      Hello new member   02/03/2018

Welcome to Europa. This site is part of the region of Europa in the online game NationStates. The region of Europa is a diverse community of nations, with a wide range of political and ideological values, working together through various institutions and alliances - at least when they're not threatening to go to war with each other. Whether you want to play it safe with a liberal democracy, set up a communist regime, or rule your citizens with an iron fist and the threat of turning them into dog food, Europa is a great region to play in. As one of the oldest regions in the game, everybody who's anybody wants to try their hand at ruling their own country right here in Europa. Just head on over to the Forum and have a read through the sticky threads. If you're curious about how all of this work, we've included some helpful links to get you started. A good place to start is our Hitchhickers Guide to Europa. Roleplayers will be glad to see our honest and fair RP rules. Check out our map versions and discover how to apply. Experiencing problem with this website? Our helpdesk is always open. Have fun! -- The Europans Team

Just wondering if it was possible for me to reach the ocean to the west of my nation? Main reason for it is to have another access point to an ocean that doesn't freeze as the ocean up north b Prymont does

@Ahrana That's certainly possible. Looking at the geography, your southern tip is closest to the Mediargic Sea. In a future expansion, it could be extended to reach that bay.

Your closest neighbour on that southern side is @Girkmand : would you have any objections to this request?

    • A military trade agreement between the nations of Fleur de Lys and Astriedan. "Following a rather small and fast contact with one of our representative in travel in Astriedan, it has come to our intention the will of the United Houses to modernised its aerial component of its military force. Which is why, in agreement of what we understood, I allow myself as DC of Aérospatiale to write you this letter to further know your intentions and in the hope of developing the needs and how we may fill them."

    • Summer has started in Antargis. The land of the eternal ice is being flooded with diffuse light, the ice slowly retreats, penguin chicks hatch and cute little seal pups open their round eyes for the first time. Whales graze on the abundant masses of plankton and krill cumulating in the frigid waters. But this year, something is different about the southernmost continent. There is a building standing between dunes of snow amidst the freezing haze. It is the Simon Station, the ISTC's foothold on the frozen continent.

    • Morheim creates the Treaty for Cultural and Historical Exchange (TCHE), a multi-national organisation designed to promote co-operation in several academic fields as well as opening its citizen's eyes to the cultures of neighbours and potential friends. It is their hope that you will accept my invitation to meet with Queen Julia III and her team at Thale Royal Palace to discuss this concept and reach a mutually acceptable treaty which will kick-start this ambition of a young Archaeology student.

    • Tonight on Ahrana Today (AT) we have a special edition on the Communist Takeover. It is important to know and understand how regimes rise and fall. Tonight we focus on the new Government of Ahrana, the Communist. In order for us to truly understand, we must go back to where it all began, and see why the movement was so successful. Now is the time to show the world why the Communist are here.

