The Ide Jiman Empire

Name:

The Ide Jiman Empire

Short Form:

Ide Jima

History:

The origins of Ide Jiman culture can be traced to pre-1000 BCE. Whilst by no means isolated, there exists a strictly isolationist attitude within the Ide Jiman national psyche. Ide Jiman culture originated from a multitude of city states, based around the Darhan river in the Ide Jiman hinterland. Through a process of conquest and aggressive diplomacy spanning over 400 years, a united kingdom emerged by 300 CE. Thereafter, the imperial government gradually exercised absolute control over the lands within the current borders of the Ide Jiman Empire. Following an attempted  With the accession of various emperors, openheartedness towards the outside world fluctuated down the centuries. Ethnic groups inhabiting the fringes of the current Ide Jiman Empire were gradually subsumed within the growing nation-state.

During an era of increasing international trade, anti-imperial sentiment among the citizens of Ide Jima boiled over, resulting in one of the longest conflicts in Europan history. Following a bloody power struggle, communist revolutionaries assumed control of the entirety of the former Ide Jiman Empire. Commencing in the late 1980’s, economic stagnation, combined with an aggression amongst the general populace towards heavy handed government control over everyday life resulted in a second civil war. The outcome resulted in the heir apparent, Artakai I, returning from exile to assume control of the provisional government.

Government Summary:

Officially, from 1954 to 1992, Ide Jima was governed by a hardline communist government. Following economic breakdown and widespread famine large portions of the military, manned primarily by unwilling, disillusioned and impoverished conscripts, revolted against the communist leadership. The military revolt led to a short civil war, which within weeks led to the collapse of the Ide Jiman communist government. The after-effects of the conflict reverberate to the present day; the Government remains fiercely anti-communist, and the government exploits strong nationalist sentiment as a matter of course.

The Ide Jiman aristocracy consist of a number of Barons, many of whom are wider members of the Imperial Family, or individuals elevated due to services to the empire. In the latter example, it is not uncommon for these appointments to be granted posthumously to military figures, as a means of honoring and supporting their family members.

In the aftermath of the restoration, absolute power is exercised by the current head of state, Emperor Artakai I. The monarchy’s grasp on power is cemented by a strong relationship with the military. Imperial laws are rubber-stamped by a military council, the Central Directorate, consisting of high-ranking officers from the four military districts of the empire.

In recent years, the Government’s emphasis on nationalist policies has led to an increase in secessionist tendencies among areas of the empire. The southern of the nation, geographically isolated from the North by a large expanse of desert, has developed into a potential flashpoint.

Nation Summary:

Through the nature of the existing government and traditional cultural boundaries, the nation remains heavily regionalized. Ide Jima is dominated by powers based in the Northern and Central regions.

The north of the Country is traditionally more well developed. The temperate climate combined with strong infrastructure make this area the economic powerhouse of the nation. Rural areas are dominated by agricultural output, whilst the conurbations of Serekan and Xian form the major industrial centers of the nation. The national capital of Serekan, the largest city in Ide Jima, is generally considered to be a region in its own right.

The central regions of the nation consist largely of barren mountain wilderness, as well as the Darhan River basin in the West, which originally formed the cradle of the Ide Jiman nation. The mountainous regions of the nation are largely unpopulated, punctuated only by mining towns and military bases. The Darhan area in the far west consists of a small area of fertile land, centered around the city of Darhan itself, the regional capital, and an ancient city closely aligned to the power bases in the northern part of the nation.

The Southern part of the nation can be broadly delineated into two areas. The area south of the central ranges is occupied largely by a vast desert. Largely unoccupied save for a few pockets of civilization clustered around oases, and a handful of military testing ranges, the desert region remains one of the most sparsely inhabited on eurth. A small strip of fertile land along the southern coast is heavily populated. Several large port cities such as Dalshir and Kherbayan occupy the southern coast, which remains largely isolated from the Northern part of the Country, save for a handful of highways and railways connecting the port cities to the wealthier north. Crucially, the southern part of the nation has traditionally been more outward looking. This, combined with disgruntlement towards the Northern government (accused by many of usurping trade wealth from the southern ports) have led to an upsurge in anti-Serekan sentiment in recent years. Large parts of the southern coast are currently under martial law.

