2018 ANAFA League Cup

Recommended Posts

There was enthusiastic cheering occurring outside Lusankya Stadium as the Aluxite Red Eagles had managed to overcome the Fulgistani Golden Tigers in the final minutes of the first match of the ANA Cup. Observing the joyous crowds were the dour Imperial security forces, on hand to ensure reasonable celebration and maintaining public order. Meanwhile inside the arena, though people were leaving, the press corps was assembled in a scrum with Mitar Valesovic, the forward who scored the sole goal, and the team's coach, Pytor Olkav.

"...yes, yes," started Pytor, "those Alharuan tigers played a good game but we caged them. But I will not lie to you, our next match against Iverica will not be a walkover. They performed mightly in the World Cup and are certainly in the top five best teams in the entire UENA. We have spent considerable time preparing a winning strategy to beat them."

"Mitar," spoke up a report, "Pavel Korovic from Vorzyd." Valesovic nodded. "That play you executed in the final minute, was that at all prepared for the match?"

"No. As you saw, the game was essentially tied up until that moment but when Yusuf Majid and Oleg Sidek moved out of position, both myself and Vikar knew we had to take advantage of the pocket in the defensive line. Harlov took the ball away from Timur and passed it off to Vikar who fought through the pocket, before passing it off to me for the net. I firmly believe that they were tired and just wanted the match over. Such an opportunity may have occurred today, it will certainly not happen against the Ivericans. They have a solid defense: Diego Sorro and Anton Bandera were world-class. They'll be a challenge but for me and my colleagues, we're ready."

He was interrupted by another reporter. "What do you have to say about Léonel Messy?"

"He's an amazing player, I have tremendous respect for him and I am ready to take him on."

"One more question," said the team's publicist. "Coach Olkav," he acknowledged, "we heard a wild rumor that you were planning on bringing the young midfielder, Dmitri Petja, on the pitch next week."

"We haven't confirmed the roster for our game against the Ivericans but Petja has shown tremendous talent which is why we brought him onto the squad this year. I will say that he will get some game time during the Cup but we're planning one match at a time."

"Alright, no further question," and two grim bodyguards began approaching, cowing the press members to back off as Olkav and Valesovic return to the team's clubhouse for the post-match meeting with the rest of the team.

Above the gathering, Crown Prince Kravos was still seated in the Royal Box, talking on his cell phone to an anonymous member of the Imperial Diplomatic Corps who was close to the Prince. "...make arrangements for me to meet with representatives of the nations on the list I sent to you in the encrypted email...we'll talk over the matches...there is much to discuss...thank you..."

SÆTHER BECOMES PRYMONT'S TOP ALL-TIME GOAL SCORER

Prymont 2 - 1 @Limonaia
Central Canastota Sports Stadium, Prymont

Ollie Sæther has broken Prymontian records once again, by becoming the Yetis' all-time top goal scorer with 21 goals. He inherited the record from Herman Nymoen, a historic Prymontian footballer who retired in 2012 after a successful career. Sæther achieved this feat in the recent ANAFA Cup match against Limonaia, scoring the team's only two goals to recover from an early goal by the Falcons. Known for being one of the top goal scorers in the 2018 @Orioni World Cup, Sæther cemented himself as one of Prymont's greats in the eventful game last night.

The game started off with a rapid pace, seeing both teams making several attempts on goal before defender Dale was shown a yellow card for an aggressive tackle in the 12th minute. In the 15th minute, Prymont conceded their first and only goal of the match, and turned their pace up a notch with two more attempts on goal. Come the 38th minute and Sæther received a long pass from Strand, allowing him to slip between the last two defenders and slot the ball into the bottom right corner after sending the keeper the wrong way. Now even, the team take their time to recover and conserve their energy for the second half, forcing Limonaia into a desperate tackle resulting in a yellow card.

Strand was substituted for Torgersen during half time, which saw cold, heavy rain. The overhead roof was quickly closed and heaters beneath the pitch were turned on to evaporate the moisture before the game could resume. Many fans were quick to appreciate and support the funding placed into the stadium, to give the country a world-class venue that can beat Prymont's harsh weather.

In just the 47th minute, the star forward kept the crowd warm and cheering by scoring his second goal, edging Prymont ahead of the competition. The game remained a close one, with both teams trading attacks and counter-attacks. Prymont were keen to keep their lead and possibly extend it, while Limonaia clawed at the defense in an attempt to equalise and get ahead once more. Dale was substituted from the defence to protect from his yellow card as the teams were getting rather scrappy, and was replaced by the cool and collected Eskeland. In the final ten minutes, Herheim was also substituted, slotting Lona into the front of the game to support Sæther and to extend their lead. Despite not being able to score any further goals, the Yetis' defence was on point and was able to shut down any considerable attacks from the Limonaians, resulting in mass applause from pundits and fans alike.

A cheerful Sæther speaks to the press after the match.

"It was a great game today and I'm really pleased with the effort everyone put in," remarked an elated Sæther after the match. "It's an honour to have scored the most goals for the Yetis now, and it's something else that I can be very proud of in my career. I want to thank all of the fans for coming out to support us at home, they all really made the difference and allowed us to excel."

Nojus Fauskanger was equally as keen to praise his team in the post-match press conference. "Everyone did a fantastic job and their hard training is really coming through. The defence was strong, the midfield was fluid and quick, and the boys upfront were very clinical and determined in their attempts on goal. We executed some great set pieces and showed that this new, young squad is one to be reckoned with."

Clearly, the lessons learned from Prymont's pre-season friendly with Limonaia were put to good use in this game, improving their result from a draw to a clear win. The team remains atop the ANAFA league table, with the only other team to win both games being the highly rated @Variotan squad. The Yetis will face @Seylos in just four days time, a team who are still difficult to judge with both a win and a loss. Fauskanger has chosen to rest several key players, such as Sæther, Bakken, Henden, Borge, and Ulleberg, and will give young players a chance to prove themselves against a fair team.

