding that a checking error had led to Taulle being reported as absent from solitary confinement when in reality he was still there. The guard in charge of checking was found to not have been actually the one to conduct the procedure. Rather he had left it to another guard which according to the anonymous guard isn't very rare. "The lack of resources and manpower often leads to situations where senior guards allocate their duties to newer officers." The horrific discovery of the actual conditions in Éleigne has galvanized many into action and caused an uproar in many parts of Shffahkia. The locals living near Éleigne have signed a petition to close the facility down. The petition will be looked over by the Mines Générales rehabilitation committee. Yet this isn't the first time the treatment of prisoners has caused uproar in Shffahkia. It isn't even the first time Éleigne has caused such controversy. Colloquially Éleigne is known as Monmor (Mont Mort) for its location and infamous reputation.  Prison reform has long been discussed and advocated for. There has even been a hit movie called "The Blue Inmate"  based on a book of the same name written by Sacha Taôme. The Blue Inmate is a biography telling the story of the writer's own experiences as an inmate in a similar neglected facility in the early 2000s. The most memorable scene from the movie is the so called "yard execution" where a guard outright shoots an uncooperative inmate. "The system became very clear to me at that moment. Guards who are willing to do egregious acts get promoted while the decent leave. This is all in the name of efficiency, to keep the facility productive. The food shortages, overworking inmates and the disregard most are put under make perfect sense when you think of the purpose of the facility: to produce as much as possible with the lowest cost. It all creates this toxic atmosphere where inmates live in a perpetual state of terror fearing for their very survival. To my knowledge, that guard hasn't faced any repercussions for taking the inmate's life to this day." Sacha writes about the occurrence.  Tougher Than Tough When Is It Enough? Enacting prison reform isn't a simple affair. The Federal Senate, the Chamber of Representatives and the Collective of Ministers have no say in prison reform as rehabilitation and facilities related to it are strictly under the control of the Shffahkian Council. The sitting president of the Council, President Rémy, has flat out stopped any attempt at reform. His "tougher-than-tough" rehabilitation policy is mostly credited with the current prison system and its results both good and bad. According to the current system, inmates are classified as either risk inmates or not. The risk classification is given to repeat offenders or inmates charged with especially heinous crimes such as murder or corruption. In practice, this creates two systems, and depending on the system where an inmate is put, it could be the difference between rehabilitation and neglect.  System 1 has been praised for its efficiency and results. First-time offenders often find that prison life in the 1st system resembles everyday life with facilities looking more like campuses. Inmates also have a myriad of employment and education options. The 1st system is first and foremost made to rehabilitate. As a result, it boasts great results such as a low return rate. The 1st system seems and in many ways is radically forgiving. It is focused on the bigger picture, what's best for society. In stark contrast to the 1st system, is the 2nd system where so called risk inmates are sent. Repeated offences, bad behavior and heinous crimes lead to an inmate being branded as a risk. The largest difference between the two systems is that the 2nd system is not designed to rehabilitate its prisoners. Risk inmates are often forced to into physical labor and are offered little in terms of educational opportunities. The 2nd system has a history of being put under international and local scrutiny for its cruel and unusual practices. Inmates that do leave the 2nd system often experience dire physical and psychological medical problems from beatings and psychological torture which are a part of everyday prison life. President Rémy's prison reforms have set a bleak outlook for anyone designated to be a risk since funding has largely been allocated to the 1st system. A 2017 study from the University of Shffahkiaville revealed that 2nd system facilities allocate only a 6th of the funding per prisoner than their 1st system counterparts.  "The lack of funding has led to facilities having to compensate through 'morally grey' activities. These include selling prisoner labor even when the facility in question isn't a labor camp and reselling prisoner's food and other supplies which means prisoners often get food only every other day in the present and that prison cafeterias are often empty. This is because facilities in the 2nd system often have such lacking funding that we have next to nothing left after we consider the pay for the faculty. If a facility wants to have educational courses or anything of the sort, it has to come up with the funding itself." An anonymous warden had to say of the situation. The Senate, Chamber and Collective of Ministers have all passed bills officially requesting for prison reform from the Council, but President Rémy has stood by his reforms arguing that a harsher stance on repeat offenders and heinous criminals deters crime, and that lowered funding leads to the resources being spent on those who still have a chance of rehabilitation. In fact, President Rémy has advocated for even harsher treatment but has been stopped by more moderate members of the Shffahkian Council. With the situation as it is in the Council, prison reform of any kind seems unlikely despite popular demand.

He went and set a timer for 30 minutes on his phone and began to follow those who left to visit the Eisteddfod, ignoring the press following him around completely. He could just feel the headlines begin to be written and generated, "President Tartaglione seen visiting PyeMcGowan Eisteddfod," he imagined. There was still that feeling in the back of his mind about possible listening devices being placed in the conference hall. One reporter with a notepad leaped in front of the president. "Loki Freymarsson, Alenian National Tribune! What has changed about the Chionian and Leverne Island fishing rights? What did you talk about in there?"  President Tartaglione suddenly panicked, Loki had scared him and he almost forgot what he was supposed to say. With a stutter, he spoke, "tariffs on imported foodstuffs are being lowered." Loki squinted at the president and, with a nod, wrote it down on his notepad. "Thank you, Mr. President." Loki ran off and vanished into the crowd. President Tartaglione continued with his day and returned to the Hall of Prosperity cafeteria for lunch.