The far southwest is generally regarded separately, despite being geographically similar to the remainder of the South. The area is typically referred to by the name of the regional capital, Khamseen, and is centered around the eastern banks of the Darhan river delta. The fertile regions of the river itself are concerned primarily with agriculture, with a lesser emphasis on trade compared to other Southern cities, due to the relative distance of the city from international shipping lanes. Whilst the region is culturally, ethnically and ideologically homogenous with the power bases in the north of the Country, relatively high poverty in the region has exacted a heavy toll on pro-government sentiment in the area. Concerns relating to the restive nature of the region, combined with traditionally strong ties with Serekan have however resulted in the region being granted a unique honor within the military government. Aside from Serekan, Khamseen is the only city to be independently represented within the governing military council.

Economic Summary:

The economic output of the Ide Jiman empire consists largely of raw materials, based primarily on mining, forestry and agricultural output. Civil war and unrest have hampered economic development throughout much of the past 30-40 years, as a result of which much of the civilian population is occupied in unskilled roles related to resource extraction.

In the wake of the collapse of the communist government in the early 1990’s significant advances occurred in economic development, particularly within the northern region of the nation. Previously centered on exploitation of primary resources, the economy has seen an upsurge in the growth of large private technological, engineering and other industrial corporations.

Economic advances since the collapse of the communist government have resulted in increase in the overall standard of living in Ide Jima.

Religion:

Traditional Ide Jiman religion evolved from a range of animistic beliefs. By 250BCE, a syncretic system of belief of Than’Chai had emerged, placing emphasis on ancestor and nature worship. Philosophical developments throughout the following centuries resulted in an increasing emphasis being placed on self-betterment, with Ide Jiman religion closely resembling Tibetan Buddhism by 1900. Religion in Ide Jima was effectively wiped out by the communist government. Since the collapse of the regime, the Imperial Government has taken great efforts to promote Than’Chai. Consequently, the faith is closely linked with the Imperial Government, and honoring the state is considered by many to be part of an individual’s religious duty. Officially, Ide Jima is religiously homogenous, and outside religions are banned.

Defense:

The Government is run by the military, as a result of which defense remains the top priority for government expenditure. Despite the downfall experienced by the previous governing regime, conscription is still largely applied, albeit with some caveats for the more restive regions in the southern part of the nation. The military government is characterized by the long-running squabbles between the Army and Navy, which each vie for favor with Emperor. The Air Force has traditionally occupied a middle-ground in such disputes and continues to benefit as such, being the most prestigious of the main service branches. Each of the military branches is subdivided into regional command areas, governed by officials reporting directly to the Emperor as part of the military council. The current inventory of the Ide Jiman Military can be broken down as follows:

Air Force:

Consisting of 816,000 personnel, the IJAF is broken down primarily into regional theatres, each consisting of several aerial divisions comprised of around 17,000 personnel, and fielding around 100-120 aircraft each. Each division is subdivided into several smaller squadrons, typically of 25-30 aircraft each. Recent years have seen a decrease in the number of aircraft fielded by the IJAF, with a greater emphasis being placed on employing smaller numbers of modern aircraft types. The following division types are currently employed by the Air Force:

Army:

The Ide Jiman army represents the largest of the military branches, containing 3,450,000 personnel. As with all branches of the military, the overall command structure is broken into regional commands, termed army fronts. The army includes 120 divisions, each containing approximately 20,000 personnel. Despite overall size, the army has struggled to effectively modernize, and consequently remains geared primarily towards territorial defense. Recent years have seen an effort to introduce a greater capacity for force projection in the military, with emphasis being placed on upgrades to airborne, mechanized and armored divisions.

Navy:

Containing approximately 2,100,00 personnel, the navy represents the second largest branch of the military in terms of manpower. The recent history of the navy has been characterized by bitter rivalries with other branches of the military, particularly the army. The bulk of the navy is organized into three fleet commands, Northern, Southern and Central, whilst a fourth, the Naval Defense Command, operates in the role of a Coast Guard operating smaller corvette and patrol vessels in riverine and littoral waters across the nation. The three main fleets have benefitted from recent military budgets, and operate a number of fleet carriers. The ideological emphasis of the navy rests on air power, as a result of which a number of shore based attack squadrons are operated by the navy, independently of the air force.