La Gazzetta dello Sport

Griffons Clawed by Fulgistani Tigers: Where is this Team Going?

Opinion by Enzo Portella

Readers: let's be honest for a moment - the Soreanan Griffons are just awful. They lost again to the Fulgistani Tigers and who told you that was going to happen? Me! The Golden Tigers dominated the entire game until the last twenty minutes when our nearly-dead players grew a spine and finally made an attempt at playing our beloved sport. They did score, but they didn't score enough to win the match. And you know who gave the team that goal: that mysterious 23-year old Lorenzo Orsini. I swear to you that if he gets at all injured at any point from here on out, Soreana should just concede the Cup and give up. Seriously guys! I am going to keep this submission brief but I am just going to say this: Roberto Scozzari should be fired by the SFA and replaced at this end of a disgraceful performance. We should be doing better than Seylos and clearly, our team has prepared for the wrong competition. The Griffons need to beat Variota, a tall order if they are to get any modicum of respect by the people. We'll see how well they meet that apparently low bar of expectation in Solaris Stadium.

Special News Bulletin.

Victory for the Golden Boys was achieved today over the savages playing for Fulgenland. Overall, it was a rather uneventful match. The horsemen were as uncivilised as ever, and attempted to hound our players like dogs desperate for a bone throughout the game. Despite their persistence (and quite possibly because of it), their players were unable to score a single goal throughout the entire game. It was a bit past the halfway that Schneider managed to score a goal against the opposing team. Loud expletives could be heard coming from the supporters. Whether these were aimed at the Fulgenlanders, our boys, or both teams is unknown. The rest of the game went by rather unremarkably, except for an incredible string of four failed attempts at scoring a goal by four of Fulgenland's players. The first shot went wide, hitting the left post of the goal and bouncing out only to have the ball intercepted by a second player who kicked it back for it to this time go too high and hit to the top of the goal, where it was quickly head butted by a third player directly into the goalkeeper's fist, where it was finally kneed once more towards the goal for the goalkeeper to catch it.

YETIS VICTORIOUS OVER @Seylos AS PNN JOINS SUPPORTERS TO ENJOY THE GAME

Prymont 2 - 1 Seylos
KAP Stadium, Prymont

The Prymontian Yetis remain at the top of the ANAFA League Cup after establishing a first-half lead over the Seylosians in the third round of matches. The team scored two goals, courtesy of Magnus Herheim and Fillip Roth, before conceding once to Seylos in the dying stages of the game. This evening, PNN Sports joined the Fjellheim family in their home in Virso, to enjoy the viewing experience from a family perspective. We hope you enjoy the following.

"Julia, get the kettle on, the game's about to start!" Mr Fjellheim commands from his armchair, positioned directly before the television set. Usually he enjoys the evening fixtures from the corner of the room, but tonight is the night where the Yetis may win their third game in a row. Martin, the figurehead of the family and a self-proclaimed football extraordinaire, is incredibly excited for the game. The starting line-up appears on the screen as the players warm up, and after adjusting his glasses to rub off mineral residue from his daily mining job, Martin gives us his feedback on the starting eleven.

"Obviously they're making a mistake by not starting Ollie (Sæther, Prymont's leading all-time goal scorer). Did you see how he played last match? He put those Lemon bastards to bed! I don't even know half of these names, they're all useless. What's that Nojus (Fauskanger, team manager) bloke doing? Julia, where's my tea?" Mrs Fjellheim appears moments later, carrying a tray of tea and biscuits for her husband to enjoy during the football.

The game starts quickly, with both teams trading shots on and around the opposite goals with one another, much to Martin's elation and anger. Tea is spilt on the floor as he criticises a near miss from striker Herheim in the 21st minute. "Just kick it into the net, it's not hard! My son could do that and he's bloody useless!" Julia rushes the children, who are sat on the accompanying sofa to watch the game, to bed, amidst gentle tears from the son. Minutes later and Martin is now critiquing their passing, when suddenly, Herheim scores the first goal of the game.

"Get in there you beauty! I never doubted you, you amazing f*cker! Go on son, get another one!" The Yetis miss their next shot in the 35th minute, before right winger Fillip Roth slides the ball into the next beyond the Seylosian keeper just a minute later.

"YYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!! SUCK ON THAT, SEYLOS! YOU'RE DERTHALEN'S b*tch AND NOW YOU'RE OURS TOO!" The celebrations of thousands of fans within the KAP Stadium cannot match the joy and excitement within the living room of the Fjellheim's home. The children upstairs struggle to get to sleep.

The remainder of the first-half is dominated by the Prymontians, who are perhaps getting too arrogant when Roth launches an audacious tackle against Seylos, earning himself a yellow card. This displeases Mr Fjellheim. "OH, WHAT THE f*ck DO YOU KNOW?" He points his question towards the referee, as Roth laughs off the booking. "HE BARELY TOUCHED HIM! JULIA, IS THIS MAN FROM SEYLOS?" Julia Boogaloo's the nationality of the referee as a replay of the tackle shows Roth viciously sliding into the Seylosian's feet. Commentators wonder if it should've been a red card instead.

As the second half begins, two substitutions are made - Roth is sent to the benches to protect against a red card and is replaced by Vincent Borge, who swaps positions with Oliver Husum. "That's our boy Vincent, he knows how to play football!" Defender Simon Jensen is also replaced by fellow defender Trym Hansen. Martin likes Hansen after The Peak reported he'd had an affair with a former manager's young girlfriend. "I would've done the same, after all. She's cracking! Have you seen the melons on her? I bet Trym felt like he was playing football in bed!" His wife Julia looks on ashamedly.

The second-half begins slower, with both teams vying for possession of the ball. The Yetis are relaxed now, eager to preserve their lead while ensuring that the Seylosians do not take advantage of their calmer play style. Martin provides bored commentary, dissatisfied with the lack of goals, until Seylos is shown a yellow card for a defender tugging at the shirt of Will Kristoffersen. "Oh come on! Give him a red, that's unbelievable! Julia, are you sure he's not being paid by that queer prince?"

