A City by the Sea

 

On the northern coast of the Sevrun Sea, a small port city thrived on trade and the fertile soil almost three millenia ago. The city's population was represented in a Senate, which created a code of laws that regulated property rights and settled disuputes between citizens. The city was controlled by the Council of Elders, who appointed three magistrates, who were responsible for the conduct of war, religion, and law.

 

The magistrates encouraged trade, reformed the coinage, and invited foreign businessmen to the city. Under their leadership they city's wealth increased seven-fold, and they instituted a taxation, and used the taxes to build schools, markets, roads, walls, churches and canals. Men lived as equals. All men were free, not one slave was bought in this city, known as Stilis.

 

The luxurious, worry-free life of Stilis ground to a halt when a massive slaving ship came into port. Children and adults ran out to greet the new-comers, whose complexion was unlike that of any other trader's they had ever seen before. As they came close with gifts and food the malicious sailors grabbed the children and women and dragged them back to their ship. The guards rushed to rescue the victims from their fate, but were thrown back and the ship left port. As it began to sail away, the dark captain of the black vessel promised that they would return once these captives had all been consumed...