Marine Corps:

The IJMC consists of three divisions, with a total manpower of 120,000. Each division is assigned to the northern, southern and central fleets. Along with the air force, the IJMC represents one of the most modernized elements of the military

Imperial Guard:

The Imperial Guard is divided into two divisional sized formations of around 17,000 soldiers each. The role of the Guard is twofold, the first division is assigned for protection of the imperial family, and acts as a military intelligence/police force to promote this aim. The second division is employed as an special forces formation, with elements being attached to army formations.

Strategic Forces:

The strategic forces represent a single divisional sized formation, responsible for the deployment of short to medium range ballistic missiles from mobile launchers.

Thanks guys! I owe most of this to the good old CIA world factbook - always helps if you ever find yourself wanting to write a factbook for your nation.

These ships also serve as 'fleet wreckers', holding the ability to launch both devastating air and missile assault simultaneously. For operations closer to home and at shorter notice, Type 21 carriers project smaller firepower, and are tailored for special operations, defense and emergencies. The final type is the Type 24, the sole bomber carrier of the Ide Jiman navy. Fielding F-111 from it's massive twin hull based runway, this carrier moves in conjunction with regular CVNs to provide devastating air assault for landing operations.

Battleships: 7

Keyshan Class:3 (Thunder, Lightning, Blizzard)

Atlas Class:4 (Atlas, Promethius, Epimethius, Menoetius)

Some view battleships as being obsolete when it comes to modern naval strategy. The high command of the Ide Jiman navy has made sure that the role of the battleship remains central. The two classes have both differing roles. The Keyshan class of ship are used for coastal bombardment - in the event of a naval assault the massive 16in guns wielded by the ships are able to churn out much more firepower than the largest cruisers - at either naval or land targets. Keyshan ships are reliant upon destroyers and frigates for defense from the air and against submarines though, so normally only operate as part of a sizeable battlegroup. More independent are the 4 Atlas class, fast moving, lightly armoured assault ships used for attacking enemy commerce vessels. One of the most expensive classes of ship ever produced, the four vessels incorporate mainly missile armamend, and also numerous stealth features. These ships operate freely of fleets, carrying ample anti air defense as well as powerful radar in amongst their llarge missile arsenals. Every battleship carries at least 100 marines.

Cruisers: 39

Weizhau Class CG:15

Shenai Class CGN:8

Larzu Class CGH:10

Shirane I/II Class CGN:6 (I Class 4, II Class 2)

The standard guided missile cruiser of the navy is the Weizhau class, a type designed to protect larger vessels by providing high levels of anti submarine weaponry and detection. As well as this the ships carry long range missiles designed for surgical strikes against inland enemy targets. Almost identical to the Weizhau class are the Shenai vessels, however using nuclear propulsion. Similarly the nuclear powered Shirane I Class provide fleet defense, as well as being able to form part of the nuclear deterrent in times of emergency. Shirane Class II can be technically classed as Battlecruisers, capable of engaging enemy shipping and acting independently as commerce raiders. Shirane II Class are often found probing the Eastern approaches to the Byzantine sea. Larzu cruisers provide additional helicopter support to fleets and landing operations, as well as a basic level of defense.

My flag

(See avatar because I can't find it right now)

Red is a colour that has been associated with Ide Jima since early history, relating to the royal colour of the ancient imperial house of Jimatai. The 'sun' emblem is another ancient symbol, and the 12 points represent the number of Ide Jiman states immediately following the fall of communism.

The crescent moon, which in other flags may symbolise islam, symbolises the 'years of darkness' from 1956 - 2005. The sun rising before the moon symbolises a return to prosperity at the hands of democracy.

The Temple of Shi-Kan Riyu

Place Constructed: The northwestern Taishan ranges, near the border.

Existed: It is believed to have been built around 460 BC, and most of the structure remains standing until today.

History:

1) The temple was built originally as a fortress against the marauding Ide Jiman natives, who had been forced from the region of Darhan by the encroaching Jimantai people.

2) By 200 AD, the region was largely deserted as a result of deforestation, and the fort fell into disrepair.

3) For 1100 years the fort stood as a hideout for thieves, until 1300 AD, when Christians from the west of Ide Jima took the fort over as a place of refuge, establishing it as a Monastery or 'temple' as they are known in some parts of the Ide Jiman church.

4) Until 1950, the building served it's purpose, until the communists abolished religion and destroyed part of the temple.