Twelve minutes later, Seylos scores their first goal of the game. It is too little too late, as the United States are now at high alert to prevent an equaliser. Nevertheless, Martin is infuriated. "WHAT THE f*ck IS GOING ON? HOW DID HE NOT SAVE THAT? Julia, did you see that? Julia? Julia, pay attention!" Julia has just come back downstairs after comforting the children, who are still struggling to sleep. It is now long past their bedtime.

After three tense minutes of injury time, Prymont end the game 2-1 up. Martin is ecstatic. "YYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! WHAT A BLOODY BRILLIANT GAME OF FOOTBALL!" Julia informs her husband that the next game is also being played at the KAP Stadium, against the @Variotans. The Yetis are believed to be fielding an all-star line-up to protect their lead atop the table, and Julia wishes to protect her children's bedtime routines by sending her husband away for a night in Canastota. Martin enthusiastically agrees.

Martin Fjellheim gives a delighted thumbs up when asked to describe the team's performance.

A Complete Shock: Soreanan Griffons Grab Victory by the Talons over Variota

Opinion by Enzo Portella

I am still completely in absolute shock. They actually did it. They actually won a match. Against Variota. All the betting odds were against them and they have completely upended everything and left me speechless - and folks - it takes a considerable amount to make that happen. Variota, the second-best team in the Cup rankings, and widely considered one of the most dangerous teams on the pitch, was beaten. There are really no words to describe this other than two words: Lorenzo Orsini. Why didn't Roberto Scozzari find this kid well before the Cup began, let alone during the qualification round?! We would be owning the table if he was in the front squad from the very beginning but its clear with this win that he truly is the best thing to come out of Soreanan football.

If I were the manager of Soreana F.C., the greatest domestic team, I'd buy him from Tenza right now - at whatever the price. He is simply underutilized there. Even better, a foreign team should take him on immediately after the Cup. He should definitely be in next year's squad and with that, dump Corvi. He's dead weight and was never a great forward. He was only put on the team because his own father paid the national association a rather substantial donation towards a new practice facility outside the capital. I still think Scozzari is a moron but whatever he did to beat the Variots, he just needs to do that again next week or rather, the rest of the entire round. Don't change the lineup at all. The Griffons now face Iverica, who are a totally different team and equally as dangerous. Let's not get too ahead of ourselves. The odds of us getting into the next stage is still low. The next match has been referred to by those far and wide as Orsini vs. Messy.

"You did well out there today boys," said Coach Olkav, "much, much better than that miserable performance against the Fulgistanis." The team was in high spirits, having been told that their standing in the competition wasn't all too harmed by their loss to Fulgistan and if anything their victory over Ahrana gave them stability going into the middle stretch of the round. "But," he started, "don't get overconfident. The Ahranaians have been outright horrible this entire Cup and if we had lost to them, I would have just thrown half of you off the team for such stupidity." He was pacing back and forth.

"The Limonaians are our next match. They're good. Yes, they've had their pitfalls this cycle, but they're full of surprises. Fortunately for us, they're playing us on our own turf and with today's win, our fans will be out in full force to cheer us on." He stopped moving for a moment. "Many members of the top 11 are not going to be on the field for this match-up as I am hedging my bets that we'll beat Limonaia - not to mention that we need many of you to be ready to take on the Prymontians in the 5th Round. "Valesovic, Shinev, Tafno, and Pilyev: you're staying on the bench unless I absolutely need to put you four on in an emergency. In their place: Kavos, Petja, Toval, and Jarnek, you're taking their places."

They nodded their heads. Mitar was not happy about not playing the Limonaians in the upcoming match but he soon got over it and began running plays through his head in what would either be his finest moment or Aluxia's worst performance in the entire Cup - not so much based on score but in humiliation. Coach Olkav having seen the team was acknowledging his change-up, proceeding. "We'll be starting training for both matches tomorrow morning, 8:00am sharp. Yes, we won. But no heavy partying. Save it for when we beat Prymont." A few of the men chuckled. "Alright, dismissed until tomorrow," and so ended the meeting. The players gathered their belongings and prepared to leave the visiting clubhouse for their chartered bus to take them back to the airport.

Olkav was the last to leave, only to be bombarded by the press, including Voyzd, who had called him five times during the match for quotes. Their reporter attempted to ask his question and instead of answering, the coach decided to punch him out cold. Then he got on the bus. Olkav, being a former military man, never liked the press. The team's publicist witnessed it and immediately made a dozen phone calls to Imperial authorities in Vardin to help cover up the incident.

Draw between Limonaia and @Iverica

Limonaia remains at a mediocre position following the third match in the ANAFA 2018 League Cup. The previous match against Iverica was by most considered an improvement following the defeat against Prymont last week, with Limonaia currently placing 4th in the league. Yesterday's match was a hard fought match for both sides. In the fist half of the match, the Limonaian defense failed to hold up, allowing for many Iverican shots, and a goal to Iverica at 21 minutes. In the latter half of the game, Limonaia's defense improved, and Milani equalized the score at the beginning of the second period. The remainder of the match has been described by our "experts" as extremely boring with both sides failing to get ahead.

"Iverica is perceived as one of the best teams in the league, and we're at least happy to have matched them today. While the match with Prymont was an embarrassment, I am certain that with some hard work we'll recover and beat Aluxia in the next match" said Markus Bekkers when asked about the upcoming match.

VICTORY OVER @Variota OVERSHADOWED BY ROTH INJURY

Prymont 3 - 2 Variota
KAP Stadium, Prymont

A scoreline of 3-2 over the World Cup finalists Variota would be something for Prymontians to celebrate deep into the night, but many forgot about their glory as star winger Fillip Roth currently recovers from a broken ankle sustained during last night's game. The right wing was the first to score for Prymont, in the 57th minute. Alex Bakken had sent a high ball in from the left side, with Sæther's shot on goal hitting the crossbar. Roth accompanied the forward in the box, and headed the rebounded ball into the goal, drawing the Yetis even. However, he landed awkwardly on his right foot, and was left writhing in pain while he should've been celebrating.