    • Military R&D making great progress Earlier today, testing for a 3.35 meter tall mech design began in northern Lithuania. From what first-hand witnesses have told the Times, the mech was able to destroy a car with relative ease, shoot fire, and smash through rubble. Other projects shown off at the testing site included a new type of suit able to make the wearer jump slightly higher than normal, light-activated night vision goggles, and improved military-grade shields. In addition, a large artillery piece with a built in targeting system was demonstrated.  Check back tomorrow for more updates from the Commonwealth Times, your local, and absolutely only, news network.
    • International News DONA PARASS HOSTAGE SITUATION ENDS IN FIREFIGHT- 12 PASSENGERS SLAIN February 14, 2018   -12 Passengers, 2 Navy, 30 Hijackers dead in hostage rescue operation Sakspati Cape, International Waters- Early this morning, members of the Armada Special Operations Command launched a large operation for the rescue of the remaining passengers of the Dona Parass cruise ship which had been hijacked by a large Circle of Death cell just yesterday. The hijackers had immediately claimed their affiliation with the Hellenic Russian, now international, terrorist organisation. Sources in Corregidor Maritime Command (CMC) have claimed that the hijackers had attempted to run the Dona Parass aground on a nearby reef, so that their ground accomplices could proceed to move hostages and plunder from the cruise ship. However, our source also claims that this plan was thwarted by an Armada Redentor class Littoral Combat Ship, the VRI Sant Tomas (LCS-018) which had intercepted the hijacked ship as she bore down on the reef. Officer in charge of the hostage rescue operation, Comandante Gregorio Segovia, of the Armada Special Boat Unit (SBU), reportedly forced the operation underway 4 hours earlier than originally planned, citing the possibility of greater loss of hostage lives due to the "daring interception made by the Sant Tomas". This decision, however, came at a cost. The details are yet to be confirmed by Corregidor, but as of now, we can ascertain that the early launch of the operation had caught support assets like aerial reconnaissance and Republican Marine Corps (RMC), unable to respond in time. In the ensuing chaos, 2 SBU operators were killed by hostile fire and 3 more were seriously injured in what can only be speculated from amateur videography as a gas explosion from amidships--which claimed 9 of the total civilian casualties. As Corregidor has yet to release the complete data on the mission, INBC cannot yet confirm the exact events which have just taken place on the Dona Parass, though NGOs and medical units have released some data able to paint a figure of the results. The hijackers had purportedly numbered just shy of 200 men, 30 of which were killed, another 50 injured, while the rest were able to flee on skiffs used for the initial boarding. 12 Civilians were killed, with another 20 injured by stray fire, shrapnel, or burns from the gas explosion. CMC has also yet to release the status of the 3 wounded Armada personnel. More on this as follows.   MUTUAL EMBASSIES WITH GALLAMBRIA February 21, 2018 In a short Palá conference today, Primo Franso Deitorr included a statement expressing the Republic's intention to expand diplomatic ties with the Kingdom of @Gallambria . According to Primo Deitorr's statement; "Iverican-Gallambrian ties have been strengthened in the wake of the recent tragedies befalling Walmington On Sea. Noting that the Kingdom has not only recognised our openness to cooperation in the recent months, allowing our diplomatic parties a formal embassy, as well as recognising the efforts of our valiant civil servicepersons working to create a safer Walmington On Sea--it is only natural that we likewise provide mutual establishment for the Gallambrian delegations. I am proud to announce that the Republic will be opening the diplomatic district to a Gallambrian Embassy. We are confident that this establishment will only prove to cement our relations for future endeavours and further aid in solidarity against any mutual tribulations that may come." When questioned about the possibility of future joint-projects with the Kingdom, Primo Deitorr suggested that the Republic would be "open to any joint military exercises, or any mutual infrastructure development that His Majesty Albert II or the Gallambrian Parliament, might be likewise inclined to". ---
    • Defence White Paper paints grim strategic picture HMGS Ocean during a day of exercises in Newport Beneath the surface hurly-burly of defence politics about "freedom of navigation patrols" and where build our new submarines, there are greater and more enduring currents of Gallambria's interests in a changing world. The surface impress of Anthony Greenwald was that he is less hawkish than his national security-focused predecessor, that he might well place less of a priority on defence spending.  Questions abounded as to whether he would keep the promise to spend 2 per cent of the nation's wealth on defence by early next decade as Johann Haasbroek had promised. Monday's white paper put those doubts firmly at rest. The fact that Greenwald has wedged into sticking with the 2 percent pledge - to abandon it would have caused a tsunami on his party's right wing - no doubt played a role. But Greenwald's motives make little difference to the rest of the world. In defence, action speak louder than words, especially when the action is the outlay of 195 billion pound in new military hardware acquisition over the next five years. By most assessments then, Monday's Defence White Paper is a clear statement that Gallambria is in the game of Marenesia's rising wealth, influence and military spending. At the strategic heart of the document is the rise of communism within the northern hemisphere. John Prollecks, a professor of security and strategic studies at the Gallambrian National University called the paper nothing less than "the end of the illusion in Bromwich that somewhow Communism, is not a threat to our democratic way of life." The language in the paper, Prollecks wrote in a blog post for the Gallambrian Strategic Policy Institute, made it "unmistakably clear that Bromwich's assessment about the trajectory of Communism's rise in influence has become more pessimistic." The sharpness of the paper's language is captured by a section that states "while it is natural for newly powerful countries to seek greater influence" some have "sought to challenge the natural order of our ultimate aim for world peace, by challenging the rules that govern actions in the global commons in unhelpful ways, leading to uncertainty and tension".
    • The Commonwealth Times under stricter ownership Following a few recent stories published by the Commonwealth Times that showed our glorious government as less-then-perfect, the King has taken full ownership of the company, and a new set of staff has been put in place. All previous workers of the Times will be provided with full financial aid and free housing. We promise. In addition to this, all other regional newspapers of the Commonwealth have been merged with the Commonwealth Times to make sure that no false news is being printed. At all. Check back tomorrow for more updates from the Commonwealth Times, your local, and absolutely only, news network.