5) Reinstated as a Heritage site in 2003, now preserved.

Description:

This building symbolises the northern state of Darhan, and provides researchers with an insight into one of the most unknown patches of Ide Jiman history.

OOC: Nice work

You're military seems impressive.. i dont want to tangle with you ohmy.gif

Damn, 18.4 million military personnel in the Army alone! That's by the 5% standards I guess, so you probably have a huge population. Your military is kick ass and big. Mine is kick ass and small. I have 8,700,000 total personnel. Now we all know that no military in RL has 18.4 million, or even 8 million like mine. So what do you think your more RL number would be just to get a better idea, like china? Mine would probably be around 300,000-350,000.

The vast majority of that number are the support/ logistics folks who are required to project a well equipped force of around two million. The ratio I used is around 7 support troops to every soldier in the front line. In RL, my military would be closest to China or India in terms of size.

This is deliberately toned down - if I was using the 5% rule I'd have 228 Million personnel in my armed forces wink.gif

    • Howdy, folks. Obviously, war's been declared. We'll be outlining what this means for the RP below. Since last we made progress on this RP as a concept, there's been some changes to it. Most notably:   1. The absence of Derthalen as a player character 2. The placing of Rhodellia 3. The war goals of the coalition Firstly, I speak for the group when I say that, in the absence of Derthalen, we'd like to ask @Iverica, if willing, to take on the role of OPFOR in ROTW. Secondly, I also speak for all members of the coalition when I ask that the military participation of the Kingdom of @Rhodellia be heavily limited. Third, and lastly, we've developed a new plan thusly:   1. Securing air and naval superiority in the Dolch and over Derthalen's coastline 2. Mounting an amphibious landing on the southern shores of Derthalen 3. Overland, attack towards Heinrichstadt and capture the capital with all speed. 4. Respond to developing counterattacks as needed (also applies to previous 4) 5. Obtain unconditional surrender, or nearest equivalent 6. Divide and occupy the country 7. Formally declare the Alliance for Mutual Security 8. (Long term) Establish a constitutional republic in Derthalen under AFMS/UEL supervision.   We're happy to hear feedback on this plan from the RP Moderators and adjust it as needed. Thanks, y'all.
    • Brennan sulked up to the door of his flat, tired after his long day at work. It had been a miserable day but at least he knew he could sit with his family and relax. He opened the door and instead of seeing his wife and children milling about this house as usual he all of them glued to the television. His wife a, look of concern on her face quickly waved her husband over gesturing towards the screen. "Sit quickly, the King, he's says he's got a big announcement. I dunno what it could be right now." Just as Brennan sat on his couch the SBC banner flared onto the television declaring breaking news cutting straight to King Aidan, standing solemnly at a podium in front of the Royal Palace. "Today is a day that none of us should celebrate, but instead understand as a nation as our duty. For decades, the nation of Derthalen has not only threatened our borders but has threatened the freedom, lives, and security of the countless millions of people who pass through the Dolch Sea every year. Weeks ago, a cruise liner carrying almost a thousand souls was setting sail for Seylos, full of people who expected nothing more than a good holiday. Instead, in the midst of a piracy crisis, Derthalen seized the ship and the people it carried in the name of slavery. On board were not only hundred of people from the Duchy of Limonaia, but almost a hundred souls from Seylos. That such horrors could be inflicted on others, and especially our own citizens is beyond reproach. Through these past weeks, the Royal Government has been in contact with out counterparts in Limonaia and have reached out to our steadfast allies in Fulgistan to begin an action to end such a despotic threat to our way of life. During this time the people of Sayf, also invested in the safety and security of the Dolch Sea have reached out to defend those who would make such a journey. Enough is enough. I have convened with my own personal counsel, and have sought the support of the House of Governors in this decision. With overwhelming support, this Government has decided without hesitation to declare formal war against Derthalen, and those that would support her in her crimes. As of now forces from our allied nations have already begun arriving on our island, and the Royal Navy has begun to conduct a series of security operations around Seylos to ensure that our great nation will be safe from harm. The time for diplomacy has come to an end, and it is with this that we will test our force of arms against those who wish so many harm. I have no doubt that our military with the help and frienship of other such like minded states will bring victory against our enemies. Against the world's enemies. Godspeed to us all." Brennan sat back in his couch staring at the screen, mouth slightly ajar in disbelief but he could help but utter, "Well f*ck."