Medics were quick to take him to the medical centre of the KAP Stadium, and he was then transferred to the nearby Central Canastota Hospital before the end of the match. Much to the dismay of the rest of his team, Fillip will not be able to participate in any football games until at least the start of 2019. The typical recovery period for a broken ankle is six weeks, but doctors advise Roth to take extra time as he injured his dominant foot, and they also suspect tendon and ligament injuries. If agitated, these additional wounds could aggravate his foot further, extending his recovery period and affecting the performance of the main squad.

The worry for their teammate's injury didn't slow the Yetis down though, as Sæther scored five minutes later, before Borge sealed the victory with a brilliant strike in the 69th minute. The Variotans were ever persistent, and scored a second goal in the 88th minute, but it was not enough to equalise, handing Prymont their forth win in a row. This victory cements them at the top of the ANAFA League table, with the Yetis now the only team to only win their games in the tournament. Pundits were very positive about the result, commenting that "if the Yetis can beat Variota, they can beat anyone!"

Nojus Fauskanger avoided complacency in the post-match press conference, showing concern for one of his star players as well as for his team's form in their next game against @Aluxia. "Losing Fillip for the rest of the year isn't great for the team's dynamic, but we'll adapt and overcome it. What's important now is the fact that we won against one of the best teams in the world, which gives me great confidence going into the rest of our games during this stage of the Cup. Beating Variota was unexpected, but shows that we've got an amazing team that can do the impossible."

Team captain Vincent Borge, who recorded his 104th cap and 13th national goal in the game, was much more sombre. "Everyone knows how important Fillip is to our team, and to our style of play. He's one of the best right wingers in the game right now and losing him for the foreseeable future will really hurt us. I have faith in the rest of the team and know that we can still perform, but it's gutting to see such a promising talent out for what might be the rest of the tournament. You can never be too sure with these injuries and he might not play the same again. We can only hope for a speedy, full recovery."

The Yetis will have to remain on form in their next match against Aluxia, before receiving some breathing space in the subsequent games against @Fulgistan and @Ahrana. Fauskanger is expected to take those two games as time to fully rest star players, before mounting attacks on two strong teams at the end of the round robin stage: @Derthalen and @Iverica. Prymont currently stand atop the table with 12 points.

The Aluxians had played a spirited game against the Limonaians. Although they lost and dropped down to 7th in the rankings, Olkav wasn't too concerned. His focus was on taking on the Prymontians at home next week. They were an outstanding team and even he was surprised they had beaten then-second place Variota. To take on the top team, he'd need the most impossible line-up and make it work. A tall order.

Olkav sat with his fellow senior staff in a conference room at Lusankya Stadium in the capital of Vardin. "...according to the international press, Roth is out," one member said. The Prymontian had been a key player in setting up their chain of wins in the Cup. "Because he's out, they'll use a different playbook. And so we've prepared this proposal for the group's, and ultimately Coach's approval..."

lineup_by_zagush-dcqq985.png

The coaching staff looked at the lineup carefully. "A bold move to put Sarev on the pitch in the defensive line but he has done some good work on the local Endvo team." Olkav then questioned, "Valesovic's placement seems to me you are recommending that he be used more to screen then to score..." The proposer responded, "yes and that is not to say that he cannot go one-to-one with the Prymontians but they will absolutely know to block him. We need to surprise them with a forward who really hasn't played that much but still as powerful as their best striker."

"Mettic is completely untested. He shouldn't play in this match at all. He would be better to take on a less...demanding role later in the competition." Olkav retorted. "We have already had the easier matches of the round. The only other team we're going to be playing is Soreana and they're in a terrible state." There were nods in the room. "He stays where he is but I want him to screen the Prymontian defensive line, alongside Klev."

"We'll make that happen." The coach looked down the conference table and continued the conversation about the strategy against the strongest team. "Are there any questions before we lock the playbook?"

There were none.

"Alright, this is the lineup we're going to use. The Prymontians are going to focus on offensive power to bolster their top position in the rankings but Roth's injury is going to certainly hurt them. I don't want to be a jerk but I want them to feel more pain when they see us playing them next week." He turned to his second-in-command, "Balko, the players are to begin preparing for this strategy right now. Three training sessions a day, no exceptions."

"We're going to beat these Prymontians and then they'll learn that all good things come to an end. We'll stop them on the field. Let's get this done. Meeting dismissed."

Olkav walked out of the room and began walking back to his office and pulled out his cell phone and dialed a number. A voice responded. "...Mettic, can you please come down to the Stadium, you and I need to have a serious conversation...no, no...you're not in trouble...its about your debut appearance...yes next week...four o'clock...good, see you then."

YETIS LOSE FIRST ANAFA 2018 GAME TO @Aluxia

Prymont 1 - 2 Aluxia
Lusankya Stadium, Aluxia

...Next on PNN Sports, we'll be joining reporters in the Lusankya Stadium for the post-match press conference of the Prymont-Aluxia game. The Yetis experienced their first loss in the tournament this year against Aluxia, with some fans calling for the Prymontian Football Association to refuse to play in the country again. We'll join the conference now, where team manager Nojus Fauskanger and captain Vincent Borge are speaking to the press.

"Nojus, coming to you first, this is Prymont's first loss this tournament, which must be a hard pill to swallow. What weren't you doing right today, and how will you recover from it?"

"Yeah, it's not easy to accept a loss, especially when it's the first one for this tournament. We've been playing really well so far and that showed in the results, and even today the boys played their best but it clearly wasn't enough. Obviously, losing Fillip (Roth, injured midfielder) has been detrimental to our play style as he's crucial in his position, but Magnus (Herheim, replacing Roth) did a brilliant job to step in for him, and the rest of the team tried really hard too. We haven't played Aluxia since 2013 and that was with a completely different team, so we were very unsure what their strengths and weaknesses were going into this game. I think everyone will move on quickly from it. We've got a great team with very determined players, who will see this as an opportunity to be even better than before and win the next game."