Satellite image of our RP world (July 11th, 2017)
      1. Introduction
This is an explanation of v4 of our regional map. It is a continuation of v3, which was expanded into a full globe in 2017. We started with the original landmass of v3, established relative sizes of our world, and added more continents to the remaining area. This project became v4.
Map of Europa v4 (2017-present) Map of Europa v3 (2006-2017) Map of Europa v2 (2004-2006) Map of Europa v1 (2004) 2. Qualifying for the map
There are some minimal rules you need to adhere to before applying for a place our map. These rules are fairly straightforward.
Be in Europa. You must have a nation in our region. Be on this forum. Register an account and join the community. Be active in RP. This is no place for lurkers. Create a factbook here and maintain a news agency there with at least 3 articles. Be not a dick. Ignoring these qualifications will sadly see your application ignored as well. Sorry about that.
      3. Applying for the map
While it was possible in previous versions to simply lay claim to any open piece of land, we decided to exchange this for negotiated placement that makes more sense. We are now working with culture zones, where you will be somewhat related to your neighbouring nations. This will prevent situations where, for example, you have a France-like nation next to a Japan-like nation.
What information should I send along with my request? Your answer to these questions will help to determine the position of your nation.
Culture. Is your culture based on RL Europa, Africa, Asia, Arabia, islander, or other? Climate. Is your nation warm or cold? Is the weather wet or dry? Location. Is your nation on an island or coastal or inland or landlocked? History. Is your nation younger or older than 300 years? Copy this form into a new topic and fill out your request.
Nation in Europa: Flag: Capital: Factbook link: Newsroom link: Culture: Climate: Location History: You will receive 2-3 options of where your nation can be located. These options depend on your answers to the above questions and similar nations already on the map. Please understand that this is an open negotiation.
      4. Resizing your nation
Growing your nation has to be earned. More RP activity means you can end up with a bigger nation. We don't give away land to players who are inactive. If you want to apply for more land you can make a case for it in this topic. If the RP community and cartographer agrees, then your request can be negotiated and approved.
Your closest active neighbour must agree. The cartographer must agree. The RP community must agree (simple yes/no poll). Shrinking a nation happens when it ceases to exist. Usually, you are granted some weeks to return. After a long absence, your nation will be reduced to the area around your capital. Your nation will be considered to be in crisis. An exception can be granted for nations with a considerable contribution to RP.
As tempting as it is to expand when your nation hits both the post and population parameters to do so, I must remind everyone that any and every expansion must be properly RP'ed for. This doesn't mean a one-post mention in your news thread, but a proper thread which goes through your acquisition of that land. Don't be afraid to be controversial or reluctant to stir up trouble ? in fact, this is often the best way, as it means that the much more fun can be had. Maybe you're taking over a plot that was originally another player-nation? you could RP the fact that that nation had recently fragmented and you're going in to "pacify" it. Or perhaps the plot you've got your sights set on has always been vacant. In this instance, there could be a minor regime with an opposite political ideology to your nation's, sponsoring terrorism within your borders. Time to invade and scrub out those commies/fascists-supporting terrorists! Just because your nation is expanding, it doesn't mean that every nation will automatically agree. In fact, the majority of wars in this region, whether minor or major, have originally been started over nations expanding. This is perfectly valid and, to a point, does reflect real-world tendencies, as some nations resent others moving into their spheres of influence. On a final note, I must add that when your nation does get big enough to expand into another plot, it doesn't mean you have to. If and when you do wish to take over another bit of land, be prepared to have a proper reason and story thought through to explain this expansion, as well as the fact that other nations may not accept it. Examples of Previous Expansion RPs:
Collapse of Abyssioan Government. Peacekeepers are sent in to secure a previous player?s nation. Operation: Hammerfall. One nation reacts to terrorists attacking from an adjacent plot, and reacts by invading it. Other nations did't agree and sent military forces. Plot 21 Incident. A nation of one alliance expands into the sphere of influence of another. Nearly went nuclear!

Want to see our planet as a globe? Want to measure accurate distances without complicated mathematics? Want to crash your computer with heavy software? You are in luck! Because now you can, by following this tutorial. You will learn how to take our flat world map and turn it into a functional layer with Google Earth Pro. In this tutorial, I'll take you through each step of this process. Let me know in the comments if you are experiencing any issues.

      1. Download Google Earth Pro
At the time of this writing, you can download this free software package from https://www.google.com/earth/desktop/ . There are versions available for PC, Mac, or Linux. Follow the instructions on the aforementioned website, install the software, and open the program. If things go wrong with the installation, find your answer in Google. In case this installation fail to work, I cannot provide support on how to debug your computer. Sorry about that.

      2. Add image overlay
The interface may look somewhat different for each operating system (PC, Mac, or Linux). But the basic operation is the same. Menu bar > Add > Image Overlay.

      3. Image overlay settings
Step three, and we're almost finished already. You are doing great there!
Name. Give your custom overlay a name. You can call it "map of Europa" or "map of nationstates" or "home sweet home". This is something you can always change later. The next two steps are much more important. Link. You can either (a) link to an online file as shown in the screenshot, or (b) browser to a local file on your computer. Keep in mind: if you choose (b) to work with a local file, and then move this file, your image overlay won't work anymore. But you can easily fix this by linking to the new file location. Location. This is in the tabs (see screenshot). With these settings, we can stretch the image to fit onto a complete globe. You want to stretch the image all the way, in all directions. Meaning: 90°N, 180°E, 90°S, and 180°W. In the screenshot this is much longer, including minutes are seconds. But if you just add 90°N, and hit enter/return, then the program will add the right data anyway. Easy! You can safely ignore all the other settings and options. Just enter the settings as explained above, and you should get this to work. Click "Ok" when you are done.

      4. Done
Enjoy playing with your new ball.

      5. "Wait I messed up!"
No worries there, buddy. Just right-click on your custom map overlay, go to "Get info" and change your settings. If that still doesn't work, go back to step #2 and try again.