    • The Arab Republic of Sayf declares that a State of War now exists between the Arab Republic of Sayf and the Confederated Empire of Derthalen.     The Arab Republic of Sayf is acting in defense of it's international interests, as well as in defense for the acts of war perpetrated against its allies the Grand Duchy of Limonaia, the Kingdom of Seylos and the Worker's Republic of Fulgistan. The Parliament of the Arab Republic of Sayf has approved and will be acting on it's declaration of war on the Confederated Empire of Derthalen.
    • THE PEOPLE’S GREAT KHURAL OF THE WORKER’S REPUBLIC OF FULGISTAN   Bogd Gioro, 25th of March, 2019   RESOLUTION Declaring That a State of War Exists Between the Government of Derthalen and the Government and People of Fulgistan and Making Provisions to Prosecute the Same   Whereas The Government of Derthalen has perpetrated acts of war against the people of the free world, and committed crimes against all humanity for many decades uninterrupted: Therefore be it resolved by the People’s Great Khural of the Worker’s Republic of Fulgistan that the state of war between the Empire of Derthalen and the Worker’s Republic of Fulgistan is hereby formally declared; and that the Central Committee is hereby authorized and directed to employ the entire naval and military forces of the Worker’s Republic and the resources of the government to carry on war against the government of Derthalen; and, to bring the conflict to a successful termination, all of the resources of the country are hereby pledged by the People’s Great Khural of Fulgistan. • For the past few weeks, a large collection of unremarkable fields to the west of Kirkwall had been the subject of an enormous amount activity. Of course it wasn't until recently that the real construction and movement of material had begun. The Seylosian military had began hastily setting up large amounts of tents, fashioning supply depots as well as clearing and flattening areas for air strips. The local population of Kirkwall had been excited about this development, though many wondered why there was such a sudden rush of construction when they had barely heard of such of move in the past. For awhile the Royal military had been in negotiations to purchase those tracks of lands outside the city, but suddenly to the seller's glee, they were willing to pay the price already on the table. As for the rest of Kiirkwall, they only saw it as a good thing. Some small military base near the city only meant some good business, and most of the time Seylosian soldiers never caused any issues, at least not more than any normal person. What the people of Kirkwall didn't know was this base was going to become center stage in a conflict long brewing. Brigadier Adrian Hudson had just arrived, dropped off by helicopter that had come from Dunblane on the mainland. He had spent twenty years in the Royal Army Logistics Corp and he knew this was his biggest challenge yet. The orders were somewhat vague, but he did know one thing: tens of thousands of new people would be coming to the island along with all their supplies and equipment and it was up to him to make sens of this chaos. Behind him, the colonel waved at the helicopter, with it taking flight again to grab more people and supplies from Dunblane. He was greeted by a middle aged soldier who saluted immediately upon getting close to the Brigadier, "Warrant Officer Fitzroy sir, the base is ready for your command." Hudson stiffly saluted back and motioned towards Fitzroy to follow him, "Brief me as we go, we haven't a lot of time to get this place in shape." Fitzroy nodded taking his place next to the Brigadier, keeping up with his fast pace as they wound their way through tents and soldiers hurriedly moving about. "We've outlined the main area of the base sir, with three similar base sites within a few miles of this location. The government has arranged for several civilian contractors in Kirkwall to assist in constructing more permanent buildings, Major Perce has been in charge of civilian relations in regards to construction efforts. The Corps of Engineers has focused most of its efforts in creating suitable landing fields for various aircraft. At the moment at least we can carry a wing or two of Harriers. We've managed to setup a small amount of prefab buildings towards the center of camp which is where most of the logistics command staff are located at the moment. We have several dozen barracks structures under construction right now, though at the moment tents are all we have." Hudson nodded, it was a hell of a project. No doubt expensive as well, but he had been doing this sort of work his entire Army career and he very well intended have this place running smoothly as soon as possible, though he was sure there wouldn't be many happy people. "Also sir there are several officers who want a meeting with you to discuss logistics. Admiral Forrest wants to have someone be a liaison with the Kirkwall city council in order to use their port infrastructure. Lieutenant General Harley also wants a meeting to discuss division supply-" "Yes I understand, just take me to the center of the base Mr. Fitzroy. We can get these details more sorted in some sort of privacy."