"Vincent, moving on to you, you played the entire match today and got to see how your team coped with the Aluxians. Is there anything in specific that you think could've been done better to secure the win?"

"It was a very aggressive game, as we were eager to keep our streak and the Aluxians were eager to end it, and so I think everyone was a bit tentative to avoid injuries and such. Our defenders did a great job, perhaps a bit sloppy as they picked up three yellow cards, but by around the sixtieth minute everyone was tiring and that's when they took advantage. We tried to come back but the energy and the passion wasn't there, it was just kind of desperate and unorganised. To have a better chance of winning, we should've taken our chances earlier in the game and made them stick. We were playing very well in the early stages but couldn't take advantage of any opportunities, which is where we went wrong."

"You mention being desperate to keep your winning streak, but by the end of it all you're still leading the table. Isn't that what matters?"

"Yes, the points at the end is ultimately what's important, but we're all very proud footballers and really find happiness and reward in winning. We have one of the best squads I've ever been part of this year and the first four matches really showed that. Everyone today knew that we could win, and we were determined to prove ourselves right. I think it's important now to remind ourselves of what's important, which is the standings, and just focus on staying in the top eight rather than keeping a streak going."

"Nojus, we understand it's been very tough for your players to get settled in to Aluxia. The fans here have been relentless, unforgiving, and it's hard to ignore the effect that's hard on the team. Supporters at home are calling for the Yetis to never return to Aluxia. Do you agree with that?"

"No. I think it's more of a general football problem than something unique to Aluxia. Fans everywhere, Prymont included, will get very serious about the sport, and that enthusiasm is something to be proud of, but we should be channelling it into kindness for each other rather than tormenting. We're all here to play and enjoy the same game. I don't really think it was a problem for my players as they've had lots of mental and psychological training to block out that sort of thing. It's just like Vincent said - we didn't take our chances early on, and paid the price."

"It's common knowledge that you'll be resting top players like Sæther and Bakken for the two upcoming games against @Fulgistan and @Ahrana. How will this affect your team's morale and performance?"

"I don't think it'll hurt much. We have some promising players on the sidelines that I'm keen to see play in an experimental lineup, and playing against two of the maybe weaker teams in the tournament is a great opportunity for them to show their skills with minimal risk to the standings. It's very important for us to rest the top performing players for the final two matches of this segment against @Derthalen and @Iverica so we're playing at our best and don't get eliminated. Our team is constantly evolving and improving, so it's a really good chance to see how some of the less experienced players hold up."

"Even with this loss, critics are expecting the Yetis to progress to the quarter finals in December. This is perhaps Prymont's best chance at winning their first ever tournament, so how are you preparing for that outcome? I understand that Fillip won't be healthy until at least January, so can we expect more disappointing performances like these?"

"We're not thinking any further ahead than our next match. We're still a small team and we need to take this one step at a time. Getting through to the quarter finals is priority number one right now. That alone is an achievement to be proud of, especially for a team with a history like ours. The boys know what's at stake and are training hard to make sure we get through. We're doing everything we can. Losing Fillip in the way that we did for such a long time won't help the squad, of course, but we have very capable players to stand in for him and I don't doubt their abilities for one moment. If we won the whole tournament, that'd be brilliant, but we're not there yet."

"I'd just like to add that, while Fillip is a great player, he's not the single key to our success. The key is how we work as a team, how we play with one another, how dynamic and flexible we are, how good we're adapting to different challenges. Not having on the team isn't great but it's not the end of the world. I've been playing for the Yetis since 2000 and I can safely say that this is the best team I've ever played with. Everyone works hard and has the talent to perform at the top level, and that's worth some applause. We've got to recognise everyone's hard work, as that's the best way to get every ounce of performance out of everyone."

It's great to see two very important figures in the team so confident and assured in their side after this defeat. It lends very well to how they've been trained and their confidence in themselves to come back from this loss as a better team. PNN Sports will be reporting the aftermath of the next game against Fulgistan on the 13th of November. Now, moving on to news about the upcoming KAP World Grand Prix Series...

Another Loss: What a Surprise

Opinion by Enzo Portella

The Griffons lost to the Golden Boys of Derthalen 2-0. I mean, come on! We somehow beat the Variotan Golden Privateers and then just completely get destroyed in the following weeks. Someone one on the Variot team must have been asleep to allow us to win that match. And today's performance was pathetic. Lorenzo Orsini is the only good player on this team and he wasn't even on the team when the squad was formed, as you read in one of my previous columns. He should just walk away from the team now and forgo the League Cup and get signed up to a foreign team and then show his fellow countrymen how football is actually played and not this sad, sorted, and incompetent excuse of a group. It makes me mad just writing. You know what: Roberto, just give up, throw in the towel, and go back to your old job of running a brothel for tourists in the Old City of Soreana. I am sure your old girls would love to see you once more. I am sure our Grand Dutchess is sad to have even bothered to attend a match this year. The Prime Minister should demand hearings into Roberto's horrible strategies. I give up. Oh wait, I've given up since Week 1. I'm done with this.

Note from La Gazzetta: we want to remind our readers that the Government does not have the power to remove the national football coach or liquidate the players. Only the Soreanan Football Association has that authority. A representative from the Prime Minister's office has informed us that a petition including the names of over 124,000 Soreanans was submitted demanding Pozzi remove the coach. No such action will be taken.

The Aluxian press swarmed Coach Olkav, "remarkable performance, any comment?" asked one reporter.

"I want to thank the Prymontians for the spirited match today, they were an outstanding team to compete against. Frankly, I'd want to say that it was the match of the Cup for us. I also want to take this opportunity to wish them well and hope that one of their great players, Roth, recovers well. He is a great player and I know my boys would have loved to play against him on the pitch."

"What do you say about the team's chances going forward?"

"The Aluxians are going to the knockout round. There is no way that isn't going to happen but we must treat each match as a unique opportunity. Yes, we beat the Prymontians today but we don't know what tomorrow brings. This was a learning chance for us to see how many of the other Argic teams compete."

"Valesovic didn't make any goals today..."

"I know what you are going to ask, why not?"

"Because after the first 20 minutes of the game, we completely changed up our strategy and decided to just wear out the Prymontians for the entire first half. Seeing that Roth wasn't on the pitch, it meant we could use some players they were not familiar with like Mettic and Kavos."

"Are they going to be part of the first team for the remainder of the round?"

"They're certainly going to see much more time based on their performance today?"

The team's publicist butted in and said that there was time for one more question.

It was a reporter from Voyazd, the same one he had punched several weeks earlier.

"There are rumors that you took a bribe from a high-ranking official in exchange for taking a dive in a match earlier this season what do you have to say to that?"

He didn't say anything, just punched him again. The publicist was not pleased. "That will be all..." She took him aside. "You have to stop doing that."

"I don't like him. He's an absolute prick and one of these days..."

Just before she could respond, a grim military officer approached him. "Coach Olkav?"

"Yes," he said. The officer continued, "the Crown Prince wanted me to congratulate you on your performance and would like to deliver this message to the Prymontian coach," he instructed.

"What does it say?"

"Neither of us is to know its content. Now get it to him. Now."

The publicist retorted that they would have their heart-to-heart conversation over drinks that night. Olkav walked to the guest clubhouse and knocked on the door. The Prymontians were not exactly in the greatest of spirits with him being present. "I have a message from Crown Prince Kravos for Coach Fauskanger." One of the players motioned him that he was further inside. They didn't have much of a conversation other than him just repeating what he told the player.

"This is for you," handed it to him and left.

There were two pieces of paper: one for the coach saying: 'get the following sealed message to your Government.' Meanwhile the content of the sealed paper was quite brief, addressed to the Prymontian President and Foreign Minister saying only this: 'Democracy is Coming to Aluxia. Signed, Crown Prince Kravos.'

YETIS SECURE PLACE IN QUARTER FINALS OF ANAFA 2018

Prymont 1 - 1 @Fulgistan
Bogd Gioro, Fulgistan

... And that's it for the Prymontian Rallycross Championship, now moving on to football. The biggest headline this morning is Prymont's success in the ANAFA 2018 League, being amongst the first two teams to secure a place in the quarter finals. The Yetis have done this despite receiving a controversial red card in a 1-1 draw against Fulgistan, which saw them play with ten men for the majority of the match.

In the thirteenth minute, rookie Aksel Bratberg was sent off following a tackle against the Fulgistanis. Commentators at the stadium quickly dismissed the tackle, as "very inspired but eventually disappointing", as Bratberg failed to win possession of the ball. The opposing player was tripped, but not aggressively so, leading to the surprise of fans and players alike when Bratberg was given an immediate red card. Team captain Alan Strand was quick to stand up for his defender, but the referee refused to reverse his decision.

Critics noted that, despite being disadvantaged early on, the Yetis were dominant throughout the entire game. It is to be remembered that manager Nojus Fauskanger decided to play a mostly B-team squad to rest key players for future games. The team conceded a goal in the 48th minute, but continued to play well, and Morten Torgersen scored the equaliser in the 71st minute. This result guarantees Prymont a place in the quarter finals alongside @Iverica, who now top the standings, as they currently have thirteen points. @Soreana, who are currently ninth, only have three points. With three games remaining, Prymont cannot drop below eighth, even if they lose every following match and Soreana win all three. @Ahrana face the same fate, as they're currently sat on a single point in last. The Yetis will face them in the next round, in what is expected to be a heated local derby.

Fauskanger congratulated his players for earning themselves such a position at this point in the tournament, and holds the depth and talent of his players as testament to their success. Even though the team are safe at this point, Nojus is still eager for his squad to return to their winning ways.

In the post-match press conference, Nojus also announced some shocking news. Here's a replay of what happened...

"I also have something to announce for our game after Ahrana, against @Derthalen. Due to the overly aggressive nature of the Derthaler team, which was especially apparent in the World Cup earlier this year, the Yetis won't be playing their match against them. We've already had one of our players injured this tournament, and I cannot risk further injuries that would jeopardise our future success. Unless the Derthaler team shows that their play style has calmed significantly, we won't be running that risk."

The room erupts in a flurry of shock and commotion. The manager is illuminated by a sea of camera flashes as reporters squirm against one another to get the first question.

"Nojus, your team has just secured their place in the next stage of the tournament and you're playing some top players against Ahrana in the next game. Is this a ploy to get your guys most rest before an important match against the Ivericans?"

"No, bullsh*t. It's a great bonus that we rest our players, sure, but the important thing is their health heading into the quarter finals. We've already lost Roth until at least January, and I don't want to see more players facing a similar fate."

"Why are you playing people like Sæther and Bakken against Ahrana then? Surely they need to rest too?"

"Neither of them played against Fulgistan, they're fully rested now. It's important that we win this derby match against Ahrana. No more questions."

Lorenzo Orsini Leaves Soreanan National Football Team After Dispute with Coach

Members of the Soreanan press witnessed a massive shouting match between emergency forward Lorenzo Orsini and Coach Roberto Scozzari following the away game against Seylos where their opponent beat them 1-0. The origins of the fight are still disputed but Orsini's agent claims that Scozzari was blaming him for the team's misfortunes, despite, as the agent stated, the young 23-year-old is responsible for nearly all of the team's goals through the competition-to-date. The debate got so heated that Orsini ripped off a team armband and threw it on the ground and walked off. Scozzari was witnessed shouting expletives at the player. Following the post-game confrontation, Orsini's agent officially notified both the coach, the Soreanan Football Association, and the ANAFA leadership that he would be leaving the national team, effective immediately. An SFA spokesperson said that the association's board has summoned the coach to meet with them in Soreana before their next match. They would not comment on whether he would be stripped of his position following the upcoming meeting. A representative for Scozzari could not be reached for comment.

The Argis and Northern Alharu Football Association (ANAFA) and the Southern Alharu, Thalassian, Aurelian and Marenesian Football Confederation (SATAMFC) will both be having their respective league cups start on 8th October (this upcoming Monday). This post walks through the teams that make up each confederation that is slated to appear in each competitive grouping (specific match-ups will be not be determined until the night before).

The slated participating countries are the following:
ANAFA: Iverica, Prymont, Soreana, Ahrana, Sayf, Derthalen, Seylos, Limonaia, Variota, Fulgistan
SATAMFC: Rihan, Kipan, Faramount, Sunset Sea Islands, Asgeirria, Shffarika, Andalla, Gallambria, Pallamara, Mauridiviah

Results of each match will be generated using the FIFA web generator used for the World Cup back at the beginning of the summer (following this cycle of matches, a more formal formula will be devised). Each slated match will only be generated once on the day of the match in question.

Prymont, Limonaia, and I strongly encourage participating countries to write posts over the course of the League Cups. These do not need to specifically match reviews, but they also individuals at home reacting, or a journalist reporting on the result of the match, or even actions occurring during the match itself (coach yelling at players for example). We do not want to be too demanding, but it would great if people could write a few paragraphs (2-4 at minimum). It is my personal intention of trying to use the information generated in these posts to write detailed wiki pages following the end of the competitions that will add flavor beyond just match score results. If you need help generating some ideas for such posts, feel free to run some ideas by the three of us.

Please look here UENA Football Teams for team information. Many of the teams in the above list have already provided such information in the past and hence, do not need to do this again. Ahrana, Sayf, Seylos, Faramount, Andalla, and Pallamara: I need team information (see the UENA Football Teams category on iiWiki) from you.

All slated participants from the above lists must post a response in this thread recognizing that they've read the above post by no later than Sunday afternoon 1pm ET. Their response will be accepted as formal registration for these games. If an above-slated participant does not respond by the deadline, they will be replaced with another potential nation who will be contacted by me.

    • Murdercubism is now an officially recognised religion Alphonse von Wallenstein, 09 December 2018 15:12 A young "kommando" devotee of the Murder Cube paying his respects at the Prince Willem Armoury Museum In 2004, artist Norm Alfred unveiled a masterpiece at the Prince Willem Armoury Museum, Gottesberg. He envisioned his “magnum opus” - hundreds of discarded firearms sculpted into a giant cube - to be the creation of art through the destruction of weapons, a powerful and lasting monument to peace. But as old wisdom tells us, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Alfred certainly saw beauty in his work. It’s a fantastic work of art, after all. However, to the wider Rhodellian internet community, it was beautiful in a different, more grizzly way. The exhibit opened to the general public without much fanfare. But, within weeks, hundreds of visitors were suddenly flocking to see it. These beholders weren’t the daisy-chaining, “kumbaya”-singing hippies Alfred had expected. Instead, his art piece had become the unlikely pilgrimage site of many thousands of young Rhodellian netizens wielding gas masks and old surplus rifles (jokingly referred to as “nuggets”). Each would kneel to the great monolith, offering tributes ranging from cans of Chef Boyardee to “milk for the cornflakes”. Together they would chant “Ave nex alea” and "Cheeki breeki" among other tongue-in-cheek slogans . They saw no symbol of peace, but a tribute to death and destruction. To them, this was their almighty monolith: The Murder Cube. Every year, dozens of thousands of young Rhodellians embark on pilgrimages to the Murder Cube. Pilgrims come from all walks of life. They range from students wishing for the best marks on their school marksmanship exams, to conscripts entering national service after college, to boots praying for success as professional soldiers, marines, airmen, and sailors. Increased traffic to the Prince Willem Armoury Museum has led to the Murder Cube being moved to bigger rooms (twice), road improvements being constructed all over the local area, and a bustling local tourist industry capitalising on the year-wide influx of pilgrims. None of this shows any sign of slowing down.  What might have started out as an in-joke from some shady corner of the internet has grown into a staple of Rhodellian popular culture. As of December 6, 2018, 14 years after its creation, the glorious Murder Cube had ascended to new heights transcending that of cyberspace. A new addition appeared on the Department of State’s roster of officially recognised religions: Murdercubism. News of this grew viral across many social media platforms, with many struggling to believe that worship of the Murder Cube was now, unironically, eligible to be recorded on legal documents. The majority of responses are positive thus far with many Rhodellians internet communities celebrating this development as a cultural victory. On the other hand, many other netizens felt more skeptical, stating that “the joke went too far” and that Murdercubism’s recent recognition as a valid religion was a "letdown to the many other smaller and unrecognised cultures present in a truly rich and diverse Rhodellian nation”.  Regardless of Murdercubism's official status, countless young devotees will continue to embark on grand pilgrimages just to see their monolith and praise its glorious name wherever they may be. It seems that the Murder Cube, Rhodellia’s unofficial patron deity, is here to stay.
    • Vardin El Al hadn't canceled flights to Aluxia's capital since the civil war had erupted. Four Shai operatives had been assigned to make their way to the territory held by the Free Aluxian Army and to provide their 'services.' The plane had landed at Vardin's modest airport - it didn't see many flights daily. On their plane alone, there were only a handful of people - exactly 10. Some in the airline business would say that operating such flights were unsustainable but the Government mandated the company continue its schedule on an illusion of confidence in the current Imperial throne and to 'be prepared for further activity' should the need be required. The head of the operation was an experienced agent by the name Raphael Bauman, who had shown talent in basic training to be given an opportunity to serve his country in the reconnaissance squad of the elite 1st Golani Division of the Army. Following several successful operations, the nation's intelligence bureau, the Shai, heard of his talents and had him brought off the front lines and to work from the shadows. His instructions were quite explicit: connect with the Free Army by whatever means. It wasn't the first time his superiors had given him no guidance whatsoever. The Aluxian officials glanced at his passport with considerable care. Clearly, there were tensions and they were not as much to do with the war as it was from where he was coming from, let alone his own appearance. Despite this, the Aluxian inspectors had bigger fish to catch than cause an incident with him and so let him on his way. He emerged from the terminal building and witnessed the first hints of concern in Vardin. Soldiers were everywhere. From the building entrance to the gates of the entire airport. The reigning monarch didn't take anything for granted. He may have controlled the capital but fighting a civil war in this day in age was far different than if it had occurred at the turn of the last century, or even further back in time. Due to the war, travelers were light and there was all but one car waiting out front - it was for him and his colleagues. "Your friend Uri sent me to collect you," said the driver. Raphael nodded and nodded to his fellow operatives and all got into the car. Just as they exited the airport, they were halted by soldiers. "Where are you going?" asked the commanding soldier. "Tikva Mission, Embassy Quarter." The squad of soldiers eyed them and returned their gaze to the driver. "These two trucks of men will escort you," the commanding officer said. The driver nodded and turned back to his passengers. "Paranoia over rebel attack," he said, "has them all on edge." Bauman didn't respond and thought to himself particularly because the rebels were hundreds of miles away and wherein no position to assault the capital anytime soon.  The now-convoy of vehicles made their way towards the center of the capital. Driving through the suburban ring and into the center, soldiers were ever-present. "Martial law is in effect," said one loudspeaker they drove past. "Please comply with all regulations." The driver remarked, "it's been like this for nearly two weeks. Won't be changing anytime soon." Soon enough the vehicles reached the barricaded Embassy Quarter where hundreds of Aluxians were arguing with soldiers and law enforcement personnel to get through - all of whom wanted to escape the country and the chaos unfolding. Their escort peeled away and returned to the airport while their car slipped through the gates and approached the Mission. Ambassador Asimov was waiting for them outside. "Brothers and sisters, I am happy to hear that you made it," he announced as the group of four got out. "We have much to talk about it, Bauman," the ambassador paused, "I have a gift for you in the basement, I will have Aram bring it up." The group of five moved to Uri's study to begin their meeting. Idle chit-chat while Aram brought Raphael's 'gift' upstairs. He placed it on the table in front of them, "thank you, you are dismissed." He took his leave. "Now, let's get right to the chance. We do not have long. You might have gotten into Vardin, getting out of it is incredibly difficult," he paused before continuing. "I have some items that may aid your mission including a rough sketch of the Vardin sewers compiled by some...contacts I have within the Imperial Security units here. I recommend you use it to guide yourselves through to the outskirts of the city. I have some burner phones with pre-paid cards for inter-team communications. I have also placed in a small directory of essential numbers. Do not lose it under any circumstances. Eat it if you must, but memorize first." "Along with the standard gear you'd probably need. I've also managed to sneak you a few weapons that I purchased on the 'grey' market. Ammo is also included. Be careful with your supply. I am aware of your brief mission getting in contact with the FAA. It is much too challenging to go straight across the country where the fighting is stewing. Instead, there is another location that may be far easier to liaise with them. Make your way north to Chukba. I hear they are making a push there in the very near future." The ambassador scanned the room. "Any questions?" "What about the 10 million Shekels we're contributing," said one of the four operatives. "I've already taken care of it. Do not worry about it. You have more important things that concerning yourself with the disbursement of dark money." Seeing no other inquiries, he concluded his conversation with the group, "stay here in the embassy this evening, and make your way to the sewer grate in the back of the compound after midnight. You have to be out of the sewers by sunrise." Each operative shook his hand and got up. Raphael was the last to stand up and shake Uri's hand. He was pulled in closer. "You have to hurry and get to Chukba. I haven't heard from Kuzha Yosef Khaimov and Mikel Levitin in five days." Bauman nodded. "We'll find out what's going on." Uri escorted him out to his colleagues. "Feel free to use the third-floor guest rooms to prepare."
    • The Kirvinska counterpart to the Rihannsu and Shffahkian plans of expansion on Aurelia, Blood in the Snow, takes the form of the unfortunate meddling and panache that could come from only one man: a young son of an old Duke's Musketeer, set out to a border province on word of a possible commission. The hot-blooded energy of his youth drives him to actions that any other man would have ignored, and through a series of unfortunate duels, the status of the Cagora valley is suddenly thrown into jeopardy. The once self-sustaining river valley, robbed of its leadership, is driven into the arms of its former overlord- the newly ascendant Kirvina, bolstered by its new status as a member of a powerful League- the Aurelian League. Blood in the Snow plays out in five acts, the first introducing the young man driving its events and the unfortunate mission which took him to Cagora to begin with. It is not an eventline which directly affects most of you out there, but is simply a narrative adventure for your literary pleasure, and should be treated as such: a window into the flair and flamboyance of a culture long gone. Through it one may hear the stories of things lost to the past- duels, noble love, and ultimately the fate of a Duchy. I am open to take any questions about it, the way and timeframe in which it will be completed, and the nature of the political climate surrounding it. Barring any changes, the current completion date for this expansion will be MARCH 1, 2019. The layout of the Cagora river valley is placed below for your convenience. Moderators Involved: @Sunset Sea Islands Players Involved: @Rihan @Shffahkia List to be updated at leisure.
    • @Orioni, I have taken some time to think about the map placement and this is probably the best option as I can justify the Samarran Valley right on the southern border. Plus even if Cashar is 'dormant' no harm in at least having someone share a border with. If this is the ultimate placement, then placement of cities remain except that Harel is at the confluence of the river and the sea, Katzilya is to its right, and Adora further to the right a third of the way to the eastern edge. Ayalon would be placed inland, rather central on the image above. I think adding any other cities to this plot would make it too busy. Let me know if there is anything else you need.
